According to author Jon Birger, you’re not imagining things. In “Date-onomics: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game,” out today, Birger, a former writer for Fortune and Money magazines, crunched demographic, census and other data to show that it really is historically rough out there for the ladies.

After noticing that his single gal pals were always complaining that “guys were ignoring them or were toying with them,” Birger decided to investigate. Based on his research, here are eight reasons why women can’t find a man — and strategies for increasing their odds.

You’re looking in Manhattan
The island is great for, say, watching a cheesy musical or spending $300 on a bottle of vodka. But for dating? Not so much. “Because women have been graduating from college in 30-plus percent greater numbers than men for years, there are now four women for every three men nationally in the marriage-age, college-educated dating market,” Birger says.
In Manhattan, the numbers are even more dire, with 38 percent more young female college grads than male. Birger says the imbalance is also exacerbated by New York’s large population of gay males. Some 9 to 12 percent of men in Manhattan are gay, according to Gary Gates, a demographics expert at UCLA’s Williams Institute.
Other cities especially brutal for single women are Houston; Providence, RI; and Raleigh, NC. Better options include Silicon Valley, San Francisco, San Diego and Columbus, Ohio. The Bay Area, for example, attracts programmers, computer scientists and engineers — fields that are disproportionately male.

You went to the wrong college

“There’s a lot of social science showing that men behave differently in different relationship markets,” Birger says.
When faced with an oversupply of women, guys are more likely to delay marriage and play the field. Or, in other words, to act like guys.

And as reported by numerous publications, dating is out with young people and hookup culture is in. No need to wine and dine a potential mate when you can just swipe right. With the gender imbalance on college campuses, men are having a field day, and they may see no need to end their winning streak by settling down.
For women, however, the longer a girl settles for casual sex as opposed to a long-term relationship, the more chance she has of ending up alone

You’re not issuing an ultimatum

“Ultimatums work in business and politics,” Birger says. “This notion that the only area of life you shouldn’t issue an ultimatum in is romance doesn’t make sense.”
Researcher John Molloy interviewed 3,000 couples right after they got their marriage licenses and found that 60 percent of the women were prepared to walk away if their guy suddenly declared he wasn’t ready.

You’re not making the first move

The aggressive women are the ones more likely to get the guy.
“I was talking about this with my rabbi, and he does premarital counseling,” Birger says. “Of the nine couples he had in counseling, seven of them shared a similar story: The guys all had several options, but they married the women who pursued them the most.”
And ladies, don’t worry about turning off guys by being too pushy.
“It’s a myth that men enjoy the chase,” Birger says.

You’re working in the wrong job

Slaving away in p.r., education, nursing, event planning or other female-dominant fields? Time to get a new job.
“Stanford sociologist Michael Rosenfeld reports that 10 percent of Americans meet their future spouses at work,” Birger says.
Some careers to consider: mechanical engineering (93 percent male), computer network administration (83 percent) and financial advising (74 percent).

You’re too religious

Consider dating a nonbeliever, even if it makes your grandma cry into her meat sauce.
“People who leave organized religion are disproportionately male,” Birger says. “Atheists and agnostics are also disproportionately male. An atheist meet-up would be a really good place to meet men.”

You’re too picky

“For the women who wait [to settle down], the dating pool gets much, much worse,” Birger says.
He likens it to a game of musical chairs. In the first round, fresh into the dating market, nearly every woman gets a chair. By the final round, the chances of losing soar to 50 percent.
For example, some 20 years ago a recent college-grad female confronted a dating market that had 117 recent college-grad men for every 100 women. Today that same woman, now 40, if still unmarried, faces a market in which nearly two-thirds of those formerly single men are hitched, and there are just 33 eligible men for every 50 women — 52 percent more women than men.
“None of this would matter if we were open-minded about who we dated,” Birger says. “The problem is, Americans — both men and women — have become more rigid about dating across socioeconomic boundaries.”
To find a mate, college-educated women should consider dating working-class men.
“In the future, we’re going to see more of what I call ‘mixed collar’ marriages,” Birger says.

Feminism has consequences.
They wanted government to force 'equality', so most college graduates are now women. Med schools, Law schools, Pharmarcy schools all have a mandate to admit 1/2 female classes even though the women end up working less hours.

-Regardless of the 'girl power' you teach them, women are NOT attracted to men below them (no college degree, lower paying job, physically weak, etc). They crave a boyfriend who will take charge, except they're too stupid to realize school and government have actively punished men into becoming passive towards women.

Many have become tinder / smart phone addicts men have realized it's not worth approaching them. I can't stand how assertive or even aggressive young women have become. It's annoying not attractive.

The grand irony of all is that these women have a limited window to even lock down a quality man. At 22 they are hotter than they will be at 25. At 28, the underwater sonic music is playing before the wall hits.

I will say though, 61% undergraduate females at NYU makes me wish I went there.

Edit: Void - I think most men with those types of wall street jobs work 80+ hours a week and a fair number of them probably lose the desire to party much.

As a NYC male, this shit concerns me I guess, so let me chime in with my 2 cents.

First off - the title of this thread is right - there is a shortage of "Alpha" men. And Women in this city live by the rule that I laid out on a blog post last year - (apologies for the self promotion, but this is relevant) - If you're a guy - you are either the shit, or you dont exist.

Invisible men are, by defacto, invisible.

Where are these "dating statisticians" when every single bar I go to, in every single neighborhood I go to, is always, without exception a sausage fest?

My conclusion is that either their data is fucked up and selective, OR, and I feel sorry to say this - the situation is worse everywhere else in the country. I had a friend from out of town be openly jealous of the sausagefest bar I took him to.

But hey, at least this article hints at personal responsibility, so it aint all bad.


EDIT: want to know why NYC dating is so frustrating? On the one hand - women post stuff like this, and it becomes a huge "why cant girls like us find love in the big city" circle jerk.
On the other hand - you get articles like this - Gay people complaining that there are too many straight women at gay bars.

The gender ratio of men:women is actually greater than it ever has been before. Women can easily find a man. The problem is that every girl thinks she deserves the best and wants to ignore the rest, so she acts cocky in front of the hordes of needy beta orbiters and cruelly shuns the omega male underclass. Most of these girls could find a guy easily if they stopped playing games and went with a guy who promised to "treat them right", but that's no fun.

Guys often will settle with any girl who gives them the opportunity, while women tend to want the best. As long as this continues to be true, women will continue their non-stop whining that there are "no good men" out there.

This strategy actually works. We had maybe 3-4 out of 300 tree planters per year show up for work that were hot, girly bitches that had no place to be picking up a bag and shovel. Within a week they'd have a guy locked down (management mostly) and coast through the season. There was one in particular that I remember, with fake tits that would wear a bikini top on hot days a work. We'd put her at the front section of the work site to distract inspectors and all you'd hear on the radio all day were log truck drivers making detours to see "the treeplanter with her tits out" and air horns blasting as they went by. It was hilarious.

Also, that NYC advice is all wrong. If a bitch really wants to get married she should not go to college, take that money and spend it on plastic surgery, a personal trainer and cooking classes. Its like they don't get it...If life was Gilligan's island men would be the Skipper, Gilligan and the Professor and are simply looking for a Marianne or Ginger. However, Women think that they should be selling themselves as the Professor or the Skipper...and then when they are old and hit the wall...Mrs. Howell...and Mrs. Howell would definitely have been the first one eaten if there was a coconut crop failure on the island.

That's one of the points the author is trying to make. Woman should be more open to blue collar workers and not obsess over cool titles like Dr, Judge, etc etc.

But I'm over 40 now and know a lot more about life. Back when I was meeting such women from ages 17-25, they really did scare me off.

And it's a shame too, because looking at their lives (and the way they look) now, these were the good ones. The problem wasn't what most people assume -- that I thought I wasn't going to get any action right away.

The problem was:

1). I felt the religion forced me to live in her reality. I like to share reality with women, not live completely in their world. I wasn't about to trade in my Beastie Boys CDs for Amy Grant.

2). It seemed like I was walking on eggshells with these women. The wrong joke or comment, I feared, would sent things flying apart. Having a sense of humor and irony is important, and a lot of these girls were overly earnest. SJWs now seem this way. Everything can't be about saving the world.

All of this makes me wonder if religion isn't a test some women use to vet men. One reason I wonder this is that a lot of the religious girls I knew back in the day didn't necessarily marry religious men like I thought they would. Oh well.

When I was in NYC last year, yes it was still sausage fest everywhere, technically, but there were always at least 3 or 4 girls at 7+. For me, the odds are low that there would be 3 or 4 guys with better Game in the same bar. If there are, I can go to the next bar, easily. I can live with that ratio.

Here in my home city, some places technically have more females than males, but there might be no 7+ or just the one girl, and immediately you're up against 5-6 well-dressed tall cool guys for her attention.

Sorry to say, we are indeed jealous of your NYC sausage fests!

You are assuming that the ratio of women looking for a man is the same as the women that go to bars/clubs. I don't think that is correct. Remember, when a woman wants to get laid, she now has all the tools she needs to have a Chad delivery (tinder, facebook, IG, etc). Any woman that's a 6 or better (and even a bit less) don't have the same interest in going out, spending money on taxis and maybe paying for a drink/entry when they don't have to. Basically many women are sharing the small group of Chads in their local area.

Since the majority of guys cannot get laid easily on social media, they go out looking for whomever is left over. This is why you see more groups of women going out for events (birthdays, celebrations, etc), and not looking for a guy to hook up with. That's already taken care of.

These same women still complain about the standard: Where are all the good men. What they are really saying is why won't Chad commit to me? But Chad is juggling 5 girls just like her in his soft harem.
