It is also normal in Croatia. For example my mother wanted to apply for a X-Ray scan in the April and they told her she would have it in August. She went to a private doctor who had it and got done it there immediately.

I tell you something about the Single Payer System - all of European countries have similar systems - actually all Western countries have it except for the US.

It provides a cost-effective alternative for everyone - depending of course on wealth of the nation, budget of healthcare system etc.

EE countries have a low budget, but what they also have is a cheap private health care business. You can get basic private insurance for as low as 30$/month, which entitles you to a few private visits. Western countries depending on the country have a better public option and a luxury private option - Switzerland has the most private system, but it is still infused with the public offer as well.

If it is an accident or a life-threatening condition, then even the public option offer you the MR scan at once, if it is something else, then the waiting period from country to country may be months. But you can also walk down the street to a private clinic and have it done today for 100$ (or 2000$ if it is Switzerland, though your insurance will reimburse you).

And that is how it works - 15-20% of the top have excellent private care, while the other 80-85% get basic care that they can afford. Due to the fact that there is a single payer system, then the private providers have to lower prices.

If you had an Obamacare subsidized private system or a full-on private system without much of a real competition (Medicare and Medicaid are also subsidized private ones and not a competitive system) then I can guarantee you that the private ones in Europe would jack up their prices tremendously.

Something I've learned recently is that the public health care system in Europe has taken a dive since a few a years ago. Not exactly sure what is the cause and there is probably more than one, but constant budgeting has seen even high up Countries cut corners on medically trained personnel and ambulances...

This is what I always did when I was living in a Scandinavian country. Never used the public health care options.

The problem with Croatia is that as a small country (4 mil. people) we don't have any private hospitals. A dozen clinics yes, hundreds of offices and specialists sure, but not general hospitals. Even if they might exist as slightly smaller institutions, they get over-regulated out of existence. Thus, for serious or multidisciplinary illnesses you have to either deal with the murderous bureaucracy of the public health system or go to another country that has a big private hospital and spend a fortune on travel.

Note that 15.5% of our salaries go to fund this horrendous public health system and there's no way to opt out. Given the average gross salary of cca $1200, that means a payment of $178 per month (note: you'll still get charged small amounts for various services and medicines unless you purchase extra government insurance of $12/mo.). Even in the US, that amount of money could get you excellent private insurance, but here it just goes down the drain of a wasteful system that you'll rarely be able to benefit from.

Countries with high efficiency and low levels of corruption like Australia might make their single payer systems work very well, but the Reaper will come knocking for them too eventually. And the more illegal immigrants they take in, the sooner it's going to happen.

I agree, it is best to have both, however, you have to jump through some real hoops in Czech Republic to get both. You need to sign up with a private "club" and still have public health insurance to do so, then you need to pay them, then you need to pay the off duty public sector doctor, then that doctor will get you around waiting lines in the public hospitals. Rather corrupt practice really.

Why not just let the private sector do all non-acute scans, they do it far more efficiently.

If anyone needs to get a scan of any kind (MR, Ultrasound, CT), I strongly recommend https://www.affidea.hu/en/privat-kozpontok-arlista/ they're ridicously cheap and fast. 150EUR for a 1-bodypart MRI scan and that includes interpretation of results. It extremely cheap, you would have to go to India to get something similar.

I am sure you can get the same in Poland private hospitals. They're also very good value for money.

Public healthcare is good if you are employed and have some kind of sick-benefits, but if you're self employed and need shit done, then it is awful to wait months, when you could get everything done in a week privately.

Nah - Germans are highly valued. There is only some beef with the very old generations who experienced war and a few who are against anyone not Czech.

Except much of Czech is historically German, it's Bohemia, and Germans used to be the majority in Praha.
