So today I found this tweet from Steven Pinker.

The University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, an irony-free campus, declared the phrase “politically correct” a microaggression. The master of Yale’s Pierson College said his regrettable title reminds distressed students of slavery. Wesleyan University’s student government threatened to cut the school newspaper’s funding because it published a column critical of campus leftists. Wesleyan created a “safe space,” a.k.a. a house, for LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM students (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Flexual, Asexual, Genderf---, Polyamorous, Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, Sadism/Masochism).

A Washington State University professor said she would lower the grade of any student who used the term “illegal immigrants” when referring to immigrants here illegally. Another Washington State professor warned in his syllabus that white students who want “to do well” in his “Introduction to Multicultural Literature” should show their “grasp of history and social relations” by “deferring to the experiences of people of color.” Another Washington State teacher, in her syllabus for “Women & Popular Culture,” warned that students risk “failure for the semester” if they use “derogatory/oppressive language” such as “referring to women/men as females or males.”

The University of Tennessee’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion, worried that students might be uncomfortable with gender-specific pronouns (“he,” “she,” “him,” “her”), suggests gender-neutral noises (“ze,” “hir,” “xe,” “xem,” “xyr”). The University of California system’s sensitivity auditors stipulated that “hostile” and “derogatory” thoughts include “I believe the most qualified person should get the job” and “America is the land of opportunity.” The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point’s list of racial microaggressions includes “America is a melting pot” and “There is only one race, the human race.”

Some Johns Hopkins University students proclaimed themselves microaggressed by the possibility of a Chick-fil-A restaurant on campus. (Chick-fil-A’s chief executive defines marriage as Barack Obama did until 2012.) Mount Holyoke College canceled its annual production of “The Vagina Monologues” because it is insufficiently inclusive regarding women without vaginas and men who, as the saying goes, “self-identify” as women. “Gender,” said a student, “is a wide and varied experience, one that cannot simply be reduced to biological or anatomical distinctions,” and the show “is inherently reductionist and exclusive.”

Writing in the University of California at Berkeley paper, two geographically challenged students objected to a class featuring Plato and Aristotle and other “economically privileged white males from five imperial countries (England, France, Germany, Italy and the United States).” A branch of the University of California at Irvine’s student government passed a resolution against the display of flags. Written by a student in the School of Social Ecology ( “transformative research to alleviate social inequality and human suffering”), the resolution said flags are “weapons for nationalism” and “construct” dangerous “cultural mythologies and narratives” and “paradigms of conformity” and “homogenized standards” and interfere with “designing a culturally inclusive space.”

Students on Columbia University’s Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board suggested trigger warnings for persons who might be traumatized by reading, say, Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” wherein some myths portray bad sexual behavior. But a feminist blog warned that the phrase “trigger warning” itself needs a warning attached to it because it might remind people of guns. But, then, the word “warning” might [substitute word for “trigger”] fright.

So, today give thanks that 2015 has raised an important question about American higher education: What, exactly, is it higher than?

I disagree. Repetition and ridicule are the best ways to deal with fuckwits like these guys - this Master Protest Thread is a good step in that direction. Repetition because if idiots keep saying it, the audience gets numb to the supposed issue contained in it and they forget about it -- and ridicule because, per Alinsky's own rules for radicals, ridicule is one of the few weapons it's more or less impossible to defend against, and generally parody is a pretty good shield to defamation proceedings.

Agreed. I think a big reason why the left was done so well in winning the cultural war for the last 15 years or so is because they've had people on their side who are excellent at political ridicule and satire. Some people might think I'm being flippant because certainly you can't win a cultural war with viral internet videos and memes can you? I would argue that if anything those are the primary weapons in today's media obsessed culture. Most people these days get their opinions formed from a witty picture they briefly looked at for a few seconds while scrolling through their Twitter or Facebook feed and the generation who has grown up with this their entire lives are starting to come of age. It has to be admitted then when it comes to being smarmy and smug the left leaves the right in the dust and the current spirit of the times rewards smarminess and smugness.

The cultural left has had guys like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and the right hasn't really had anyone that could match them - until perhaps now. Now we have guys like Milo Yiannopoulos and Gavin McGiness who are witty and despite not being millennials themselves seem to have knack for speaking their language without coming off as a grandpa trying to be "radical". The left has had major victories but despite the right suffering set backs the advantage that it has now is it is starting to acquire the cool counter-culture identity that used to be the property of the left. So in other words, it's right-wingers that are the punk rockers while the left-wingers are "the man" and the establishment. Now the right wingers can be the plucky underdogs while the left will be the uncool corporate fogies.

I don't know man. I mean, Milo and Gavin are cool but the exposure they get compared to someone like Colbert is...well, nonexistent. Our leftists are different from leftists of years prior in the degree of their fanaticism. They're essentially rabid dogs. It remains to be seen whether ridicule and satire will work in the long run. I honestly think more drastic measures will have to be taken.

You're right both of those guys are very much still mostly an internet phenomenon. I was speaking more about the wit and their abilities in satire and throwing shade - for the longest time right-wingers didn't have anyone like that - rather then the amount of exposure they get.

The president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University began his recent open letter to students with a story it appears he could hardly believe himself.

This past week, I actually had a student come forward after a university chapel service and complain because he felt ‘victimized’ by a sermon on the topic of 1 Corinthians 13,” Piper explained in his letter posted to the school’s website. “It appears that this young scholar felt offended because a homily on love made him feel bad for not showing love! In his mind, the speaker was wrong for making him, and his peers, feel uncomfortable.”

And with that, Piper apparently had enough.

“I’m not making this up,” he continued. “Our culture has actually taught our kids to be this self-absorbed and narcissistic! Any time their feelings are hurt, they are the victims! Anyone who dares challenge them and, thus, makes them ‘feel bad’ about themselves, is a ‘hater,’ a ‘bigot,’ an ‘oppressor,’ and a ‘victimizer.’”

Piper went on to explain to students that the familiar feeling of “discomfort” when confronted with wrongdoing is called a “conscience” — and that the “goal of many a good sermon is to get you to confess your sins—not coddle you in your selfishness” or help you achieve “self-actualization.”

If you want the chaplain to tell you you’re a victim rather than tell you that you need virtue, this may not be the university you’re looking for. If you want to complain about a sermon that makes you feel less than loving for not showing love, this might be the wrong place.

If you’re more interested in playing the “hater” card than you are in confessing your own hate; if you want to arrogantly lecture, rather than humbly learn; if you don’t want to feel guilt in your soul when you are guilty of sin; if you want to be enabled rather than confronted, there are many universities across the land (in Missouri and elsewhere) that will give you exactly what you want, but Oklahoma Wesleyan isn’t one of them.

At OKWU, we teach you to be selfless rather than self-centered. We are more interested in you practicing personal forgiveness than political revenge. We want you to model interpersonal reconciliation rather than foment personal conflict. We believe the content of your character is more important than the color of your skin. We don’t believe that you have been victimized every time you feel guilty and we don’t issue “trigger warnings” before altar calls.

There's a protest movement on at Princeton to remove Woodrow Willson's name from the school of International Relations/Public Affairs because he was a big racist.

One could have a fun thought experiment where things are taken to their logical conclusion and you have to rename everything that is not SJW-approved...

For instance: Washington, DC is bad because George Washington had slaves. Therefore, we should rename it George Washington Carver, DC. Problem solved.

Virginia is named after the "virgin" Queen Elizabeth. That's "oppressive" to modern liberated women. I propose we rename the state with the sexy-positive monicker "Slutopia".

A black graduate of Kean University in New Jersey was accused on Tuesday of fabricating threats on Twitter against black staff members and students that led officials to heighten security on campus, the authorities said.

Grace H. Park, the acting Union County prosecutor, said the former student, Kayla-Simone McKelvey, 24, was charged by summons with one count of creating false public alarm in the third degree. If convicted, Ms. McKelvey, of Union Township, faces up to five years in prison, according to state law.

Prosecutors say Ms. McKelvey is a self-proclaimed activist who made the threats on Nov. 17 during a rally on racial issues at the Union campus. Midway through the demonstration, prosecutors said, she left and went to a university library, where she created an anonymous Twitter account. After posting several threats, Ms. McKelvey returned to the rally, where she told others about the threats, but did not say she had made them, according to Ms. Park.

The messages were posted under the account @keanuagainstblk. Twitter suspended the account, but according to screen shots of the messages circulated on social media, one made reference to a bomb on campus, while others were about shooting black people on campus.

There was never a plan to harm students, and Ms. McKelvey was charged after a joint investigation conducted by a unit in the prosecutor’s office and the Kean University police, Ms. Park said. She was ordered to make her first court appearance in the case on Dec. 14 in a courtroom in the Union County Jail.

Ms. McKelvey could not be reached on her cellphone for comment on Tuesday, and it was not known whether she had retained counsel. She graduated from Kean in May with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, said Susan Kayne, a university spokeswoman.

The president of Kean University, Dawood Farahi, addressed the investigation during a program at the campus student center on Monday. In prepared remarks, he said the university was “saddened” to learn that the person responsible for the threat had been a participant in the rally and a former student.

“As a diverse academic community, we wholeheartedly respect and support activism,” he said. “However, no cause or issue gives anyone the right to threaten the safety of others. We hope this information will begin to bring a sense of relief and security to the campus community.”

The school had remained open after the threats were made, but many students chose to stay home. Some people began to call for Dr. Farahi to resign, saying he was not doing enough to calm racial tensions on campus.

In his prepared remarks, Dr. Farahi said a threat assessment conducted immediately after the authorities learned of the messages had concluded there was no significant safety threat. He said he had previously withheld that information for fear of compromising the investigation. He spoke at a program entitled Conversations on Civility and Acceptance.

“This conversation today is valuable, important and a reflection of who we are,” he said. “We need to keep talking.”

Speaking of hoaxes, the Washington Post is now reporting that a Yale investigation found "no evidence" of racism at frat party alleged to have been for "white girls only." This is the party that a female minority student named Neema Githere created a furor about when she posted on Facebook.

The "dean of student engagement" (WTF?) sez: "the findings do not provide grounds for the Yale College Dean’s Office to pursue formal disciplinary action against any student or group of students.”

I included a link -- I usually don't do so for big media. But since people on the left rarely if ever own up to this stuff, I think they should get Web clicks for such stories when they do (even if this story contains several caveats). Anyway, maybe they'll do more such reporting if they find there's an audience for it.

Our goal was to provide a framework for you to engage in conversations with peers and family members as you return home for the winter break, however, it was not effectively presented and it ultimately caused confusion in our community. On behalf of the Office of Student Life and the Freshman Dean’s Office, we offer our sincere apologies for this situation.

Academic freedom is central to all that Harvard College stands for. To suggest that there is only one point of view on each of these issues runs counter to our educational goals. We appreciate the feedback that we have received about this initiative. Moving forward we will, with your continued input, support the growth and the development of independent minds.

I personally witnessed something exactly like this in college, except my university swept it under the rug once the evidence was brought to light. There was a pretty egregious and violent racial slur written in sharpie on the wall of a bathroom on my floor of the dorm building. It set the whole campus off. Days of classes were were canceled, it was a national news story, the FBI got involved in the investigation. Naturally everyone assumed the perpetrator was a white male.

Word started going around that this black chick actually did it. She was a public figure on campus, active in a handful of organizations. A true loud mouth self righteous type. All of us who lived in the vicinity were getting grilled pretty hard by campus security, made to fill out multiply statements of our whereabouts that night, who we saw, etc. I was privileged to some intimate details of the investigation and can say that the chief of campus security was provided with pretty compelling circumstantial evidence against her.

She was seen at the scene of the crime in the time window they had narrowed down. AFTER she had lied about the details of her whereabouts in her written statement, she inadvertently corroborated this piece of information through a text conversation with the witness. This was all given to the investigators.

I don't know if that is enough to convict somebody, but being a white male I can only imagine the sort of scrutiny I would have faced had the same evidence been provided against me. I probably would have ended up doing time.

Shit still gets me worked up thinking about it. This bitch also cried rape on a kid, with whom she'd had many previous sexual encounters. He got escorted out of a class by police and immediately suspended and banned from campus, no questions asked. I heard the her account of the incident was scoffed at and quickly dismissed when presented in a court room.

This is all at one of the "elite" east coast liberal arts colleges with a long, historic tradition. I just happened to be there when it was all going to shit.

I became desensitized to seeing members of "marginalized" groups being allowed to run around and commit any manner of illicit, self-interested, and often destructive acts with complete impunity within the campus sphere. It is encouraging to see at least one occasion in which the offender is held accountable.

I hope they lock her the fuck up.

edit: If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, don't make the mistake of the witness in my account. Deal directly with the criminal investigators, not with university campus security.
