RE: Post-hardcore/Screamo
I see your point roberto, but how many songs posted in this thread thus far would you consider "emo crybaby music"? I started the thread to share music with people who share a taste of the post-hardcore genre. I disagree that most have been promoting feminism/liberalism/wearing makeup. Hell, with the way mainstream music is going, I would consider many post-hardcore bands to be the few who actually write meaningful lyrics compared to their contemporaries. I posted multiple examples above.

It's obvious that people do not bother reading the thread then jump in hating whenever it hops onto the first page. It's also clear multiple posters haven't bothered listening to any of the songs before adding their opinions.

Nearly every song on the radio is about fucking nowadays. In this genre you have bands who sing about faith (Underoath, Memphis May Fire), atheism (The Amity Affliction, Our Last Night), the trials of becoming a man and overcoming adversity (We Came as Romans, Bring Me The Horizon, Falling in Reverse), the current cultural decay (Crown the Empire), and many other topics. Yeah, some songs are about a girl but you can't get away from that no matter what type of music you listen to. I don't see the disconnect or teenage angst in any song thus far in this thread.

I don't have any piercings or visible tattoos. No one knows I listen to post-hardcore from my appearance. It doesn't affect my masculinity at all. If anything, its refreshing to listen to well written lyrics that mean something over the god awful music mainstream society listens to.

My only error is including the word "screamo". As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I probably should have titled the thread Post-Hardcore/Metalcore.

RE: Post-hardcore/Screamo
wi30 - you're right, my reply wasn't respectful to forum members and somewhat hyperbolic. It's just my opinion that this genre and what it represents goes against the spirit of the forum. Kudos for you for not being influenced to follow the post-hardcore crowd/culture, and for just enjoying the music.

But my opinion is not based in ignorance. Growing up, there was no such thing in my neighborhood as SJWs or hipsters. We had the emo and metalcore crowd. And if you think it doesn't influence anti-masculine behavior, you haven't seen some of the shit I've seen. So many completely normal guys I knew growing up got into this music and crowd, and changed overnight - buying girl pants (again, I shit you not I saw this happen countless times), and posting every day on social media about how they were so depressed because of their girlfriend/breakup and were going to cut themselves, etc.

We all had tough breakups, but if I started saying some shit like that, my crew would slap sense into me. At the time it seemed harsh, but now I know why.

Music has a strong influence on our emotions and thinking. We are hard wired this way. No matter who you are, an E minor chord sounds sad and a G major sounds happy. Music is a part of our culture, and thus our values and beliefs. I'm not immune to guilty pleasures as far as music is concerned, but part of self-discipline is minimizing that exposure.

Honestly it's hard for me to get through even a minute of any of the songs you posted, so I admit I have bias. It just hurts me on an intrinsic level. And I'm down with a lot of genres, including rock, jazz, techno, rap, classical, etc.

RE: Post-hardcore/Screamo
Fair enough AFS, I appreciate the honest and thoughtful response. I grew up as a jock/prep in high school and we would blast a combination of post-hardcore and gangster rap in the locker room before games. We had a small goth/emo crowd in my town but nobody paid any attention to them. Sorry to hear you lost some buddies to mascara. I played in a punk rock band that covered blink 182 and the Foo Fighters. We played some local shows and wrote some originals too. My love for punk rock eventually transformed into post-hardcore by listening to Silverstein, Chiodos, and Alexisonfire. We used to go to Warped Tour in the summer to see our favorite bands play live. I've never owned skinny jeans or a band tee. If anything, me and my buddies looked out of place in netted shorts and Adidas shirts.

As a metal artist, what do you consider metal? Serious question. Some people consider Metallica and Black Sabbath metal. I like both bands and that style of music. However I could never get into the Slayer or Lamb of God type metal. It simply doesn't appeal to me.

This sentence has really been bugging me for the past hour. I was at the park playing fetch with my dog and I couldn't get this comment out of my mind. Is it a musician's responsibility to be the "voice of a generation"? Honestly, are they really supposed to be role models for our youth?

No offense to any guys on here who made a career out of music, but most musicians are fucked up. Plain and simple. Most spend their days on a tour bus fueled by a cocktail of narcotics. I'm sure a lot smaller touring bands don't and lead normal lives but many world famous rock stars and musicians are a loose cannon. They aren't someone you should aspire to be. Elvis, Michael Jackson, or the Red Hot Chili Peppers aren't exceptions, they are the rule.

And is post-hardcore music really fucking up a generation? Come on, it's a niche at best. Guess who is fucking up a generation? Mainstream music. If I had a daughter she wouldn't be allowed to listen to the radio. My mp3 died while driving one day and I turned on the local top hits channel. I counted 8 songs in a row that were about sex. Between role models like Taylor "I fall on every dick imaginable" Swift, Miley "my dad probably abused me" Cyrus, and that bag of garbage called Ke$ha (emphasis on the money sign in her name), young girls today don't stand a chance. Boys don't have it any better. Justin Bieber, Sam Smith, Adam Levine and the rest of the faggots/simps aren't doing too well preaching masculine virtues.

My girlfriend made the comment that men and women have essentially switched genders on mainstream radio stations. She couldn't be more right. Women are spouting on about partying and banging randos, while the men (I'm using that term loosely) cry on and on about trying to get "the one" back. Rap isn't doing any better. While there are a handful of respectable rappers, most are simps at best. And with the exception of some older country music, most country singers are raging redneck pussies who can't even see the pedestal with a telescope. When I lived down south, it was painful to watch guys wearing boots and cowboy hats interact with women. Asking permission to hold their hands and shit, it was painful.

So using the handful of songs and bands I've mentioned in this thread, yeah, I would encourage younger boys to follow the genre. I love the mix of heavy unclean vocals with melodic transitions and cleans. I've been following it for the past 8 years or so and I've found plenty of masculine virtue contained within the lyrics. I've also listened to songs with really fucked up lyrics but take them at face value and enjoy the music. To each their own I guess.

RE: Post-hardcore/Screamo
when I think screamo I think of this kind of stuff:

bands like these were all over the DC area in the early 2000s.

other peoples' definition of screamo is very different from mine clearly.

RE: Post-hardcore/Screamo
A couple of bands that came up on my YouTube recommendations. While these are older albums, there is no shortage of upcoming badass post-hardcore/metalcore bands. I will continue to post new music in this thread for those who enjoy the genre.

Also, the mainstream rock station in my area has been giving a lot of attention to Asking Alexandria, Bring Me the Horizon, Crown the Empire, and Of Mice and Men. I love turning on the radio and hearing my favorite niche genre getting coverage. They've even hyped the new Punk Goes Christmas comp. featuring August Burns Red, Crown the Empire, Being As An Ocean, etc.

True gem of an old band that has been going forever. Too bad only first two albums are great just learned of them. Stoked (extra climatic step at 50 secs much love):
