When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
A recent thread search by an esteemed member helped me realize that there are often as many, or more, references to women as "females". This is something the feminists started years ago, so girls wouldn't be called...well, GIRLS. In their typical joyless, soulless way, they refer to men as "males" and women as "females".

To me, women are girls until they are women, and women until they are old ladies. While in the "women" stage, I'll refer to them as such, unless they give evidence that they are better described by "bitch", "slut", or even "cunt". But I try to use those sparingly.

But "females"? Very clinical.

The weirdest perversion of language I've seen coming out of the SJW camp is the term 'self-lubricate'.

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
I thought I read the opposite actually on RVF....that feminists/SJWs are now mad about the term "females" because of it's relation to male/female binary with animals. They prefer to be called women apparently.

But I don't really give any of this much thought, soon enough they'll be offended by something else, and the list of "words that hurt" will start to resemble a dictionary in itself.

The great thing about not being a feminist, is that, in the broader context of things (ie; in general, non specific conversation) use of certain synonyms over another doesn't necessarily hinder the actual communication of an idea being presented. Rather than nitpicking over whether that misspelling was a Freudian slip and the person writing has gay/incest/homoerotic tendencies and is a crazed murderous rapist, most men can simply gather that female/girl/women all refer to the exact same thing in that context and move on to dealing with the actual issue being discussed.

For what it's worth here's an example;

I'll define female as the set of humans that have vaginas & ovaries, and don't have penises or testicles. Next we define a girl as part of the subset of females that aren't yet developed to physical maturity, and a woman is a female whose body has developed to maturation.

Clearly, in theory, the issue of what constitutes "developed" in a female isn't so well defined here, and could potentially lead to confusion. In practice, we are able to completely ignore the unimportant details that only serve to distract, and focus on the real question at hand: WYB?

I don't see the problem with calling women, females. Or girls, or chicks or babes. And in certain contexts each of those words will fit better than another.

But most of the time female and woman can be used interchangeably. Yes, the word "female" is more cold and clinical but this is not a feminist/SJW issue.

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
Female is a handy word when you want to refer to non-male babies, girls, women and old ladies as one group.

Also, since the term woman typically seems to impart some level of status to individuals who may not deserve it, using female is useful in helping to avoid bestowing respect on those who haven't earned any right to such recognition.

A small thing, but I certain don't see the harm in using female in place of woman when generically discussing individuals who've had 2 X-chromosomes bestowed upon their DNA.

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
As a writer and someone who values language, I like having multiple words to describe the same thing in different scenarios. The word has its time and place (especially when deadpanned around women in a sarcastic manner). I see no reason to cease this "faggotry."

I'm very skeptical about getting too caught up in sensivity of language the way the PC crowd has. Generally if someone uses a term that rubs you wrong, you're not thinking of the term in quite the same way. In other words, maybe you don't quite "get it" or aren't part of that subculture that uses it.

And even if you do get it and just don't like it, well, there's no sense in letting it get to you. We're all going to be offended or annoyed sometimes, especially as we age and the world changes without us, and that's just life.

Language is powerful but it's also very nuanced and dynamic, and I think people miss that when they get hung up on particular words or phrases and insist others refrain from using them. As an example, I often notice people investing way too much emotional energy in a new hip word or phrase that has been overdone and spend way too much time ridiculing others who use it, presumedly because they think that using that word says something specific about those people or that they're trying too hard to "fit in."

But maybe the truth is the person getting bitter is trying too hard to be original.

If you took a hard look at the American English vocabulary (or any other vocabulary), you'd find it riddled with words that once made no sense, that once became cool, that once became overdone, and that eventually just became a part of everyday language that no one thought about. Fighting that is just an unproductive use of mental and emotional energy - kind of like walking out into the surf and trying to use your body to stop the waves from coming in.

Language, much like fashion and musical taste, evolves and there's not a lot that can be done to stop it or slow it down. Smoke a joint, drink a beer, meditate, let it slide. All will be well.

Hey, the majority of females nowadays do not deserve to be called woman. They are better called the female of the human species.

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
When I was a kid, I saw a cardboard contest box in a donut shop — the kind with entry forms and an attached pen. Someone had written on the box, in flowing cursive handwriting: "Call me - 555-1212." Then, likely as an afterthought: "I am a female."

Someone wrote underneath: "A female what?"

Interesting point. It's true that some words have fallen in, and out, of favor, or had their usage change. Gay, for example, did once mean "happy". The "gay 90's" didn't refer to a bunch of faggots sucking each other off in the years in public following 1889; apparently that decade was a peaceful, happy one. You'd never describe an upbeat person now as "gay", though the opposite has happened: I've seen gays use "happy" as code for gay, e.g., I saw one gay guy ask a guy he met on an airplane, when the topic turned to dating, "are you happy?" And the other replied. "Oh, yeah - I'm happy!". In the context they were conversing, they clearly were referring to sexuality. Then they both disappeared together for about 15 minutes. Gay Mile High Club? There ain't that many places you can disappear to on a flight! I doubt First Class decided they wanted to host a couple of faggots for a portion of the trip :/

While I'm sure that much of that is innocuous, bear in mind that SJW's are extremely agenda driven, and that they are essentially totalitarians. Both the fascists and, more recently, the soviet communists, altered language to achieve their aims. As a boy, I never ONCE heard anyone from the greatest generation or the boomer generation use the word "female" in regards to a human. The greatest generation referred to themselves as "girls" without an afterthought - they wanted to be perceived as young. And everyone seemed to recognize that women were....well, girlish - unable to sustain much logical thought or responsibility - well into middle age.

It's only in the last 10 years I started hearing "female" in reference to women, and almost entirely by feminists. Hence, I wince. Sluttiness aside, what trend have feminists advanced that has ever benefitted a mal- I mean, a man?

As a famous political pundit used to say, "words mean things". Certainly Orwell realized this, and the totalitarian's aggressive manipulation of words, as expressed in Animal Farm, 1984, etc. That's why many became concerned years ago when the left went down this path, they even hired a consultant named George Lakoff to help "shift" the usage of language to one that would help empower them. Yeah, I know. Lakoff. Rhymes with...

I think this came out of the black community. I don't know why some black men refer to women as females, but googling "why do black men call women females" yields enough results to confirm that it's a real phenomenon. Anyone know why?

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
Thanks to the OP for bringing this up. I may have been using that word inadvertently. The cause may not be feminism, but rather the low quality of English language instruction in schools - grammar and basic foundations of the language fell out of fashion sometime in the '80s.

However, there is a feminist agenda in this area: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Womyn
In summary: they don't like the word "woman" because it ends in "man". Their solution is to change the spelling to "womyn".

Also, I don't agree that shifting language should be accepted without pushing back. Soon the question of what to call a faggot's spouse will have to be dealt with. No doubt they will want to use the word "husband". Should it be accepted? I personally will never use the word "husband" to refer to a faggot's partner.

I agree with this. Watch any of the excellent late 80s/early 90s hood films and you will rarely hear men say "women" or even "girls". It is almost always something abjectly derogatory or "females".

LOL. Absolutely, they will want the word "husband" to be used.

I forget about the whole "woman ends in man" nonsense. This reminds me: The funniest parody site that ever lived was called "feministing.org". It parodied "feministing.com". I was asked to write for it once, and I turned them down. It was during a very dark time in my life, during my divorce. But I've always regretted not supporting the site more; it eventually went out. But they SKEWERED those dumb cunts ceaselessly! For one thing, they mocked the "feministing" logo, which was itself intended to mock the trucker mudflaps with their silhouette of a sexy woman. In the "feministing.com" version, the sexy woman was giving the world the finger. But in the parody site, the woman's arm was inverted, and her middle finger was diddling herself. It was priceless.

Anyway, another way they mocked Amanda Marcotte, the founder of feministing.com, was to refer to her as "Amynda". "My name, like my body, can't have a MAN in it" the caricature would shriek.

To this day, it was the funniest parody site ever. I may create a separate thread about it later, seeking to know if anyone else remembers this magnificent piece of work!

RE: When did we start referring to human women as "females"?
While my feelings on the topic may not be quite as strong as The Father's, I tend to agree. I find no natural place for the word female in my own lexicon.

-- When referring to that half of humanity collectively, I prefer the weaker vessel or the distaff.
-- Seriously though, from Sinatra and my old man I've picked up and widely use the term broad, in contexts where the object has done something stupid, unsavory, or ill-advised -- i.e., most of the time. Ex. "That Toyota executive who tried to smuggle opioids into Japan? What a dumb broad." "Look at this gaggle of goofy broads at the end of the bar."
-- From the Forum's own Moma I've been infected by the great slang word lizard and I've been using it quite a lot---especially when the lizard is the target of my game. Back in the 80s the fixed phrase "lounge lizards" enjoyed great currency; is this a rebirth of that usage?
-- To my mind, far too many men (not necessarily here on the Forum) use the word girl to refer to women long past the time when it is appropriate. Once a genuine girl passes a certain age (maybe 20?) or has been fucked a certain number of times (maybe 20?), she's no longer a girl: She's just a bitch, broad, or lizard.
-- For younger women who are on the right side of the WB line, I like the word chick. Ex. "Where the fuck are all the chicks tonight?" I also often use chica, but that has a more narrow meaning in Spanish. My British mates still use bird in this sense.
-- For a hot piece of ass, I truly love the Italian slang figa (for "fig," i.e. the vagina). Che pezzo di figa! Lately I've been using this even in English: "Check out this little fig..."
-- As for the definition of woman, Somerset Maugham FTW:
Gentlemen, woman is an animal that micturates once a day, defecates once a week, menstruates once a month, parturiates once a year, and copulates whenever she has the opportunity.

I'd guess it's because female doesn't usually refer to humans. It's a more polite way of saying bitch.

Being clinical can also mean being aloof, or disdainful.
When feminists say "male," that is exactly what they are trying to be.

It has (along with male of course) always struck me as a very strange word to use about humans in casual conversation - and it's not that long ago since it gained more common use around the internet, is it?
Sounds out of place to me (though I almost exclusively see it in writing since I'm rarely around native English speakers) unless you're discussing biology or medicine or some other academic topic where the word might be relevant.

If a particular human female isn't worthy of the term woman or girl, then just call her a bitch or a psycho or a retard or whatever label is appropriate.

Also comes from the military. All official reporting uses the terminology "male" or "female". For example the women sleep in "female barracks" or you have "female shower times", so over time that tricked down into conversion2.
