For gloves, you should first decide which leather you want. I prefer pecary but if you don’t like pecary skin, look at suede or deerskin or lambskin (or carpincho but you won’t find it in Paris)

I you want thin gloves you should take them unlined, or with silk lining.

My favorite shops in Paris are http://www.1000gants.com (rue Saint Honoré) and http://www.acaba.fr (rue des Petits Champs). Vente Privée and BazarChic also have regular sales on gloves.

This British Warm coat arrived in the post yesterday. It fits almost perfectly (apart from the sleeve length) and feels like a suit of armour. Aesthetically, it's got an aristocratic, even commanding appearance to it, and it feels that way when I'm wearing it.

When worn this morning at -2°C, I was perfectly toasty, and I imagine it would be completely appropriate several degrees lower once I throw on more layers underneath including thermal underwear (I've worn a coat made of the same fabric in -20°C.

I generally don't prefer to wear parkas in town, anyway. The length is perfect, given that I ride my bike a lot.

Not sure about a guide but I had a pair from brooks brothers that I wore a lot until they got too wrecked from the excessive partying.

Why do you need a guide? Just go to Brooks Brothers, try them on, if they fit you buy and if they don't, well, don't.

Read up on the Basic Bastard as defined by Reddit's MFA, it'll give you a starting point.

As for the Dockers, take them out to the fire pit, douse them in petrol and set them on fire, horrible clothing for teens with no style or sense of fit.

I lost weight, and pleats/flaring is the problem.

I've had great dockers over the years, though never Brooks Brothers. I had a great pair that looked like a linen island shirt.

When I rebuy, I want to buy right this time.

Thanks Montrose those 2 websites are top, gonna have to visit their stores though cause gloves are like shoes, you need to try them on.

Went to Galeries Lafayette today and sample some Agnelle gloves, the leather quality is surprising and the lining are sublime. One pair has rabbit fur as lining, that was the softest thing I've touched in my life other than a virgin's thigh Prices are off the charts though, starting 140-180e.

As always with leather, the price reflects the quality.

Most of the time I like to go with a light-dark contrast when I'm in my outfits. A few days ago I picked up a dark red cashmere sweater for around 50 USD (discounted down from 125 USD) and I've already gotten compliments on it. It's a nice contrast to the khaki jeans and brown shoes that I wear.

If you're in the US, put Dappered.com on your daily or weekly reading list. They highlight most, if not all, of the sales of the US's major men's clothing chains. As far as after-Christmas sales, I think the best one is likely Nordstrom. Their dress shirts, especially, are usually on sale at 50-60% off at that time. They have three levels: 1901 (budget and oriented towards 20-somethings), Nordstrom, and John W. Nordstrom. Express shirts are about the same price as the Nordstroms but their quality is much lower.

Indochino (made-to-measure, which is not fully custom because they use pre-cut patterns) had a 50% off sale on their suits for Black Friday so I got a new charcoal gray interview suit for about $400 instead of the usual $800 (for a three piece). It hasn't arrived yet so I'll post what I think about it after I get it and wear it.

Spier & Mackay is a Canadian company who may have the best off-the-rack suits for the money right now, perhaps the same level of quality as Suit Supply but cheaper (about $350 for a two-piece at full price). I believe they'll have a big sale after Christmas also. I bought a couple of Super 110 wool pants on sale from them last winter for about $85 each which is a good price for that fabric.

Its getting really cold outside nowadays, so i was thinking about buying a hat, but first i wanted to ask you guys: What kind of hat would you wear with an overcoat or peacoat? Or just what style if you want it to be little bit less casual, smart casual or smthg like that.
Flat caps really sparked my interest lately, but few pages back i didnt seem that much of appreciation towards them. Should i avoid them, and just get a round one that covers my ears too?

Mine's made of real rabbit fur, with a quilted lining; so it's incredibly warm.

On the surface, partly because they're nowhere near as common these days, not every man can pull off both these hats and caps, but the fit and material is everything.

For instance, a flat cap that's too small in proportions, or where the peak disappears into the crown or is too elongated like a duck's bill:



Will make the wearer look like a complete cnut.

These will be appropriate for anything smart casual and upwards. IMO a beanie doesn't come anywhere near the equation.

Unless they come with built-in ear flaps, flat caps and newsboy caps — like brimmed hats — sacrifice ear, cheek, and nape protection.

A military surplus winter cap, or something in that style, would be the answer:

It kind of depends on the shape of your face. Narrower flat caps are what I wear because I have a smaller head. Kangol makes wool flat caps you can wear in the winter and bamboo thread ones for the summer. You can wear a flat cap with a suit if the material it's made of isn't too rugged in texture. Most, if not all, Kangols can be worn with a suit, peacoat, or overcoat.

A knit cap/wool beanie can also be worn with formal clothing. It works somehow. Around this time of year is a good time to buy them, because many retailers will put their cashmere caps on sale. I have some cheap cashmere knit caps in various colors I bought from H&M last year that were about $20 each but I can tell they're made with crap cashmere because they have a slightly oily texture to them and they aren't as warm as I think they should be. Other retailers like Nordstorm, JCrew, Lands End and the like will have better quality cashmere for about $35-60 each.

Thanks for the replies.
At kangols and jcrews sit i didnt really find much that i liked, and except kangol they didnt really gave too much variation. So i looked on other brands, like baileys hats. I dont know anything about them, but i quite like their hats, altough i wont buy from them cause they are quite expensive for me.
But for general i found hats like these quite nice, and ill leave some link as well. H&m has 2 similar lke on the pic for like 15-20$, so i might buy one from them. But i guess the price difference resembles in the quality as well.

I'll have to check his inventory physically to see if he has any new design, but based on the success of this one I think I'll just stick to this style.

My big concern is picking the color, since I'll have to buy the materials. The above is in light grey and now I need another color.

I like my coats in dark color, i.e black or dark navy but given this style these colors would get me mistaken for a stylish Red Army Comissar or witch hunter

Get a proper set of hair clippers for this, beard trimmer on the rest of the head will a) blow it apart real fast and b) do a sloppy looking job. A good set of barber shop style clippers will do the head properly and be just as efficient on the beard. A decent set wont set you back that much and they'll last a decade if you take care of them. Also pretty easy to travel with as a decent set will come with a kit bag normally.

Then you can pick up a cheap razor to keep the cheeks and neck clean as well as around the mouth. Unless you've got particularly sparse facial hair, these two areas are the ones that will grow "wild" and make you look unkempt.

Alternatively one of the positives of that look is that haircuts become a lot cheaper, quicker and easier so you can also get by without your own set if you regularly get hair cuts.

Ultimately your face shape will dictate how well that look works, if you've got prominent cheek bones and a strong jawline that look works great. It also will draw more attention to your eyes, so if they're a strong point, it helps. Some people just have weird egg shaped heads when they shave it which can't be overcome.

At the end of the day, the key to that kind of look is to own it. If you're thinning you can either embrace it, get ahead of it and shave it or you can go down the chemical/surgical paths of fighting it. Personally I sport a look similar to that and I've done considerably better with that look than I ever did with a full head of hair, I actually love it, super low maintenance, never takes more than a couple of minutes to get ready, save a ton of money on hair products and hair cuts, honestly wish I'd started doing it a good 5 years before I did!
