Wow. Spot on. Every fat person, especially with fat children, needs to watch this. A justified reality check.

The saddest thing is the kids. I could give a shit less if some loser eats him self an early death, but to influence your children that way is criminal. I thank god everyday that I had parents that fed me healthy meals and got me active in sports.

RE: Fitness Instructor John Burk Goes In Hard On Fat People and Fat Acceptance
I'm sorry, but I've got a dissenting opinion on this. Two points.

I read an article in the New York Times that absolutely changed my perspective on this. It was called “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” and it basically went in-depth on the incredible lengths that companies like General Mills, Nabisco and Coca-Cola go through to make the perfect product. They have scientists and psychologists working together for the sole purpose of creating food that is (basically) addictive.

Quote:“This contradiction is known as “sensory-specific satiety.” In lay terms, it is the tendency for big, distinct flavors to overwhelm the brain, which responds by depressing your desire to have more. Sensory-specific satiety also became a guiding principle for the processed-food industry. The biggest hits — be they Coca-Cola or Doritos — owe their success to complex formulas that pique the taste buds enough to be alluring but don’t have a distinct, overriding single flavor that tells the brain to stop eating.”

Coming away from reading that article, it’s awful hard for me to put the onus of obesity on 68.8% of Americans lacking “self-control” and being “lazy”. The children of today are raised by the parents of yesterday who grew up eating processed foods designed to be addictive.

Quote:“As a culture, we’ve become upset by the tobacco companies advertising to children, but we sit idly by while the food companies do the very same thing. And we could make a claim that the toll taken on the public health by a poor diet rivals that taken by tobacco.”

Huh. Let’s look at tobacco, smoking specifically. Neither by “shaming” (alone) nor encouraging people that lungs are healthy no matter how tar-covered they are would’ve been conducive to getting people to stop being addicted to it. It took the government stepping in, not allowing tobacco companies to market to children (or have ads at all) and taxing the fuck out of it. I wouldn’t dare ignore the shaming of smokers that happened on a national macro and micro level, but it worked in concert with the governmental push.

So to my second point.

What exactly does this shit do? At the very least, concede that companies made a conscious effort to make foods they knew were bad for human beings more addicting. In order to make money. That, to me, is evil. For me, I can't stand this "GOT EM" schtick, where it's no longer about finding rational solutions that benefit both sides, but about TOTALLY BUSTING the opposition by making them look stupid. I’m fucking sick of everyone only caring about winning arguments. I really don’t care to see another argument where some MRA totally crushes a feminist on FOX News. I’d rather see two people try to come up with actionable ideas to affect real change. But that doesn’t get ratings. Or views. What does is jacked guys without shirts on yelling at fat people to stop being lazy and have self-control. Or fat girls whining about how life is unfair. Split the country and pick a side.

Ultimately, (and I'm going very macro here) this is the downside of capitalism (in my opinion, the only truly viable economic system). I am sure someone will say “well should companies not make money because these people can’t CONTROL THEMSELVES?”. I can’t argue with that. At the end of the day, it’s all about the almighty dollar, and getting it into your bank account. At any cost.

I haven’t heard anyone roast on Nabisco or Kraft for contributing to the imbalance in the sexual marketplace. Their products effectively removed a significant portion of the female dating pool from contention, thereby inflating the value of the ones unaffected. We can say feminism is the sole problem, but I’ll leave this here.

You're 100% right and a quick google searching will have you find multiple articles with similar insights to the one you posted. Obesity and food addiction is a disease whether or people on the forum admit it or not.

HOWEVER - HOWEVER - HOWEVER
The problem starts when people claim "there is no problem - accept me for who I am". These are not people looking for a solution, nor are they willing to have some self-awareness about themselves. We don't 'accept' the way of life of a drug addict, we get them to seek help. And much like 'recreational' drugs from time-to-time, it's ok to have a slice of pizza every once in a while. But if pizza and cookies are all that you consume- and you don't see any issue with that - THAT'S a problem.

I have been scrolling over this video on Facebook. for some reason I thought it was about the Confederate flag (thats what everything seems to be about these days)

I agree 100% with guy ESPECIALLY about fat kids... Lazy fat fucking parents with fat kids disgust me more than pretty much anything and played a huge role on my decision to get the fuck out of America... I was from small town anyway and eveyr where I looked it was fat rednecks in camouflage looking like Honey Fucking Boo Boo. An when you did socialize with them or just over hear them talking, it was always the same thing. They talked about what kinds of medications they were on, how much they hated their jobs, and reality TV. I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. It was enough for me to fucking jump ship and I never plan on returning...

For the record I did move to a bigger cooler city on the East cost for a year and it was better then the small town, but certainly not perfect by any stretch.

Fat people exist for several reasons. What pisses most people off is the entitlement complex being fed by those in power. Bigger ambulances, growing demand for powerlifter type male nurses, larger hospital beds to take someone who weighs in excess of 400lbs.

Making insurance premiums go up and tax increases likely is what annoys people. I couldn't give a shit about these lard buckets moping around eating shit, its when they demand things and get them which is what gets on my nerves.

Stop empowering these sad sacks of shite and the behaviour will diminish.

Good observation, at my gym the only time I see gigantic fat people they are men and when I see a really fat guy hauling himself up the stairs to get on a treadmill I want to run over and give him a high five because he is actually doing something about his condition.

Do I ever see morbidly obese women? no. chubby sure, but not butter bean huge.

Candy Corn Oreos? Yuck! I hate those candy corns and Nabisco actually made Oreos that taste like them? Well, the fat girl in the picture need not worry about me eating any of her stash.

He makes really good points. A healthy kid is not going to come from unhealthy parents, that includes mental health as well. I haven't seen many people talk about the fact that child abuse of any sort increases all these tendencies for over eating. More so than a thyroid condition can because there are more people who come from bad childhoods, than bad health in the first world.

I used to be a fatty myself so I can relate to other fat people. Most of the time you're eating junk food and not moving much. You go on horrible yoyo diets that crash and then binge back up to the former weight with less energy to change than before.

It's mostly mental as far as I can tell, seeing a good therapist would be better than seeing a personal trainer because there is already so much information out there about how to eat well and exercise. Everyone knows what not to eat. I wouldn't call obesity a disease but I would call it a mental health disorder just like OCD.

The documentary "Fed Up" explores this in depth, including the history and politics of it all.

I'll agree with you guys that I think what food companies do to produce the most tasty & addictive foods is insidious, but what is there as a recourse on the social scale? You can't tell a company, "Your food tastes too good, you need to make it taste worse." That is absurd and impossible.

Fat people are still to blame for their own fatness. The simple solution to being faced with foods engineered to make you crave them is not to buy them. You can eat a pound of vegetables or you can have two oreo cookies. Wonder which one will actually provide long term satiety and good nutrition?

The post by dads up thread would indicate people would be less addicted to these foods if the foods tasted better. Junk foods are made for a kid's underdeveloped taste buds, and the average adult still has a child's tastes because of the diet people in the west have lived on since at least WWII. A majority of Americans still hate vegetables because they do not have a clue how to cook beyond boiling all the flavor and nutrition out.

These eating habits start in childhood and few adults in modern society have the willpower to change their habits. Fat people associate these junk foods with happiness. Kids with underdeveloped taste buds are more prone to love the simpler but satisfying flavors. As they grow up and get fat, junk food turns into one of their only sources of pleasure. People generally lack a long-term mindset and cannot deal with the delayed gratification of eating healthy when they have no other sources of immediate pleasure. The average fat person could 100% agree with your comparison of vegetables to oreos and still choose the oreos, because they're making that decision based on emotion.

I would agree with the people who have said junk food should be treated like tobacco. Fat people absolutely should be responsible for their own choices, but the average person's weak mind should not be subject to so much temptation through high availability and advertising.

Actually, you can. Tell me why what happened with Tobacco can't happen with processed food.

Which is mostly due to the fact that calories burnt from exercise (especially regarding obese people) are paltry. They can spend a year and make little progress. Diet is really the most important aspect in losing weight. Even if the obese person has extreme commitment, the result from exercise will be minimal concerning fat loss. Its just not possible for most people to burn the calories required.

This is a great write up about it:

Body Recomposition
Quote:generally speaking, the only people who can burn a tremendous number of calories during exercise are trained athletes; and they aren’t the ones that usually need it.
...
most untrained folks can burn perhaps 5-10 cal/minute in exercise if you’re talking about sustainable intensities; this might hit 15 cal/minute but that would be for high intensity interval-type training.

However, the duration of that activity tends to be exceedingly limited and the total average calorie burn for the activity will be lower due to the rest intervals. As well, this isn’t an intensity of training that can be done frequently. Even achieving 10 cal/minute would be fairly challenging for an relatively untrained/low-trained individual.

let’s look at realistically what we might expect in terms of weight loss using the values for a typical untrained/low fitness level individual assuming a calorie burn of 5-10 cal/minute and various durations and frequencies. I’m going to compare 30 vs. 60 minutes and 3 vs. 6 days/week to estimate total caloric expenditure.

to put in this in real world terms I’m going to move from weight loss to fat loss with the assumed value of a 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound of fat; of course this assumes that 100% fat is being lost which is not always a safe assumption.

Frankly, the results are pretty dismal; you don’t even get to a one pound fat loss per week until you reach 6 days/week of an hour of fairly challenging exercise every day.

And this is simple mathematics, removing 1000 calories/day from the diet can be achieved with relatively more or less ease (depending on how bad the diet is to start with) when compared to exercise; the average beginner simply can’t burn that many calories with any realistic amount of exercise. At a low intensity and a calorie burn of 5 cal/min, that would require 200 minutes of activity per day, over 3 hours. At a challenging 10 cal/min, you’re looking at 100 minutes, an hour and forty minutes. This is simply beyond what most people can, are willing, or have time to do.

But the simple fact is that, for the average untrained individual, realistic amounts of activity are unlikely to have massive direct impacts on either body weight or body fat; the caloric expenditure simply isn’t significant enough to impact on anything. As well, changes in diet have the potential to make a much greater contribution to the creation of a caloric deficit; removing 500 or even 1000 calories per day from the diet can usually be achieved much more readily than adding the same amount of activity.

TL;DR Putting obese people in gyms will do nothing towards losing weight. Its all about diet.
