RE: Modern Male Criticizes Boxing Film for being Too Macho
It is clear that this guy is a low-testosterone male and the fact that another man can be respected for being tough, brutal and aggressive bothers him deeply. He feels being witty and clever and having the manly occupation of an internet gossip should entitle him to adulation of both men and women. Its the male version of fat acceptance. Just like telling woman its ok to be fat and un-feminine, he is trying to tell young men that this type of masculine display is repulsive, gauche and cliched. His agenda is to replace the actual definition of masculinity with a modern SJW version. Women and omegas will applaud and get on board.
Their slogan will be: "I dont have to be manly to be a man!"

It's funny because these masculine men he hates so much are the people who made it and continue to make society so fucking safe that a "man" like this can live to be 90 without ever having to do anything remotely masculine.

I'll probably go see the movie sometime today. I heard the lead role was originally meant to be played by Eminem.

RE: Modern Male Criticizes Boxing Film for being Too Macho
This must be the week where liberal men decided to be ashamed of their masculinity.

Over at Slate, writer Jacob Brogan thinks barbecuing is a sin because it makes him feel too traditionally masculine. It also doesn't feel "inclusive" enough. This is not satire.

Rather than link to Slate, I'll link to Charlotte Allen's blog, where I discovered this gem. Charlotte writes for the Independent Women's Forum. They're a group who are pretty traditionally female...yet still far more masculine than this writer:

“I’m uncomfortable with the pleasure I take in something so conventionally masculine. Looming over the coals, tongs in hand, I feel estranged from myself, recast in the role of suburban dad. At such moments, I get the sense that I’ve fallen into a societal trap, one that reaffirms gender roles I’ve spent years trying to undo. The whole business feels retrograde, a relic of some earlier, less inclusive era….

“On the one hand, there’s the peculiar alchemy of sun and smoke that makes summer days sprawl. On the other hand, it bears the stain of unintentional masculine cliché. Gathered around the coals with beers slung low, we’re all but enacting a myth of the American man, telling a story in postures and poses. No longer mere Ph.D. students, we have become bros.”…

RE: Modern Male Criticizes Boxing Film for being Too Macho
It's interesting to contrast his review with that of award winning critic, Wesley Morris, one of my favorite writers. It goes to show that these Gawker guys just aren't good at their jobs. Grierson's whole review can't get past his own feelings of not being able to live up to the level of masculinity in the film. He literally cannot talk about any aspect of the movie without that being a factor. Morris on the other hand can actually explain what he doesn't like about the movie in a way that makes sense. The word "masculinity" or "macho" isn't used once.

Quote:Sometimes you want to see an actor leave everything on the floor. We’re sadists that way, we moviegoers. But when the acting is as masochistic as Jake Gyllenhaal’s is in Southpaw, you wish he’d keep a little something for himself. He plays a Hell’s Kitchen light heavyweight champ, and whenever he opens his mouth, you half-expect one of the DJs from Hot 97 to blast an air horn. (That accent is where somebody thinks hip-hop lives.) Gyllenhaal has made himself intimidatingly fit. The muscles on his fatless body ripple. The veins and striations form an interstate coursing with God only knows. His big eyes go Powerball crazy.

Definition of a "twig"- A male whose shoulder width is less than or equal to twice the width of his head.
i.e.
FFS, go do some assisted pull ups, you twig.

Just for fun, try holding a mug like that, then put it down and hold the fingers entwined pose. I just did it and I feel pretty gay.

As soon as he unfolds his hands his wrist goes limp. If the picture is any indication he speaks with a lisp. Definitely a "bottom."

RE: Modern Male Criticizes Boxing Film for being Too Macho
I used to believe this sort of shit is parody, but sadly I've run into these faggots in real life. One showed up at my powerlifting club recently for form check, then left complaining that we're "too aggressive". Before that, a SJW-type vegan couple came to our club for the free session then complained there's too much "testosterone poisoning".

I'm still not quite sure what possessed them to go to a powerlifting club in the first place and expect anything less.

I'm sure his nuanced, modern masculinity will be a great comfort to him when his girlfriend is sucking Chad's dick.

RE: Modern Male Criticizes Boxing Film for being Too Macho
With all seriousness, a lot of these types who dominate the media are really fighting against nature. You can campaign against 'beauty standards' for women and 'toxic masculinity'. But these are natural conditions of being human. Essentially these types are afraid of masculinity and femininity, anything which seems wild and outside of their comfort zones; they perceive as threatening.
I don't have a problem with the SJW types if they keep their ideas and theories to themselves. Its only when they start pushing these messages through schools and in the media, that I start to get concerned.

Telling a boy growing up that he must be kind, sensitive and considerate and telling him to denounce any trait of strength, assertiveness and being discriminatory, Is setting up the kid for disaster. Masculinity and femininity, sex etc is only restricted to the bedroom nowadays and hence why sex is becoming more deviant and extreme. Sexuality is a key component of creation and life in general.

A very masculine man will attract a very feminine woman and this can be seen in wider society.

Is it just me or does Gylenhaal fight out of an orthodox stance in all the action scenes in the trailer? Why would they call the movie Southpaw when the lead character fights from a right-handed stance not a left-handed southpaw stance?

I saw the movie and was thinking the same thing. I didn't notice him fighting in a southpaw stance at all. The lead role was originally meant for Eminem and the theme was supposed to be similar to that of 8 mile, comparing a southpaw boxer to a white rapper. Eminem has some, or maybe more than some, boxing training. He trained under Emanuel Steward for a while.
