Many years ago, I had people go through my room and had a laptop stolen.

I did put a backup drive under a couch cushion that was not taken.

My opinion is that it doesn't matter what your laptop looks like. Someone will take a laptop.

It doesn't matter what your bag looks like. Someone will take that. And if you have a laptop bag and no laptop around you are asking for trouble.

If they are brazen enough to enter your room with the intent of steal something then they are going to take anything they can. That means any electronics they find. I don't care if you put ugly tape on it or whatever. That's why your best defense is to hide it.

As crazy as it might sound I'd hide it before I put it in a safe. Under some drugs people become very compliant, believe it or not.

Your best advice is to hide it before you go out. I'd hide it first and if you can add a laptop lock if convenient.

I would never leave my laptop out before going out. Or any accessories that look like I have a laptop.

Unless you absolutely need it for work I recommend going with a large screen smart phone and a Bluetooth keyboard. I use a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and $30 Logitech K380 keyboard. It meets all my needs for traveling and also I can quickly draft emails and edit basic documents. Combine this with Lemon SSH and I can do most of my work admin remotely and secure. If I lose the keyboard then it's no big deal. Much less likely to lose the phone and even if I did it's encrypted. Most importantly this setup is lightweight.

If someone is going to that level to steal your shit it doesn't really matter, at that point you're on the good travel insurance and regular backups train as the only solution. That's a incredibly extreme outcome though, the kind you just can't do anything about.

All those actions are good actions for people in normal situations, ie. the only people in their room are invited into it.

Realistically travel insurance is something everyone should have if they're traveling with a decent laptop (or phone, camera, etc), if you've got something worth thousands and are going somewhere that it's at least plausible it could get stolen then pay the minuscule amount for travel insurance, I mean my annual policy costs like $300 and covers all that crap.

If you've got sensitive data that will cost you if it's lost then you should be backing it up to multiple locations anyway as well.

Good thread and it got me thinking about upcoming trips. I tend to travel with a macbook pro and some camera gear. I was thinking about doing AirBnb soon to save on costs but i'm guessing if you're sharing a house the doors aren't lockable with a seperate key? That may be a deal breaker for me, even though it would save a lot of coin. Taking a girl back probably wouldn't be an issue, i prefer to never take a girl back to mine if i can help it anyway, unless it's a hotel on a short stay but you normally have to register the girl at the front desk or at least that's what i've had to do so far.

Old thread, but cloud storage + travel insurance + a good PacSafe-style bag that you can chain to the radiator or whatever. If somebody wants it, they're going to get it, but you can at least make it hard to take and hard to open.

I travelled through south and Central America and all across Europe and other places WITH my MacBook Pro 13" 2017 and I never once had a problem/issue. I never took it out of my apartment I was staying in and the girls that came over of course would see it but before I would even bring them into my apartment and let them see anything worth my money I would check the quality of women she is and if I get the slightest vibe of a thief then I would just lock it up (thankfully I have had this option at many apartments I stayed at as it was something I looked for when renting). So if you wanna bring home a random, go for it but just don't let them know/see you have it and hide it good (if you don't have the option of locking it up).

Yeah I was doing this when travelling, putting my laptop in my big ass suitcase and lock it. The bitch would have to leave with a big suitcase if she wanted my laptop. I felt also safer doing this when leaving my airbnb/hotel room.

I think the best way to avoid this kind of misadventure is to screen the girls the best you can, a bitch who can potentially still you might as well have many std’s so better to screen hard.
