It seems class related unless it's a strategic marriage for the upper class. Borderline middle and lower class Chinese guys simply can't be picky. The Chinese guys I know are very picky about looks and even social status. They won't date under a certain shade, attractiveness, or poverty level at all. They tend to date up in looks..girls are definitely better looking.

In SEA it's even pickier with the Chinese ethnic minority group. They won't even date people that are the majority ethnicity..ie. 100% filipino or thai.

I cannot find the post or wherever I wrote about it before, but Chinese men prefer:

1) Face (not literally)
2) Guanxi/money/connections
3) Porcelain white Skin
4 and 5) beautiful face or height
6) Education

If you look at that white woman, she hits every checkbox before beauty, so therefore what he chose makes perfect sense to me. Don't think for a minute that he would have a pretty Chinese wife either. He probably would have ended up with a 5 or 4. Guys do marry those ya know.

Also, familiarity breeds contempt. He probably had a few run ins with some tigers. So a gentle giant white woman that looks like she has mild Aspergers, would be just right for him. I have said it before, Chinese men have a saying that in English is, "Good Enough Wife". A wife that is good enough that won't cause trouble is more appreciated than a hotrod of a wife any day of the week for your average man. This cultural philosophy has been handed down for thousands of years from father to son. That's why you guys cannot really understand it well.

Edit: She provides guanxi to him by being a connection to America.
