It's a trail hawk I think; I bought it at least 10 years ago. The head is probably fine, it's just wobbly on the haft (bad fit) after I beat a bunch of stuff up with it and holding the head on with a screw is chintzy to begin with.

I haven't removed the head to see if it's tapered such that I could put a proper haft on it. If it isn't, I suppose I could drill a hole through the other side of the head, wedge it onto a haft as tight as possible, and then use a solid pin to hold it all together.

Assuming laws where you live are self defense friendly enough not to worry about lethality. I'd say a dogs would be the best. Followed by a crossbow. Followed by a mini spear or rapier [dueling sword]. Followed by a taser. A study showed something like 87% of people resisting gave up when an officer upholstered his taser and arced it. Of course a firearm trumps all of these. Ideally you can stack having a dog or two with having a weapon of your own.

Also op mentions wanting to scare people off. Any plan relying on optional compliance from potential attackers is flawed imho. Including pain compliance. You can't predict how people will respond; and I certainly wouldn't bet my life on it. Some people will simply fight though the pain [have heart]; pain will make some people fight harder due to anger or survival instinct; some people will be desensitized to certain types of pain [as any boxer, submission wrestler, mma fighter can attest to]; many people don't feel pain during a real fight [I don't], or your attacker may just be mentally ill or on drugs and pain or won't even enter the picture. Same goes with intimidation.

Imo the only strategies that should be relied on are ones that leave an opponent physically unable to attack you. Ideally you should hit your opponent with them before he even knows that you're even in the room. It's a sad state of affairs that because of retarded laws so many law abiding citizens around the world have to resort to using weapons developed in the middle ages to defend themselves from hardened criminals.

For the inevitable legal aftermath (if you are in a blue-state "cant defend yourself" locality), it is well to consider something that you can plausibly explain you 'just picked up and used' rather than a purpose-built melee weapon. Heavy jack handles, baseball bats, steel rake handles, kitchen knives, etc. Just a thought.

If you're going to keep a baseball bat, keep a baseball glove and baseball nearby too, you're lawyer will thank you. Also an extremely underrated weapon, a (non weaponized) college ring style ring. It's brass knuckles without obviously carrying around a weapon. Good for at home and out and about.

In my earlier post I said stun gun (short range) rather than taser as it has multiple shocks and maneurverability in close combat. Don't carry around obvious weapons like machete, swords, spears, that's just inviting trouble if you ever have to use them. Just carry a gun legally and have a permit for it. No one will judge you keeping a gun at home but a sword? Or multiple swords? A battle spear? You're guaranteed manslaughter by a jury using these things.

I also like the shield post, you can buy police riot shields, bullet proof!! Smash it against them to disable or disarm.

This one is pretty interesting, a nightstand that is easily disassembled into a club and shield. However, the problems I see with it are A) if you put the usual bedside accoutrements on it there's gonna be a big crash if you have to use it in a flash (although, if an aggressor breaks into your room while you're in bed, a broken lamp and spilled glass will probably be the least of your worries), but it may have a tactical benefit by causing a distraction. B) The club looks like it has a pretty short reach. C) a small wooden shield would be useless against a gun.

An MMJ farmer (in a legal state) I knew did. A pack of adults with puppies onsite means nobody sets foot in your yard without you knowing about it, and no stranger enters your house while you sleep without getting royally messed up.

Heavy duty Steel toed lineman type boots give you great stomping and kicking leverage when the aluminum baseball bat drops them to the ground and a strong bright red laser pointer will blind them in the eyes and make them think you have a gun with a laser sight.

Keep in mind the most dangerous thugs are high on drugs and vicious - often known to keep coming at you even if shot with a smaller caliber .22 or 9mm yet a taser or large bottle of bear repellent or mace will blind them and then use the aluminum baseball bat and boots to knock them out. You take away their eyesight and breathing and their attack is thwarted - then subdue them bat and boots.

Heavy tie wraps to hog tie them and roll up in a rug and dump off in the woods or vacant urban lot - very hard to get clean fingerprints off of tie wraps but use leather gloves because epithelial cells likely to stick while cinching.

I am not one to call cops because even if you are totally in the right with self defense - they can always accuse you of excessive force so restrain the thugs with tie wraps and dump them off in the boonies or a dumpster by the time they come too unlikely to remember where they were.

The problem with all of this is they sober up and come to their senses and remember where you live they can always use the element of surprise against you so why in the military it was never deploy your weapons unless you have to and if you have to - fight (or shoot) to kill.

If guns aren't an option, then the local laws probably would not look kindly on a sword skewering incident.
Your main mêlée weapon should be something plausibly deniable that you could keep out in the open, like a snooker cue.
A pepper spray gun is probably the most effective non-lethal method.

Prevention:
Ideally a detached house with a walled garden. Dogs are the original burglar alarm, and a wall is a wall.
Cameras on each corner of the house that creak when they rotate and have little red lights. Should turn their stomach nicely.
Being able to control the downstairs lights from your bedroom would be useful. Hear breaking glass, flip all the switches.
Most burglars target houses they think are empty. Half the battle is spooking them off.
Some kind of amplified airhorn alarm, combined with bright lights, would make your average thief flee.

I agree with everyone who has suggested getting a dog; however, in my opinion a large dog is overkill, as it will cost a lot more in feed, leaves bigger piles of shit and sheds more hair for little extra value since the main purpose of it is to frighten off the intruder (or at least give them pause) and to alert you so that you have time to prepare yourself to deal with the intruder, (by running away, calling law enforcement, or defending yourself). Even the friendliest dog will undergo a personality change into a vicious snarling beast if someone comes snooping around your house late at night or tries to force their way in. Unless the intruder is there specifically to injure or kill you and are well armed, they won't risk entering a home with a dog.

Pepper spray or bear spray is another good option since it doesn't require any training, and in the confined spaces of your home it will be very effective.

You can also take steps to intruder-proof your home by installing locks and deadbolts on interior doors.

What training exactly are you talking about, for using a baseball bat or an axe or even a short sword...?

Seriously, as a man (even a too-civilized Western man), if you can't instinctively figure out how to use a basic weapon like a bat or an axe, you have a problem. You grab the handle, you strike with the metallic end, no rocket science here.

But actually, I know what you are talking about: Many men in the western world would grab an axe, but before striking a home invader with it, they'd start trembling and sweating and I guess even crying... On the other hand, any EE or Asian (or African) man would just grab the axe and bash any invader's head and go back to sleep with a smile...

That's the Western world's current problem resumed and symbolized right here. We, as countries, don't know anymore how to react in self-defense... we let mass invaders, well, invade, without using force to stop them. Like some will to live has been broken in our societies.

The whole 'if you don't have training then the weapon is as dangerous to you as the bad guy' shtick is a lie peddled by those who'd keep you living in fear and dependent on a non-responsive police force.

What you need is a short, effective close range weapon which only requires gross motor skills to use (bludgeoning or stabbing weapon basically) and a whole load of real bad intentions.

I'm going to assume that anyone at risk of having trained killers come for them in the middle of the night is already aware of how to handle lethal scenarios, deal with trained motivated attackers and protect themselves against them.

That leaves everyone who is at risk of getting beaten up, raped or killed as part of a robbery gone wrong. This means the guys in your hallway are not there to kill you as a primary purpose, and they have not come with that outcome in mind. If you have the right attitude yourself, then you have the upper hand, because you are ready to use lethal force before they are. If you are armed, and committed to the fight, and you're not a total pussy/miserably outnumbered, then you should prevail, even against superior numbers, as confined spaces necessitate a more 1v1 style of fighting.

Ideally you'd either attack with the bad guys unawares, or draw them through a doorframe so that they have to come at you in single file. This will make a massive difference to your ability to survive the contact.

Problem I see with a sword or spear is that I think the average homeowner would be more hesitant to actually use it, and the average thug/home invader probably assumes so as well.

In a "very dangerous but not yet life-or-death" encounter, I would have serious reservations about actually stabbing with a spear, or slashing with a sharp sword or machete, into someone's body...potentially killing them, and more than likely causing myself massive legal issues and expense for the next 5 years of my life...

A bat, golf club, tennis racket or other blunt household object on the other hand, I would have very little hesitation about using on an intruder, possibly breaking his arm, bruising badly, or knocking unconscious. I'm sure this "intent to harm" attitude would be much more apparent to the intruder, vs. my unsure brandishing of a sword or spear with which I'd have wavering and conflicting thoughts about actually connecting with another human being's flesh.

Of course, this attitude of mine is probably the result of being pussified by an easy, non-violent suburban life... But it is what it is, I'm just trying to be honest with myself.

Nunchuks are surprisingly easy to learn how to use, it takes at most an afternoon.

I think a small knife is best if you think the odds are low that you will be attacked. It is reasonably inconspicuous, easy to take with you, can be hid, requires no maintenance, is useful for more than just defence and you are unlikely to get questions about why you have it. You can probably learn in a weekend enough to keep people off you.

If you think the odds are likely that you will get attacked are high, then whichever weapon you will have the most fun training is probably the best bet.

You need to start with your scenario. An attacker should face a number of perimeter defenses long before getting in your home to threaten you at all. The first priority is to make getting to you at all as difficult as possible.

1. You should have strong exterior lighting.

Your best play in this case is to get out through a door or window as far from the attacker's ingress as possible. Assuming that is not practicable:


5. You actually have 3 perimeters. Outer (yard), Medium (house walls and doors) and inner. The inner perimeter is where you make your stand if necessary. This perimeter should also feature solid doors and hardware. It is the delay system so that you can prepare to engage, and call for law enforcement. (Which your alarm system company should do for you already.)

6. Your focus should be on quickly disabling the attacker so that you can escape unharmed, not vanquishing them. The longer the fight goes on, the more chances they have to harm YOU.

7. The best weapons keep you at a distance from your attacker. And the best time to use those weapons is when your attacker cannot see you. With that in mind you have two good options.

- A common, dry chemical fire extinguisher, sprayed to the face.
- A 300 lumen + flashlight.

Either of these can be operated with one's weak hand while holding an impact weapon in the other. In a darkened room, 300+ lumens (I'd go higher) will completely destroy anyone's vision for well over a minute or more. Dry chemical (potassium bicarbonate) powder in the eyes and mouth will cause both choking and loss of vision.

8. In either event once deployed, it needs to be followed up with heavy strikes to the head/neck and/or knees. Either will likely incapacitate the attacker enough for you to get out. Keep in mind, this is your only objective.

If you choose a spear type weapon (love the ones you showed), stab straight to the midsection, twist, and leave the spear behind as you run away. Nothing fancy. Put your weight behind a straight thrust, twist, run.

Perimeter (prevention) first. Escape second. Failing that, rapid incapacitation, and escape.
