RE: The Syria conflict thread
Another day in Syria, another day the US using white phosphorus.
On October 13, warplanes of the US-led coalition carried out a series of airstrikes with phosphorous bombs on the ISIS-held town of Hajin on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Quote:The US-led coalition bombed several areas in the town of Hajin, 110km east of the city of Deir Ezzor, with internationally forbidden white phosphorous bombs,” a local source told SANA adding that the airstrikes didn’t result in any casualties.
Yuri Shvytkin, deputy chair of the Russian parliament’s lower house’s defense committee said the U.N. and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) should investigate the US-led coalition use of phosphorous bombs in Syria if the incident in Hajin is confirmed.
With God's help, I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

As a person of interest (Israeli), the way that the powers do it is by PROXY.
The US will not use ISIS, and will need a very strong justification for regime change.
As for "hot war" - currently unlikely, as everyone does not have an interest in warming things up.
Iran would love to heat it up, as a way to "stir the pot" around Syria (and weaken Israel and Turkey). However they are currently making an effort to establish position in Syria.
As I see it, there is a status-quo, but a fragile one.
Yeah, proxy, but the civil war excuse is about to run out. And now Assad and Putin will be looking at everyone like "What are you guys still doing here?"
I'm sure my country will come up with some bullshit reason, we basically do whatever we want on this planet militarily.
My concern about a "hot war" remains about accidents, not an intentional escalation. So many players in Syria, some accident happens against allied forces and suddenly things escalate. Because I sure as hell don't trust Trump to ignore a jet being shot down like Putin. I've pretty much given up on him following through on pulling out.
I know you guys don't like Iran in there, but as long as they were invited by Assad I'm not particularly concerned. I think when the oil sanctions kick in they're going to have serious problems and be forced to withdraw. We're pretty serious about stopping people from buying it. I wouldn't trust Erdogan as far as I could throw him, ya'll shouldn't either. Israel lies on former Ottoman empire sand.

The latter can't even project power outside it's own capital city. It's barely a country at all. Not only is Assad much more powerful with an actual military but he has powerful and numerous allies. US and it's allies want that pipeline, Russia does not. There are many agendas playing out here like you said. We can't hang out and no one notices or cares for the next half century like Afghanistan.

We wont know until the coming decades but the USA, NATO and Israel are not going to sit back and allow those resources to go un-tapped, especially now we are seeing the start of resource wars 2.0 this century.
If we leave Afghanistan - where no NATO/US soldier is on the ground except a small contingent of < 1000 troops then I will be very surprised. Too much is at stake there and I dont mean the politicians and civilian necks.
Regime change is just code for "our guy" and failing that we take the land, which Israel seems to be an expert in undertaking, just look at the Golan heights.
Do you guys have troops in Afghanistan too? I thought it was basically just us at this point. And yeah, we're never leaving. Ever. The American public has already memory holed the mere existence of Afghanistan too, so it won't be hard for indefinite occupation. Sure would be nice if we could siphon some profits off their resources and that crop they like to grow to help pay off the massive costs of propping up their joke of a country. But I doubt it. And if we do/are then it'll just be going in someone's pocket.
Syria is clearly very important to Russia, I don't think US/NATO gets their way so easily this time.

As tragicomic as it is, this Sopranos-style assassination probably netted Saudi Arabia more positive PR than being on the Human Rights Council AND allowing women to drive combined. It's extremely evil, cruel and barbaric, sure, but it's also immensely memorable and visceral.
The international image of a fat evil slob sitting on his oil reserves and cowering behind foreign mercenaries just got transformed into that of a stout evil butcher sitting on his oil reserves and dismembering whomever dares to get in their way.

Not too sure how legit this website is.
US Navy deploys super carrier to Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran, Syria
Now this is a sensational headline not worth reading into but the article does have some good stuff that anyone clued up on Syria would know is completely in favour of Israel, Saudi and (((Global order))).
Quote:A carrier strike group led by the Nimitz-class supercarrier USS John C. Stennis has arrived in the Middle East, ending an eight month period without a US carrier based in the region, the US Navy has reported.
The carrier group will be based with the 5th Fleet, whose zone of responsibility includes the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf, and will be stationed in the region for at least two months.
According to the US government-funded news service Voice of America, the carrier strike group is being deployed to “help in the fight against the Islamic State terror group in Iraq and Syria and the war in Afghanistan.”
Furthermore, a defence official confirmed earlier reports that the US was beefing up its presence in the region as a “message” to Tehran, telling VOA that “just being there is a show of force to Iran.”
The carrier group’s presence is expected to have a similar effect as the US base in at-Tanf, southern Syria, the official added.
The US established an illegal garrison at at-Tanf in 2016, justifying the deployment as part of its war against Daesh. Damascus and its allies have repeatedly accused the US of using the base to retrain and reequip former Islamist militia to continue the war against the Syrian government.
On Thursday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford said that the US would have to train 35,000 to 40,000 more “local forces” to “provide stability” in eastern Syria, where US-backed Syrian Kurdish forces took control following Daesh’s expulsion from the region.
Washington, which originally justified its presence in Syria by the war against terrorism, has altered its reasoning for remaining in the country following Daesh’s decline. In September, Trump national security advisor John Bolton said that the US military would stay in Syria until alleged Iranian-backed militias also left the country.
The message is clear to Assad and Iran. We have thousands of militants, aka, Sunni Islamists ready to take orders and destroy your country from within.
Imagine being told you're the good guys when your actions tell a different story.
> Illegal military base which is expanding
> Guards the area around it
> Kills your forces if you come near
> Tells you your regional ally it cannot defend you and must leave
Same shit, different US Admin. Russia isn't going anywhere but they want to reduce their forces in the country due to costs. If Iranian-backed groups leave (shia forces) then Assad is exposed to a resurgent Sunni force which has not been truly defeated.

Hey now, let's remember our history here. The Korean war wasn't so hot for Truman and Douggy Mac either. Heck, the PLAAF actually fought American WW2 aces plane-to-plane over the Yalu River on multiple occasions. Let's call that one a tie.
Vietnam was a near-complete loss, again due to Sino-Soviet support of the Cong.
After Khruschev and Mao split, all the Presidents from Nixon on got to do pretty much what they liked.
