I think they are/were lining Renner up to take over the role when Cruise steps down. Problem is that Cruise doesn't age so that guy will be long dead while Tom is still doing his own stunts at 120 yrs old in Mission Impossible 12. The person who will take over this role still has another ten years before they are even born.

In that case I'll never get the role then.

Isn't there 5 MI films already? I have a lot of catching up to do before I watch this new one.

You don't need to see the first 4 to enjoy the 5th.

The opening of the movie does enough to fill you in on what you need to know to just enjoy it. Just don't expect Shakespeare.
