RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
(03-01-2016 12:52 PM)Roosh Wrote:  What is the best home weapon is when you're unable to have a firearm? In this scenario, your attacker is using a crowbar to gain entry into your house and then pulls out an assault knife when he saw you in your pajamas.

Deciding would involve two factors. First, it should frighten the attacker into leaving. Second, it should be suitable with fighting the attacker while minimizing your risk of being wounded.

Here are some known options:

1. Baseball bat
Pro: good range, no skill needed to use
Con: hard to get full power in constrained spaces like hallways and doorways

2. Collapsible baton
Pro: hard weapon, can inflict serious damage
Con: may not scare attacker, short range

3. Standard baton
Pro: more scary than collapsible baton, longer range
Con: hard to use in constrained spaces

4. Crowbar
Pro: similar to baseball bat
Con: shorter range than bat

5. Assault knife
Pro: may not scare someone with larger knife
Con: short range, takes training to use effectively

6. Pepper spray
Pro: effective from distance
Con: risky to use indoors, may end up impairing yourself

7. Whip, sjambok
Pro: good range, extremely painful
Con: takes skill to use, might be hard to use indoors

8. Spear, machete, or sword
Pro: scary, deadly, good range
Con: may take training to use

9. Nunchuks
Pro: medium range, painful
Con: requires extensive training

To scare your attacker while having a superior weapon that could defeat a knife or club (but not firearm), it seems like a spear, machete, or sword is your best home defense option. Chances are your attacker will run when he sees he's up against something like this:

I think a spear is best because it has the longest range and only one movement to learn (thrusting). You can do that in narrow spaces. A crazed attacker who rushes you would just impale himself.

As insurance, maybe a collapsible baton on your belt in case he parries your spear and it gets to close combat.

Thoughts?

It's hard to answer this not knowing the exact laws where you live, but in addition to the defensive angle, I would want to consider the possibility of you being discovered with these weapons and the best way to avoid legal ramifications.

A lot of what you listed would still be difficult to get in some foreign countries, or if found the context may still get you in trouble. Ex: you have a spear, but it's part of your spearfishing gear and you are an avid scuba diver - probably not going to have trouble just for owning it and using it in an emergency.

Alternatively, you happen to have a replica Zulu warrior spear above the mantle and you grabbed that to fend off your attacker. Could be problems, could be ok - hard to say. Another scenario - you have a collapsable baton but live in an area where they are restricted to law enforcement only. Now you could have trouble - why do you have police equipment?

Short answer is do your homework on not only the type of weapon, but the circumstances under which you are allowed to possess, pack in checked luggage, etc. in addition to whether or not you even have a right to defend yourself, and if so, to what degree.

Of the items on the list, the safest thing to have around the house which isn't bad for defense and may still intimidate an attacker is a baseball bat, or a cricket bat if you are in a Commonwealth country. You probably won't get into trouble for having some ordinary sporting goods like those around the house, but with edged weapons the explanation factor goes up, even if legal where you are. Remember to keep your weapons not looking like weapons and not drawing attention to your domestic setting.

Nunchucks are illegal in lots of countries outside of a martial arts school and are not practical for hallways, staircases etc. anyway.

A good thing if you live up a flight of stairs night be a nice long broom handle in the event you need to shove an attacker down those stairs after poking him in the chest a couple of times. Nothing unusual about having a broom - or even just the handle - near the door.

Pepper spray actually isn't bad considering you'd be indoors - no breeze - and that stuff will literally make a grown man cry. Make sure it's pepper spray and not some bullshit mace with no active pepper ingredients. Also ensure it's legal to have. In some places like Canada, you aren't supposed to have that, but you can have bear repellent even though it's the exact same thing in a different can. Probably not a huge fine if you used that against a home invaders other than bears.

As others pointed out, a lot depends on where you've decided to live, layout of the place, other mitigating factors - proximity to police, lighting in the area, ambient noise, neighbors, etc.

Brass knuckles. One hard punch and you can brake someone's jaw or skull with that.

Anything goes as long as you are willing to use it. Father keeps a wooden part of pickaxe in his trunk. Bashed a gypsy with it after they stole something from him and finished an injured deer on a road. Fine Goulash was from that.. I mean the deer, not the gypsy.

In all seriousness, I've been thinking about knucke-dusters. What do you guys think about these? Not so much interested in increasing damage potential, but limiting damage to my own fists.

Alternatively, are there techniques to mitigate the likelihood of breaking your first while punching?

I got into a road-rage altercation this week, and was on the verge of fighting a guy on the street. Did not let it get that far, but it made me think about this all over again.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
All you guys focusing on specific items are setting yourself up for failure.

Seriously, an "assault knife"? You're going to run to the other side of your house specifically to the spot where you keep your fancy combat/hunting/survival knife? What about when you're in transit or in a public place? No favorite knife = what do you do? Your mind set of focusing on a specific item has now fucked you.

What you do is you grab the closest item available to you. If you're near the kitchen, you grab the steak knife. Shield? Grab the fucking cast iron skillet or a stool with legs facing forward.

Use your surroundings and don't focus on any specific tool, just know the techniques and adapt to your environment.

Everyday objects if you find yourself in a bad situation include:

-jackets and towels for entangling and distracting intruder's weapons
-kitchen and utility knives instead of "combat knives"
-frying pans, skillets, stools, small coffee tables as shields (if you don't own decent timber furniture, you're kidding yourself). Even couch cushions create an added layer of protection to penetrate through.
-brooms, snapped broom sticks, vaccuum pipes, rolled newspapers, sporting sticks as clubs and spear shafts
-pens, files, centre punches and general handtools for added impact
-shot glasses, whiskey glasses, golf balls, plates, coins as distracting throwing objects to give yourself time and distance
-belts, extension cords, ropes, bike chains for whipping and tangling
-salt, spray cans, oil, whatever is in the pot on the stove as blinders

The list of everyday objects is as endless as the amount of objects in your immediate area. You want a quick shield? The laptop or keyboard that you're typing on can take a strike and be thrown at someones head. Smash it into their nose with the edge and get the fuck out of trouble asap.

Your primary goal isn't to inflict as much damage as possible to the attacker(s) but to escape the situation unharmed. But if they get fucked up in the process during your own defence, well, they should not have attacked you in the first place.

I could write articles about this stuff but it should be common sense anyway.

Yes, you gotta use what's right around you. It might be wise to have a few innocent objects, like a golf club or things you listed, positioned at various places around the house or apartment. I keep a machete under my bed, and can get to it and into a strategic position in a matter of seconds. That seems like the most likely place you'd be at the time of a home invasion.

My apartment doesn't have any storage area, so I have to keep my toolkit under my bed. It wouldn't be nice to be hit with a solid metal spanner.

Jack in Melbourne has no combat experience. I guarantee it. Anyone attempting to stop a home invader with a rolled up newspaper would be better off just being compliant.

Really, what the fuck is so hard about keeping a cricket bat in a sports bag by your bed and reinforcing your main entrance(s)?

^I'm actually doubt Jack's even been in a fist fight. His well thought out ideas seems to revolve around blue-pilled tactics that I hear everyday Australians say (As if using a pen or your car keys give you a fighting chance with an attacker with a real weapon). A really good self defense tactic is simply not living in a cucked country like Australia or the UK that won't allow you to defend yourself.

A bayonet with a 303 for a handle will 180 all but the suicidal.

But absent guns if you care enough to spend a measely 500 bucks to save your life then buy a repro katana from a reputable brand seller and put it on a display mount. There's no law against having yellow fever.

Katanas are hard to use if untrained.

I think their main use is as legal proof that you didn't respond with maximum force.

You just "pushed away" the intruder with a baseball bat, if you intended to kill, you'd have used the sword.

As for the other mall ninja combat heroes, read the post properly. Nothing is off limits, if you have a handgun, use it *if it's within reach*. In fact, just get a handgun and wear it on you if it's legal where you are. But a fucking spear? Don't waste your money on being stupid. Improvise. Actually, I wouldn't assume that. I think found a vid of him on Youtube:

In seriousness I don't think his post was that bad, though I definitely don't cosign on everything in Jackin's list. I'm not going to be throwing coins or spraying Pam to stop or deter an invader.

Also relevant, skip to :57 seconds...

Ya ya, movie martial arts is vast majority bullshit and gives people serious delusions and misconceptions about fighting. But I think the Bourne and Taken movies are a bit above the rest (but my favorite is how the robots fight in iRobot).

Maybe if you stopped buying newspapers you could afford more spears. A broom handle might cost as little as ten bucks and you can sharpen it by rubbing the end against some pavers.

Given time, you could even save up more newspaper money and catch a bus to a nature trail where you could work on your stone age rock shaping skills. Get a job and you might even make it to the bronze age if you're lucky. Never stop learning, bro.
