Any honest display of traditional masculinity, especially as close relationships between men, is perceived by women as a threat to their interests, and is a source of envy.

It's a threat, because it revolves around the interests and needs of men rather than women, and doesn't involve them or their interests. From a woman's perspective, something that doesn't revolve around her interests and needs is by definition not serving her interests and needs, and so cannot be good.

It's a source of envy because women by their nature cannot share that dedication and loyalty with other women (or with men for that matter). No matter how much they might want such relationships, there are always mental reservations getting in the way - hypergamy, status-striving, etc.

And so, instead of accepting that men are different from women like their ancestors did, modern women and their similarly excluded-feeling mangina courtiers use shaming tactics to penalize men for having what they cannot share. They portray or reframe any relationships not focused on female interests as an expression of behaviors or traits such men despise in other men so as to get men to reject them - in this case it's reinterpreting brotherhood as down-low, but it also happens with familiar taunts like "oh, so you're afraid of women in [x]?" or questioning a man's morality, character, or mental integrity for doing anything in which women are not interested or not the focus.

They were battle buddies, you can't find a bond like that anywhere else, besides war.

That's it, that's all.

I saw the movie - online - not paying for that shit.

The guy saved Miss Rebel in the end (well for the most part).

Miss rebel herself was kinda boring - daddy issues of course.

The space battles were pretty cool - Vader had hardly any screen time.


This Star Wars left me saying - "meh"

Saw it tonight, enjoyed it. Certainly the best Star Wara movie since Return of the Jedi.

I want to talk about the way the film kept taking me out of the experience. I know that Peter Cushing, the actor who portrayed Grand Moff Tarkin in A New Hope died 20 some years ago. The same way I know Carrie Fisher (RIP) isn't 20 anymore. As good as Digital Peter Cushing was, it still knocked on the fourth wall every time Tarkin was on screen.

One other subtle moment that dislodged my mind from the movie was during the space battle at the end. Go back and watch the battle of Yavin in A New Hope. Then watch this again. Notice that Red Leader and Gold Leader are the exact same frames lifted from the 40 year old film. Even some of Gold Leader's dialogue is lifter from A New Hope "Red Leader, this is Gold Leader. We're starting our attack." As someone who has every line of the original trilogy burned into my memory from watching it so much as a kid, it was a bit off putting.

But having seen this, and knowing JJ Abrams isn't involved with the next movies give me some hope for improvement.

If you wanted to blow up New York and I told you "just pop open the manhole cover and drop in a grenade" I'm pretty certain you'd want some idea of which one I was talking about.

Did the guy build the weakness in on purpose? Or was it just a mistake?

I mean, if he accidentally forgot to include a grate on the plans, he probably had no idea there was a problem. Maybe he did include a grate in the plans, but the "Exhaust Port Grate #7102" object got lost when AutoCAD updated to a new version. So the construction crews didn't know to put one in to begin with.

That's probably why all the handrails were missing from the huge open shafts in the Death Star too.

In the film when Jyn tells the other about the exhaust port, the others didn't believe her. No one else saw her dad's hologram message and the message was subsequently destroyed so she couldn't replay it. They thought that was something she made up to prevent Cassian from assassinating of her father. It doesn't matter if only she knew, she wasn't going attacking the Death Star; it was necessary to provide proof of the exhaust port to the Rebel Fleet.

So stealing the plans was necessary to find out if the exhaust port was a real flaw or if there was a another way the Rebels could destroy/inflitrate the Death Star.

I think it was some kind of flashbang or concussion grenade, not a fragmentation device. So IIRC he stuffed it in the guy's vest, which would've contained the energy and done damage to the guy's body. Would it kill? Depends on what kind of device it is I guess. Since if you hold even a relatively small lit firecracker in a fist you're asking to lose fingers, I can buy that whatever kind of pressure that grenade made could've really fucked the guy up.

I will say you would have a hell of a time stuffing a grenade into any properly adjusted armor vest because they're a lot more comfortable when they're fairly snug. Otherwise the weight rests on your shoulders and the vest flops around and shit. It's really annoying and kills your back and neck muscles. But, movie. Sure, why not. Maybe the guy was a noob and didn't know how to wear his armor properly.

The movie was pretty entertaining and most of the action scenes were way better than Hollywood usually produces. But, I saw the twist coming and I thought it was stupid. I wish they hadn't gone that route.

In the rough cut of Star Wars: A New Hope several runs were attempted on the exhaust port; Luke, on his first run, used the computer and failed like everybody else. This was to emphasize that the Deathstar's 'weakness' was no more significant than Smaug's weakness in missing a single gem - and when he hero managed to penetrate it, it was just short of a miracle.

So if you want to do this movie's work for it, you could argue that the exhaust port not only needed to be defined, but that you needed some very precise settings on the Proton Torpedo.

I think it was flashbang. Why shouldn't it kill you? It is basically a "firecracker" and if you would press it to the chest you would get at least severe burns.

This is out on Netflix. Finally saw it. Loved the part where Little Darth got into a huge fight with rebel scum at the end. Battles were detailed and entertaining in general. A huge step up from the prequels and TFA.

It was implied, at least to me, that Galen simply did not know about the exhaust port. This seems reasonable to me given that he was a scientist and engineer rather than a military tactician. He may simply not have known enough about the Rebel's military capabilities to design something so specific.

Ultimately it's a backstory that has to stay consistent with the lines from ANH about analyzing the plans for a weakness. It could have been forced a lot more clumsily than it was (like most of the three prequels were).

Okay just watched this on Netflix last night. I liked it better than the shitfest that was TFA but the pacing was off and the characters were some of the shittiest I've seen in any Star Wars film. So flat, dull, boring, and uncharismatic. Plus the middle of the film was a snooze fest.

That being said, since I hated TFA with a passion I enjoyed this film a bit more than I should have and the third act was pretty damn good. Planetary suicide mission was a nice touch. I knew the rebel team would die at the end but I didn't know such a large force would actually go on the mission to die and get slaughtered. Watching the two main characters embracing in a nuclear holocaust type scene was pretty damn cool.

Movie coulda been a lot better with more characterization though. The Captain Cassian guy seemed super cool and morally gray during the first scene when his commander runs outside and says "Forget everything inside. Kill Gaelen Urso as soon as you lay eyes on him" and he salutes. I was like oh shit this is real. But after that he never said or did much to go anywhere.

Also wtf was the point of Forrest Whittaker's character? Why did he just let himself die instead of trying to escape with everyone else? He was a rebellion figurehead and when the planet got hit he's just like "oh well fuck it guys just go". WTF? If he truly cared about Jynn and the rebellion why didn't he try and fight with them?

The movie's saving grace is the last 40 minutes. It's one of the few Star Wars films to feel like a REAL war because we were in the POV of normal characters and not Jedi. Stakes were fucking real in this film and it did that well. If the middle of the film was different it woulda been great.

Ok I'll chime in here. Galen clearly knew about the exhaust port... The whole plot was that Galen BUILT the weakness into the weapon. It's a backdoor basically a point in the ship to where a "systemic failure" or chain reaction would take place and blow everything up. I don't see how that was implied that he didn't know in the list. It's a basic plot element that it was in fact deliberately built into it.

And yeah at first I thought why doesn't this dumbass just explain the weakness in the hologram but one of you guys mentioned it'd be like going to NYC and saying "the weakness is in the manhole".

I enjoyed most of the film. Last 40 minutes had me hooked. Managed not to piss me off like TFA did.
