I just came across this video. It is a speech given at the University of Ontario in 1989. He talks about the highly, highly controversial topic of the genetic differences between races and how they affect behaviour and achievement. The content isn't what I want to highlight - instead I want to highlight the reaction of the audience.

I'm sure that many in the audience strongly disagree with his ideas. There are probably many who are highly uncomfortable listening to his ideas. But notice how nobody is trying to shout him down. In fact the only time someone tries to interrupt him, the audience politely shushes her. People are quietly considering what he has to say and are probably coming to their own conclusions.

This is what a real university should look like. Only 26 years later, watching this video almost seems a little strange.

The irony in this is just too much, because I'm sure the voices like Kampeas are precisely the type of people that were fully calling for the EU to accept as many migrants as it possibly could without regard to their host nations' identities.

It seems this whole unbridled campus protest wave of last year finally crossed into a no-fly zone. They can viciously and incessantly attack and shame all types of people whom they deem to be "privileged", but the minute they start attacking Israel the red flags go up. Sheltered College Kids Demand Safe Spaces After Party Featuring Tiny Sombreros And Tequila

Massive politically-correct outrage has broken out at a liberal arts college in Maine because people wore some sombreros at a tequila-themed party.

The party occurred in late February at Bowdoin College, where a year of tuition, fees and room and board costs $61,354.

A group of female students had decided to host a birthday party for a friend, reports Campus Reform.

After the party, photos appeared of white students festooned with brightly colored, miniature sombreros — perhaps the size of cereal bowls — on their heads.

On Feb. 22, Bowdoin’s dean of student affairs, Tim Foster, blasted out a school-wide email assuring students that both he and school president Clayton Rose were personally dedicated to investigating the small, tequila-themed party.

Bowdoin’s student council unanimously issued a “statement of solidarity” to “stand by all students who were affected by the” incredibly tiny sombreros at the “‘tequila’ party that occurred on 20 February 2016.”

Tiny sombreros and tequila consumption “will not and should not be tolerated by the Bowdoin community,” the student council statement proclaims.

The “offensive” party was an “act of cultural appropriation” that “creates an environment where students of color, particularly Latino, and especially Mexican, students feel unsafe,” the statement further declares.

The statement also demands that school officials create “a supportive space for students who have been or feel targeted, for as long as students deem necessary.”

A student who actually attended the party wrote anonymously to Barstool Sports to explain that the party was a great time. The complaining students are a bunch of no-fun whiners, the student said.

“We enjoyed our first year here, but recently we’ve found ourselves right in the middle of an authoritarian takeover by PC culture and its crooked army,” the student wrote. “Anyone with half a brain can see that there was no malicious intent or hatred from the author (who, by the way, is half Columbian) [sic].”

(“The author” refers to the student who created the party invitation.)

“We just want our administration and student government to know that there are a lot of people here that really disagree with them,” the student also wrote. “Can you not drink tequila or wear a sombrero anymore if you aren’t Mexican? What do these people think they’re going to accomplish? The way they reacted to this mundane event is nothing short of bananas.”

Butler’s protest gained strong momentum when he convinced 32 University of Missouri football players to pledge to boycott all team activities until Wolfe quit his job. How times change.When I attended OSU back in the 70's, all the protesters came from outside the campus. The really hilarious ones were from the Revolutionary Communist Party, I shit you not. We feel many administrators and faculty could benefit from training to be better prepared to teach and engage with students from underrepresented groups.
We feel that Clemson does not embrace its students from underrepresented groups, which makes those students feel as though they are not part of the Clemson Family.
Current List of Student Demands

We want President Clements to immediately make a public statement from Clemson University—to students, alumni, faculty, staff, administration and media—denouncing both the Crip’mas Party and hateful statements from members of the Clemson Family via social media (Yik Yak, Facebook, Twitter). Additionally, we want a public commitment from the Clemson University Administration to prosecute criminally predatory behaviors and defamatory speech committed by members of the Clemson University community (including, but not limited to, those facilitated by usage of social media).
We want the construction of a multi-cultural center, a safe space for students from underrepresented groups.
We want more funding for organizations whose primary constituencies are of under-represented groups (international students, students of color, LBGTQA community, etc.).
We want the percentage of people of color in faculty and administration increased.
We want the names of offensively named buildings, ex. Tillman Hall, changed.
We want incentivized diversity training for administrators and faculty.
We want “Diversity” included as a Clemson University core value, starting with a “diversity”/university history component added to the CU1000 course.

The best part is, a board meeting was held today, in which anyone affiliated with the university can go and air grievances or bring attention to anything else they might think warrants the board's attention. No one showed up to do so. Proof they don't want change, they want drama.

So glad I graduated when I did, hopefully grad school won't be this bad.

Minnesota Faculty Considers Tough New Free Speech Protections

As students across the country retreat into safe spaces and call campus authorities over even mildly offensive speech, often with the support of administrators, one college aims to buck the trend.

The faculty of the University Of Minnesota At Twin Cities is considering a motion that would make free speech the college’s “paramount value.” If passed, it would, according to Inside Higher Ed, represent “the strongest such affirmation seen on any campus.”

One of the primary aims of the motion is to make it easier for controversial speakers to come to campus without being “shouted down.” As we reported in March, Professor Dale Carpenter, a faculty member who is championing the proposal, specifically cited the fraught visit of Breitbart Tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos and American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers as a catalyst for the motion.

The faculty’s proposed statement contains four key principles in defence of free speech, including a specific protection for speech that may be considered “hateful.”

1.) A public university must be absolutely committed to protecting free speech, both for constitutional and academic reasons
2.) Free speech includes protection for speech that some find offensive, uncivil, or even hateful.
3.) Free speech cannot be regulated on the ground that some speakers are thought to have more power or more access to the mediums of speech than others
4.) Even when protecting free speech conflicts with other important University values, free speech must be paramount

The faculty has also published a second draft document, proposing a number of actions to promote these four goals. These include the possible creation of a “Free Speech Advocate” on campus, as well as a pledge to “vigorously defend” when “serious disruption” is anticipated.

According to the document, this could take the form of ” chanting, persistent heckling, or other noisy demonstrations that make it difficult or impossible for the audience to hear what the speaker is saying.”

Sounds familiar!

According to Professor Carpenter, students have already started protesting the proposals. One student allegedly called for “discursive affirmative action” to correct “perceived imbalances of power and influence among speakers.” Of course, as Carpenter notes, this specifically contradicts the third principle of the Faculty Senate’s proposals.

The proposals are likely to come before the Senate again when college resumes in the fall semester.
