I always hated friends too but I can understand why it appeals to certain foreign audiences.

It's light and the comedy is feel good low level comedy. It appeals to people with basic english and basic knowledge of U.S. culture. It hit it big in the U.S. because it appeals to the broadest spectrum of american women sensibilities.

It's not too different from some poorly acted tv serials in asia in structure too. Poorly acted comedy/romance tv serials are also wholely consumed by women.

Basically:

You have a house and some chode walks in and makes some "funny" comment, the girl reacts with another one liner, some situational scenario is set up (wedding, birthday, reunion, date, etc..), comedy happens in the situation, they make out, then the episode comes to a conclusion.

I actually do respect David Schwimmer a bit though. He was pretty good in Band of Brothers in the role of a total asshole which was a pretty good piece of acting or might actually be how he is in real life.

I once watched How I Met Your Mother with a plate once and the behavior of the men and women in the show is beyond repulsive. The women are cunts and the men are bitches but this plate ate it all up like that shit was normal. And the one semi-player guy is a out and proud faggot in real life (so no one takes him seriously).

Not to discount other significant factors like militant feminism, political correctness, etc, etc but I think these two shows (along with lesser popular shows that made men look like bitches) had significant influence in creating beta bitch men and cunty snarky women

Probably an honest oversight and no biggie but a bit suspect nonetheless.

My stepdaughter was obsessed with Friends, and I can tell you exactly why. She didn't have many friends. And, being a typical girl, she felt superior to every member of her family, so. . . she fantasized, and, in truth, actually believed to a certain extent, that these were her real friends, or at least the real friends that she deserved to have.

When you think of the nineties, and on into the early two thousands, you get the rise of the helicopter parents, and the isolation in many ways of children, the cocooning, and the over protectiveness, you are seeing the beginning of the millennial mindset, remembering that we are excluding members of this forum, so let's not go down that road, and what you see is children who feel simultaneously insecure and transcendent.

Friends came out at a time just before kids had the option of instant messaging, texting, and whatever the name of that thing before Facebook, oh yeah, Myspace, so what you had was a whole generation of people turning inward, fine tuning their own personal preferences and predilections, and turning away from the actual people who they lived with and had communication with every day.

But, SAD FACE, no Tumblr yet. Guess I will just have to customize my desktop all over again.

Now, as pleased with themselves as this whole cohort became, deep down inside they knew on some primordial inchoate level that there was something big missing in their lives, something they couldn't quite put their fingers on.

And ta da! Friends comes along, and fills this need for community exactly.

So in a way, analyzing the writing or the acting is completely irrelevant.

Friends was exactly what this show was, friends for the friendless, but without the risk of actually going out and having to make friends with real people. At about the time that sites like Friendster were coming out.

Just think how it solved the friend problem for the inflated egos of so many scared little people. It was inspirational and aspirational, these six good looking ,basically interchangeable, affluent young men and women, who seemed to always be there for each other, and whose lives were so filled with fun and laughter and white people problems.

Couldn't the chubby little preteen to teenage girl just think, yeah, this is the life I was meant to have, as soon as I get away from my disaster of a family? Didn't she have three guys to moon over? And three non threatening and cute girls to identify with?

I don't think it was popular because of any great insight or writing, no, it was the timing. It came out and fulfilled a need for a bunch of lonely youngsters at the perfect time in history, and now that need is being fulfilled by social media, and Friends is no longer really necessary, except as nostalgia for people who happened to grow up with it, and you can't blame anyone for the things they grew up with. People grow out of this stuff naturally anyway.

It fulfilled a need, in a particular time and place, no more, no less.

Although, full disclosure, I did and do think Lisa Kudrow is pretty fucking funny.

This new Netflix Original show 'Love' has been shoved in my face for the past week, so I watched the pilot episode just now. The main character is a feminine faggot who gets cuckolded by his girlfriend in the first 10 minutes because he smothers her with "I love yous" and shit. Some real unintended red pill shit right there. I think the rest of the show (which I won't watch) follows his life as he moves out and dates this woe-as-me, life-sucks, drug-abusing Los Angeles loser.

This isn't a sitcom, but it's worth throwing in this thread. Friends aired about 20 years ago which as The Black Knight said was the basic mainstream introduction of the feminized western man. How I Met Your Mother aired about 10 years ago which took it a step further. And now this shit aired a couple days ago, which takes it to lengths I've never seen. Honestly, I've never seen a straight male character so gay.

It's getting worse, guys.

Like many here, I've never watched a single episode of Friends. I'd stumble upon it every once in a while but would always change the channel after a few seconds. I wasn't really into sitcoms and this one seemed rather unfunny.

I did follow HIMYM though. Actually, I watched the whole damn series with my friends. Of couse, those were our blue pill days. While something seemed wrong about the different relationship dynamics, I didn't think too much of it.

There's truth to this now I'm remembering in the 90s? Every girl you opened wanted to talk about the show I didnt watch it but really only watched what was on when I was passing out in those days..

I can remember now after seeing this that the women were kinda upset if you didn't know about it.

Just part of the overall lesson here....to the maximum extent possible, limit/eliminate TV time. There is so much more you could be doing than vegetating in front of a television set.

I watch some football, certain movies, and documentaries from time to time. I haven't watched a 'sitcom' in at least 15 years.

Agreed. I've cut way back on sports. I do like "Sunny in Philly" though. My favorite show on TV. "The League" got old, but the ball breaking on it was at times, epic.

I also like: "Tyrant", "The Strain" and "Fargo". That's about it for shows.

I have about 50-ish movies (mostly classics) that I'll watch.
