Isis Wenger, a platform engineer in San Francisco, got talked into being one of a handful of colleagues featured in a hastily organized recruiting campaign for her company OneLogin, she wrote on Medium.

The response shocked her. Friends forwarded her posts from complete strangers responding to the photo, and soon they didn’t need to send them — they were everywhere.

“… if you knew me you would probably know that being famous is one of my biggest nightmares; seriously right up there with falling into a porta potty,” she wrote.

Still, there was her image, triggering all this reaction — a lot of it negative. And a lot of it mirroring attitudes she often saw in the tech world, she wrote — from men who seemed like pretty smart and normal guys who didn’t know how uncomfortable their comments might make someone.

Like when male colleagues threw dollar bills at her in the office.

She ended the post with a challenge:

“Do you feel passionately about helping spread awareness about tech gender diversity?

“Do you not fit the ‘cookie-cutter mold’ of what people believe engineers ‘should look like?’

“If you answered yes to any of these questions, I invite you to help spread the word and help us redefine ‘what an engineer should look like’ #iLookLikeAnEngineer.”

And she posted a photo of herself with the hashtag.

It took off.

Soon there were #Ilooklikeanengineer tweets from women all over the world (and a few men) (and other creatures), tired of surprised looks when they meet a client for the first time, or arrive at an interview.

When she was in college at West Virginia University, Emily Calandrelli, who posted a photo of herself with that hashtag at Lick Observatory in California, was one of just two women in a big science class. “We definitely stood out.”

And when she meets new people, if her graduate education in aeronautics and astronautics, technology and policy comes up, she often hears, “Wow, you don’t look like you went to MIT!”

“They say it’s like it’s a compliment,” she said, “but it rubs me the wrong way. Being interested in science and engineering is not a male quality. This movement proves that’s not the case.”

She was surprised that so many people posted photos but said it was fun scrolling through seeing the incredible diversity of images and felt that, once the idea picked up momentum, “you wanted to be part of that community.”

Now the host and producer of FOX’s “Xploration Outer Space,” Calandrelli interviews experts in space exploration about their research. “A lot of times when I walk into those environments they make the assumption that I don’t have an understanding of science of space exploration – perhaps because I’m a woman, or how I present myself on camera, with makeup, hair, all that.” So she could immediately relate to Wenger’s experience.

When Calandrelli asked an engineer at a company developing a spacecraft about the type of propulsion they were using and the specific challenges they were having in its design, “the guy looked at me and said, ‘Did one of my guys tell you to ask that?’ ”

There could have been a few reasons why he was surprised, she said; maybe it was a hurdle they were facing that very day and he didn’t expect such a topical question. “In my head I was thinking, ‘If I were a big burly man, would you ask this?’

“ ‘Nope,’ she told him. ‘I came up with that question all by myself.’ ”

Well, first and foremost, I do believe to give credit where credit is due. I applaud these women for the fact that they are interested in and excelled in a STEM field. I also do understand the stereotyping involved when you have a good looking girl in a field like this, especially the case of Calandrelli asking an expert a question that he didn't believe she knew anything about.

But other than that, this is another case of women taking things too personally and turning a situation into a platform of attention whoring essentially. Instead of putting focus on their minds and proving the doubters wrong with their ideas and knowledge, they pretty much stooped back to focusing on gender and looks by posting a selfie with the hashtag #ilooklikeanengineer.

They can decry the sexism all they want, but I have a strong feeling Isis Wenger was probably hired not only because of her engineering knowledge (which I'm sure a handful of people also possess), but because she looked hot. But I don't see her complaining about equality then when she probably got hired over other equally, or even more qualified males (and not so good looking females) because of looks. And working in a male space is almost guaranteed to encounter forms of ball busting (something male colleagues do to each other for fun) and being joked with. If she wasn't comfortable with it, she could've just confronted them and said she didn't appreciate the gesture. But i guess her using this as a platform for seeking attention and humble bragging is better than her pressing harassment charges on her male colleagues, so I guess there's your silver lining.

And if you don't want to surprise clients that you don't look like an engineer, then dress for the part. I'm pretty sure, if you dressed professionally, first impression wise, a client of interviewer will treat you more serious, and you just let your knowledge and smarts shine.

If she weren't a decent package of AssTitsFace, no one would give a shit as to what extent she looks like an engineer or not. No one would give a shit about her existence, period.

Stereotypes are but probabilistic truths. Girls tend not to be in engineering because they tend to find it boring relative to alternatives, especially pretty girls--who tend to have more options in life beyond doing boring, dorky shit like engineering. The narrower female cognitive variance is also a large factor, if not larger.

As Daniel Tosh remarked, being an ugly girl is like being a man--you're going to have to work.

I'm not going to hold my breath for the day Wenger protests insurance companies for stereotyping old people as dying sooner than young people.

Is anyone else annoyed that computer people are calling themselves engineers? When I think engineer I think people who design car engines, bridges, etc. I know "computer engineering" is technically a thing but people who "build websites" being considered engineers leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The development process behind designing a factory, and a complicated piece of software e.g some large scale video processing software, software for a fighter jet isnt that different, the tools used are different, but the methodology is quite close

For the record have a chemical engineering degree, and im a software developer

There's a couple of em out there, but you wouldn't know it because the (very) few that are worth a damn tend to be pretty introverted. They care entirely about their projects or their academic passion and rarely give a shit about popularity or socializing.

On a sidenote most of the female science types I've known who were actually into it weren't sloots. They were very asexual. One of my female friends I'm pretty sure has never had any interest in dating or sex....I've never seen her show any interest in guys sexually nor have I ever seen her with men.

Yes. There was a time apparently before I was born when much of what was done on computers was engineering, but now... in a world where Windows has always sucked, OS X is really starting to suck, and Linux is taking a long walk down the suck train... I find myself looking on Ebay for antiques like PDP-11's and DEC Alphas and thinking "Someday I might pull the trigger and make this my everyday machine."

I mean I have a smartphone. It's a fun toy. Just when it comes to having a computer and wanting something that works as advertised it is very hard to find anything new.

All I ask is that when I visit my computer it gets my shit done while obeying myself completely as its owner. If it is a reasonable demand of my lawnmower or toaster it ought to be reasonable to ask this of the computer.

I think the problem is a lot of the HarvYaleStonFord legacy set is unemployable and the alumni network is merit washing their snowflakes to the detriment of civilized society. These kids get to enjoy the trapping of success so long as their family has bought in to the club where all the alumini families blow money on each of their kid's self esteem and occasionally they hook a celebrity's money to lessen their shame. It is some serious end of the empire armor and weapons are too heavy for Legionaries shit.

It's a fine line between the two. Computer "engineering" focuses more on the design of computer systems. As such they need to have a familiarity with programming and with MATLAB in particular but it's not their primary focus.

People tend to confuse the two because engineers can program the needed software-hardware interfaces. That doesn't make them "software engineers" or coders and it doesn't make coders computer engineers.

Basically computer engineers can do the coder's job, but probably not as well while coder's can't do the computer engineer's job.

As a person who has operated a couple website which have dealt with this what usually happens isn't logging in at all. The attacker will usually just piss a bunch of UDP packets at you. Most often they get the packets by finding a bunch of malconfigured routers and "Internet of Things" bullshit they can count on to both conceal them and leverage their own bandwidth up to 20+X depending on how shitty the router is.

The difference between a kid hitting F5 and a kid who knows what they are doing has never been greater due to all of this shitware.
