One of my favorite bands as well. Though, I prefer their more clean/clear vocals. If you like that band you might like As Cities Burn too. Their first album is described as post-hardcore (if you'd ask me i'd say their other albums are better though). Also, the band Brand New has some post-hardcore songs.

^ I would but that would falsely represent the genre. You should just find bands that are slower and more melodic. I can't help you there because I love my post-hardcore with a heaping helping of sludge and grind.

Love this kind of shit. I'm in a "post-hardcore" band of regional fame along the lines of On Broken Wings, (old) Acacia Strain, and Emmure. I'm pretty burnt out from moder "djent" bands and deathcore, and I generally don't like the sing-songy metalcore bands either.

As far as this genre and subsequent sub-genres go, these days I rock a lot of Dillinger, car_bomb, The Chariot, Tony Danza, Bury Your Dead, War from a Harlot's Mouth, Ion Dissonance, and the bands mentioned above.

EDIT: If you're into mathcore then you need to be listening to car_bomb. They have two albums out currently - "Centralia" 2006 and "w^w^^w^w" 2012. Both will blow your mind.

Honorable Man, I think the first mewithoutYou was back in the scene when this genre really didn't even exist. There were a lot of really good bands touring the undercard with the more innovative punk bands when they were just getting exposure. They were some of my favorite shows. I once saw Avenged Sevenfold (they are more metal now than their first album) open up for Rise Against at a small club in Texas. At The Drive-in/ Sparta and BEARvsSHARK were a couple bands that weren't really fitting into any category but played with bands like Hot Water Music.

Spot on. Post Hardcore by definition is fast paced. In alot of ways it is fast Hard punk/thrash rock music that tends to have more progression and elements of heavy metal. Post hardcore is rife with massive breakdowns. In fact, that is pretty much what it is. Alot of fucking breakdowns and speed playing.

For the more melodic stuff, you would need to stick to the more progressive stuff. Probably half of the bands I list I posted has progressive metal as a second genre. The Fall of Troy definitely fit that bill. Try some old Thrice albums. They have a heavy surfer/skateboarder/California vibe in them. Back in the day, Thrice was almost considered pop because some regular women even listened to them. Dustin Kensrue the lead singer has an extremely high level of vocal skill than that of your average post hardcore singer. If he was a money guy he probably would have been another Justin Timberlake or Robin Thicke. That is alot of the reason why Thrice is soft as fuck since the late 2000s. They basically sold out and stopped rocking. Hey I won't hate on them, get paid. A voice like that is kinda wasted on heavy rock music in alot of ways, especially if you are a good looking guy, a big Christian, and you are not covered in tats and ear loops.

Im not sure if Thrice invented Post Hardcore, but they definitely popularized it.

Try anything from The Artist in the Ambulance's album and The Illusion of Safety. Both albums had hits and can be listened to from beginning to end easily.





Deadbolt has epic lyrics and is a cult classic.

Oh man, I'm pretty happy that there are two people here who have at least heard of mewithoutYou. Not that they're particularly obscure (the video I posted did get rotation back when music videos were on TV), but just that they are such an essential source of music for the people who love them. It isn't really the genre either, they did a folk album in 2009, but the lead singer is unlike anyone else I've ever heard. They are technically classified as post-hardcore, so it isn't really off-topic to post about them here. Also they have an upcoming album that really harkens back to their sound on Catch for Us the Foxes and Brother, Sister, which were post-hardcore and indie rock, respectively, and are also their two most acclaimed releases. This is the first single from Pale Horses which is out on the 16th of next month:





I'm curious to hear what the people in this thread think about that song and if they would consider it post-hardcore, at least as a subgenre. I can't wait to hear the rest, and Aaron Weiss has top-tier lyrics as always. "Iron mixed with oxygen as per the laws of chemistry and chance" inexplicably gives me goosebumps, like basically every other lyric he's ever written.

Also, I saw them last year on their 10th anniversary tour for Catch for Us the Foxes and it was the best show I've ever seen, especially since I've been listening to that album for ten years. I even grabbed a setlist off the stage during the encore and got Aaron to sign it on the way to their tour bus. So, yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of one band that falls under this genre.

Beloved - Failure On (the entire album)





Circa Survive has members from Saosin. Anthony Green the lead singer has a very nice singing voice in the falsetto range (Think Chico from El Debarge) basically a natural sounding high pitched tenor.

Beloved was a very short lived band. The lead singer became a pastor and broke up the band, but that album is legendary in post-hardcore/screamo genre. Every song is fucking good. They were known for vicious breakdowns that sounded very clean at the same time, lots of melodic riffs, lots of progression, exceptional lyrics, clean vocals, and growlish but clean sceams/vocals. Was very popular with early World of Warcraft PVP players, just like Thrice was.

Had to look up Djent, had not heard of it before. It kinda makes sense but sounds like splitting hairs too hard. Periphery and Animals As Leaders do have alot of similarities, but Periphery does not really sound as metal as AAL does. AAL has a darker more prog metal sound than Periphery. Not to mention the heavy Jazz-Fusion undertones. They still both sound very Mathcore, technique wise because of the avant garde playing with frenetic pacing/tablature .

If Djent is now a thing, you could probably say Sky Eats Airplane is djent. Regardless all 3 of these bands are weird as fuck if you step back and really look at their work. I love it all, and talked about AAL in the Metal thread, but it's a strange animal of a style to put words to. I have a very, very hard time describing AAL to casual music fans when they ask me about it.

Eh, the topic got us all talking about the same thing, isn't that the point? I like Thrice as well, and I think Dustin Kensrue's solo career is really interesting.

I concur, although I seem to enjoy It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Alright much more than the average mwY listener. That track is easily one of the highlights though, as it builds up to the chanting of "why not be utterly changed into fire" and I get chills every single time.

I was more saying that the sounds I am hearing in this genre remind me of what we are throwing out there. Maybe I should have said "They can exclude"... in a general sense, as in outside critique, not even in response to our discussion in the thread.

Hell yeah. Obviously I've heard of Fugazi, but I've never actually listened to them. They're next on my list and I'll post my thoughts here.

I was scrolling the post-hardcore chart on rateyourmusic and it seems I like the genre slightly more than I realized. In fact, the second highest rated post-hardcore album of all-time is also one of my favorite records ever:



I've listened to it hundreds of times and it never gets old.

Glassjaw is the shit. They started it all and continue to release great music. The coloring book EP form 2011 kicked ass and took things in a whole new direction.


Other than that, I also listen to a lot of the "first wave" bands that others went on to imitate, such as A static lullaby, Armor for sleep, escape the fate's first album (with ronnie).


I was never into Senses fail, or any of the "standard" screamo bands because they seemed to just follow a fomula. In my opinion bands like glassjaw / ASL kinda just stumbled upon the style almost by accident, at which point everyone else jumped on the bandwagon and started imitating them.


ASL's first album "And don't forget to breathe..." came out in 03' and pretty much set the standard. It's a shame their second album on Columbia bombed....

What does everyone think of the return of From First to Last and the bizarre transformation of their former frontman Sonny Moore into Skrillex?

Never got into them, but I always associate them with the rise of the 2000's screamo scene/MySpace era of heavy music. Was a strange time indeed.

My favorite From First to Last song was Note to Self. That whole album was good. Heroine was awful and their self-titled album after Sonny/Skrillex was decent. I haven't listened to anything else from them. I'll have to check out their newer music.

I always get a kick out of being hipster and telling girls in the bar I listened to Skrillex before he was Skrillex.
