This thread is indeed looking like a great idea. I'm already getting more enjoyment out of the films I've seen. Instead of just watching on my own and then moving on from the movie as soon as it ends, I'm now reflecting on each film, giving me a much more satisfying experience and extended experience.

I watched Special Forces (2011) tonight. I won't drop any reviews or thoughts tonight. Quite frankly, I'm still processing what I just saw. This movie has some serious impact. At first I thought I was watching a Jason Bourne type of movie, but after the first 30-40 minutes the intensity ratcheted up far beyond that.

I'm not aware of any way to see movies outside of the normal channels like Netflix, Hulu, etc. If you can't find a movie, just pass on it, and make a note of it. It may turn up later or become available in some other venue at some point.

Actually I was looking to find a way for those of us that can get a particular film to share with those that can't. Between Amazon Prime, Netflix, and my local library there's probably not much I cant find/get.

For example: I just reserved a copy of Special Forces at the library. Once I get it I can upload it to my DropBox account. Then I can then share it with anyone else that has a DropBox account (they're free). ...Just an idea

Just finished watching "The Drop" last night.

For all the moderately surprising twists in the movie, the biggest revelation turns out to be no revelation at all. The movie proved just how good of an actor Tom Hardy really is. I thought Hardy’s skillfully restrained performance as a mild-mannered Brooklyn bartender with a Brooklyn accent who finds himself an unwitting pawn in all manner of crooked schemes isn’t just the film’s strongest element. Tom Hardy was perfect for this crime drama film. At first I thought Tom Hardy wasn't fit for these kind of movies but boy was I wrong.

Its a great thriller by all means. I love crime drama movies and this is one of the best I've seen in a long time.

Definitely recommended.

I notice 'The Drop' has stayed with me for a few days, which is always the sign of a good movie.

Thinking about it though, I think the original title - 'Animal Rescue' - would have been much more fitting for the themes of emotional wounding, protection and redemption.

This is a serious drama and character study. Highly recommended.

Reading the original short story, by Dennis Lehane, who wrote also the screenplay does shed light on his the themes he intended to explore

This is a story about a woman who suddenly loses her husband to death, and how she deals with the denial and repressed grief. It is a complex mental process, and full of forward and backward steps.

It is a mood piece, but a very effective one, and never boring. To describe it would to make it sound trite.

But anyone who has been visited by real tragedy (i.e., most of us) in his life will appreciate the subtle scenes in this film.

This is real acting, and this is a real story. See it if you can.

I appreciate the movie recommendation, Brother. It's on the list - even though I'm sure my fond childhood pre-sexual memories of Charlotte Rampling in my Dad's Playboy Collection are about to be ruined forever.

If anything, I wonder if I reflect too much, but it seems to be how I process experience to best draw wisdom from it.

The danger though: if it wasn't for women, I could easily withdraw completely from the world and be very happy within my own thoughts.

I suspect it's the Iron that keeps me grounded.

In other movie news, I finished watching 2011's "Special Forces".

It's a French action film about a special forces team in combat in Afghanistan.

This is a very well-done production. The action scenes are well-staged, the characters are believable and engaging, and the pacing is very fast.

A great action film, but not a deep message film. But that's OK. We all need a balance...

Watched an amazing movie a while back, but forgot the name. I found out today it was actually The drop. This movie was done in brilliant fashion. I always have an appreciation for movies that can display the grittiness of real life, but still function in the realm of sanity. This movie was well put together from beginning to end. The main character Bob's interactions with the crazy dog owner deeds was just fucking genius. One of the best scenes in the movie to me.

Next up Special Forces.

Libraries can be amazing. My local branch has about 5000 DVD's

Plus they recently they completed an expansion that includes a cafe'/coffee shop where there are all manner of nerdettes hanging on a daily basis.

Decent thread.

Iranian cinema is the most avant-garde cinema in the world right now. If any of you are familiar with the saying " The Italians under the Borgia's had terrorism, warfare and bloodshed but they produced Da Vinci and gave is the renaissance where as the Swiss had a 100 years of Brotherhood and Democracy and they gave us the cuckoo clock" you'd know what I was talking about.

There are very few societies undergoing the kind of Social transformation that Iran is undergoing and the economic transformation that India is undergoing. For that I recommend,

1) For a moment, Freedom. (Iranian)
2) Shaitan (Indian)

Yeah, I know I don't look the sort, but Libraries were always awesome to me - even if they're full of short-haired lesbians and I have to turn sideways to fit between the stacks.

As a young kid, I knew a trip there meant no cops would be hassling you; no-one would try to rob what little money you had; no-one would try to peer pressure you into stealing something or breaking something or fighting someone; no-one would ask you to run 'a package' somewhere; and no-one older would try to get you alone and then ask if you 'think about girls yet'?

As such, when I was a young child and was physically-outmatched by violent oppressors, I realised I could use the library to learn how to mentally-outmatch them.

Now I'm older: why not both?

As a bonus: a quiet child with a book is invisible, so no-one would care what you were reading as long as you were reading. Of course, I was drawn to the adult world - I find this Millennial Mindset of not wanting to race towards and embrace adulthood far before you're ready alien. Observation, threat assessment, the ability to blend into the background, influencing groupthink, female seduction - it was all there to be discovered.

Another great recent movie that I think a lot of guys here would like is Valhalla Rising (2009).

Starring the great Mads Mikkelson, this is a surreal story about an escaped slave ("One-Eye") who joins a group of Christianized Vikings headed for the New World.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, with his usual flair for style and mystical imagery. Here's a grisly clip.

Watched The Drop last night, great movie. I need to start paying attention as I never thought till the end that Tom Hardy's character killed a guy before, I am sure some of you guys at least suspected, I had no clue.

Tom Hardy is one of the few who exudes Masculinity, I like him a lot. Another great Tom Hardy movie is lawless with back drop in my neck of the woods.

Great movie indeed. Gets to you from minute one starting right away with the fight in the mud.
