Tonight I'm sampling four delicacies at a local Beijing brewpub:

The Qu Brew

Inspired by Baijiu, brewed with sorghum and soured with Qu from a baijiu distillery in Inner Mongolia.

The Fifth Ring Red IPA

A hoppy Red IPA with five malts to represent the five ring roads that encircle central Beijing.

The Buck Wild Summer Lager

A light, crisp brew featuring Sichuanese buckwheat tea.

The Eightfold Path

An imperial stout featuring eight different malts, including hand-roasted Tibetan barley.

Why'd you get the bar wench to put a thumbs up in your photo?

That aside, The Eightfold Path sounds pretty scrumptious.

Look at what you are doing.

RE: Craft Beer and Micro-Brewery Thread
I make fairly routine trips to Hong Kong and Shenzhen several times a year. During each of my last two trips to Shenzhen, I tried out a local craft beer microbrewery.

Both were small, hole in the wall places, with mainly outdoor seating. Service was decent, however, and both had a pleasant, friendly feel that differed somewhat from the atmosphere in Beijing craft beer bars.

Crafthead

[Image: cf2c4444-6da8-11e6-af03-e675d0741f8a_660...k=z30CoVxU]

Bionic Brew

[Image: c63ae2be-6da8-11e6-af03-e675d0741f8a_660...k=JaeZhwY5]

Unfortunately, neither of these venues had impressive beer, although they did offer a range of flavours. However, the experience of my taste buds paled in comparison with what I've come to expect and appreciate in Beijing.

However, while Crafthead disappointed by only having two beers available on tap when I visited, Bionic Brew impressed with some very delicious pizza on the menu. I'll probably return, just for the pizza (created in collaboration with a separate business).

That sounds like a good business opportunity, microbreweries in China, high prices and cheap labor...

I feel like I owe you guys an apology.

As it turns out Kona Beer is not made in Hawaii.

I go to their Koko Marina location probably once a week. The wait staff has no problem lying to you and saying ALL of their beers are made on Oahu or Big Island. Its a scam.

The Kona brewing company is being sued:

Please forgive me.

My Favorite Styles:

Belgians
Stouts
Imperial Stouts
Czech Pilsner
Kolsch
Berliner Weissbier
Mothafuckin Guinness (not craft but I don't give a shit, sometimes you just need something you can drink 5 of)

It's all about context.

While I enjoy a well-made brew from time to time, I completely sympathize with the hate for craft beer. The craft beer culture has gotten out of control. Last time I went to a craft beer bar my bartender was a skinny-fat man with an ironic mustache and an avocado tattoo on his arm. He spent the entire time trying to lecture me about why Sours are the new IPA. Reminds me of the foodie subculture.

I also feel as though there's a lot of circle jerking and groupthink going on with certain highly rated beers. Most craft beers are overhyped and not very balanced. Americans are worse about this than Europeans. Ex. "If an IPA is good than a Triple IPA must be three times as good! Let's hop the shit out of everything!"

I don't want to sit and obsess about the flavors, I want what I'm drinking to taste good, be balanced, and be sessionable so that I can have a few over the course of conversation.

For a fun challenge, try to find a craft beer reviewer on youtube who doesn't have man boobs.

That guy is promoting a monthly craft beer club. I am talking about heavy posters who exclusively review beer. These are more typical of the guys I stumble upon through organic search when I've tried to get a heads up on a certain beer in the past:

Sam Adams has finally gotten over the stupid pumpkin spice craze. This year's Oktoberfest is a normal malty lager, thank the gods. Quite enjoyable with a brat.

Everything I've drunk has been fairly niche and regional, so unfortunately, I can't make any recommendations, unless you live in Beijing.

I found something genuinely unique yesterday at a nearby neighbourhood convenience store.

[Image: Belching-Beaver-Peanut-Butter-Milk-Stout...1503589796]

It's certainly worth a try. I definitely conveys the peanut butter flavor and is somewhat similar to the experience of what drinking Reece beer would be. However, I found the overall taste to be somewhat overwhelming and too sweet to go with savoury food. Drinking this straight without something to chew on is overwhelming, but I'm not sure what type of plate to pair it with. Perhaps something sour.

Suits you should try and get your hands on The Patsy by Barley Forge. It's a coconut stout. It's brewed here in CA locally though and I don't know if they ship to traitors of our country.

Craft cider counts, right? I had my favorite cider (both craft and non-craft) I've had so far the other day, from Washington State: LUMBERJACK: RHUBARB PEAR from Schilling.
ABV 6.0% TA 7 / 10 BRIX 2 / 6
Lumberjack is dry with a slight kiss of bright pear and tart rhubarb. Light, floral, earthy.

The dryness of this stuff is great, and reminds me of Champagne... I may have to start drinking this instead. The rhubarb tartness really makes this a unique cider in my opinion.
