Yeah they've departed from the books in some big ways - Jamie going to Dorne, Brienne finding both Stark girls... What the actual fuck?!

I didn't see the Jaime/Bronn team-up coming. In the book, Bronn survives a typically shit attempt by Cersei to kill him and Jaime fucks off to do something boring. In fact, I'm not sure if they ever even meet on paper.

Jesus, the potential amount of win from this combo could likely cause a hole in the space/time continuum.

I was so pissed that Euron Greyjoy has not been cast in the show. Or has he?

Daario might not be Euron, but he likely has some link to the ironborn: he allegedly hijacked 93 ships for Dany... exactly the same number of ships that Euron sent to get the dragons. I don't believe in coincidences when it comes to game of thrones. I'd like to think he is Euron, we don't really know what Euron is up to, aside from manipulating his brother Victarian every step of the way and wanting to steal dragons to invade westeros. To completely cut out such a central character from the show seems like a mistake, maybe he didn't get cut out.

On the subject of Bran, it has been made very obvious that he will warg a Dragon, and in the world of Ice and Fire I think that means that he WONT warg a dragon. I think that it is interesting though that apparently the whole series was supposed to be from just Bran's POV originally. I don't know how that would have worked out. Either way Bran is extremely important.

I don't think it will be Fire vs Ice necessarily. In fact I think that Fire and Ice need to be in balance and the real threat is actually from the Krakken/Drowned God.

But who knows..."What is dead may never die, but rises harder and stronger" sounds a lot like the Others' wights to me.

Personally I think the Drowned God is some Cthulhu-like deity and Patchface is a direct line to that insanity.

I like that Preston Jacobs dude even more because the establishment feminist nerds don't like him. One of them tried to get his YouTube channel shut down once, and he bitchslapped them back with a video.

Spoilers. speaking of feminist nonsense...

In the tv show, they are really foreshadowing bron's death like crazy, likely at the hands of the sand snakes(doran martel's daughters and oberon's daughters). because, you know, grrl power and all.

Jaime asks bron how he wants to die and he said something like "as an old man, in bed with me wife and kids around". It doesn't bother me so much that bron is going to die, he is a soldier, but having such a great soldier die at the hands of short haired feminists is just a little too much to swallow. They should have sent one of the sand snakes to fight the mountain instead of oberon because they are essentially immune to death because that is how the game of thrones universe works, sort of how sweetrobin and tomin are weak little boys and therefore they might as well be indestructible for game of thrones purposes.

Naa dude if Bronn is going to die, he is going to replace Arys Oakheart and get killed by Areo Hotah while trying to save Myrcella and facing off with the Sand Snakes.

The Sand Snakes do give the show a chance to hammer us with feminst grrl power though.

Btw, the Sand Snakes are just Oberyn's daughters. Doran's daughter, Arianne, has been cut from the show, as has his son Quentyn - very strange since they are critical to the plot of the books, and to the larger Dornish Master Plan.

The whole Jaime and Bronn thing doesn't make sense at all to me. Cersei or Kevan could just write to them and tell them that it's off and come get their daughter. If the Dornish hurt her it'd cause a war and I don't think Doran wants that right yet and he isn't keen on hurting her anyway.

Am I missing something?

Plus it seems like a suicide mission with little chance for success. I hope Jaime and Bronn get captured and Doran is just like "Jesus, you guys are morons."

I don't know if they have been cut, or are just not going to be in season 5? It seems like there is a lot of the story left to be told, they are just going to combine some of the characters to simplify everything. Book 5 is extremely long, they may just break it up into 2 seasons. Book 6 looks to be even longer.

I never understood the Arys plotline in the books, it never goes anywhere and fails completely and I never knew who he was except for a boring super loyal knight who was probably going to die 'valiantly' in a stupid way over nothing. and he does.

They seem to be giving the mission to Jaime just to give him some screen time rather than try to introduce a new character? Jaime doesn't really appear much at all in book 5. I guess he could be the one to die if they really did cut lady stoneheart from the show as well?

Pretty much all my interest it's earned in the past few seasons have been undone by the first few episodes of this one.

Luckily Arya's plot is still going. Sansa/Littlefinger, Lady Stoneheart, the Boltons, The Greyjoys, Tyrion, Aegon Targaryen, Strong Belwas, either cut entirely or had their plots changed in a major way.

is it worth staying the course with the books or dropping that and picking up the show? I'm just starting book 4, have never seen the show but am worried that it will take forever for the book series to be done, now that it seems the show is the priority and must obviously end in a sooner time frame than the books

eh. tv littlefinger has been altered more than any other character: note that he had zero plan when killing lysa tully on tv. He basically killed her and hoped everything would work out on tv with zero plan or forethought, very unlike littlefinger. In the books he blames the bard who he didn't like much anyways and had him tortured, continues bribing other lords to strengthen his position even more

His true goal seems to be to destabilize the country by bankrupting it and creating more and more civil wars. sending sansa to marry ramsey and manipulate him, could actually be a good idea. (yeah right)

Ah fuck it.

There is a later scene(I think?) before LF leaves he tells sansa that the boltons are really dangerous so maybe he does understand that he is sending his greatest piece into the hells but still, what the fuck does he even get out of that arrangement?

Varys does seek to serve the Realm from his own point of view. And his view is that a stable Targaryen line is the best hope to keep the Seven Kingdoms together in the long term; Robert Baratheon was always going to be a volatile king and was basically a figurehead for the nobles' discontent with Aerys. This is particularly so since Varys would have known from a very early point that Robert has no legitimate heirs - one and all are Lannisters.

Varys knew that eventually this would come out - that Littlefinger or someone like him would get hold of that knowledge and use it. The Lannisters' illegitimacy piles one excuse for civil war on another -- not only was Robert Baratheon an usurper, his children are not even his. I'm guessing Varys's idea was to uplift Aegon Blackfyre instead, who at least is a descendant of a Targaryen if only a bastard, and who has been raised responsibly in the role of king-ing, unlike Stannis who was too brittle and Renly who was too soft as well as being a sword-swallower.

This is not to defend Varys's methods, but it makes him fascinating in that in spite of the amorality of his role and maneuvers, he is still a principled man in one respect: he believes in the Seven Kingdoms, or at least believes in the power of the Targaryen name. And while he might be ambivalent about magic, he fears it given how he became a eunuch: thus he unconsciously believes there's a certain magic still in having someone of Valyrian descent on the throne.

The Quentyn storyline was terrible in the books.

I think his excision is significant. If Bran ends up warging the dragons then it won't matter who owns them.

But Aegon is a fake, probably a Blackfryre, and possibly Vary's nephew and Illyrio's son. So Varys is just selfish.

Littlefinger is trying to fulfill prophecy/magic related to Harrenhall.

I don't understand how Robert can be classified as a usurper. Dynasties rise and fall for many reasons. Robert was the legitimate ruler by right of conquest - the same way Aegon gained power. Robert's rule was recognized by all who weren't Targaryen sympathizers and Dany, who is just an entitled bitch who expects to be given a continent to be given to her despite her families overthrow.

God I fucking hate Dany.

Has that ever been stated anywhere in the books? The fans over on the song of ice and fire forums seem to think young griff is a fake, but would varys really go along with that? He would have been the one swapping out the babies, probably got word that the mountain was coming to kill Ellia and her babies and he swapped Aegon out, had him raised with Jon Connington(who is also not in season 5)

It would still be really easy to add Euron and (fake?)Aegon to season 6, there was talk from hbo about making the show into 8 or 10 seasons. Just add them the way Oberyn was added last season, either they will succeed or fail.

here is the case that young griff is a blackfyre pretender. We never get a POV chapter from Varys or Ilirio, the closest we get is the exposition from Varys at the epilogue of book v after he assassinates kevan lannister. And who knows how much of that is actually true, but why lie to a man you just assassinated? If we ever get a POV chapter from Varys, (or Ilirio for that matter)that could clear a lot of this up

edited to clean up the links

As Varys himself says, the walls have ears, and there are little birds everywhere. So Varys could be making that speech FOR someone.

Also Varys would only have to switch the babies if Aegon is real, which I am saying he is not. If Aegon is fake, the Varys just has to say he switched the babies, and raise a boy to believe he were real.

Jon Connington was gay for and in love with Rhaegar, so convincing him would take very little effort.
