What is the most durable type of shoe material? I am going to get custom shoes made but I want something that will last years. At the moment I am considering either ostrich or crocodile. Any thoughts? Also what type of material is good in case it rains and wont get too damaged?

Shell Cordovan is probably your best bet. I'm also a fan of Horween Chromexcel leather.

Don't go with exotics if you want something durable. IMO, those are shoes you break out occasionally, not frequently.

Any type of leather is good as long as its taken care of. Something like Cordovan is a more durable than regular leather.

The key is have a shoe that you can maintain yourself. You need to be able to moisturize the leather, polish and shine them yourself. Cedar shoe trees are a must %100.

Make sure they can be re soled. This is a must, as the soles will need to be replaced every few years with regular wear.

I have this nasty habit of kicking off my shoes. Its probably not the best for shoe health.

How do you guys do it? Seems like a huge pain in the ass to sit down and unknot and untie each shoe. Whats your process when coming home and removing shoes?

- You might be able to score a pair of Johnson & Murphy's in your price range if you are smart about it (I've pulled a few at $120, so I know it can be done, just not without a sale).
- Johnson & Murphy is a solid bang for your buck
- I'd forget about Gucci for a long time. Prices can be insane (like $5,000+). You might be able to get a "cheap" pair for $500, but you won't be buying those because you like, but rather because you want to say you wear Gucci shoes. I'd honestly buy a Lamborghini before a pair of $5,000 shoes (and I'd have to be really fucking liquid to buy a Lamborghini)

Just bought my first pair of Sperry top sider boat shoes and damn these things hurt a lot when I wear them around even with socks. I was reading online that I should dip them in water and then walk around in them to wear them in.

They rub a lot on the back of my foot and I will get blisters if I wear them very often.

I had to throw some extra cushion in mine, and for the rubbing use moleskins.

When I come home I sit on my bench, take off my shoes and stick my cedar trees in them. Every time. Without fail.

Its a bit different when I am at a party or wherever. The idea is that good practices when I can outweigh the bad practices when I cant.

I have never seen a pair of Gucci shoes that expensive. Maybe if you look at some nearly extinct animal or something. If you roll into a Gucci store you are looking at about $6-700 Canadian for something solid.

You can get Gucci on sale for $300 if you are diligent and for that price its a no brainer. A shoe that will last over a decade and are in the comfort range of a good training shoe.

Any recommendations for good "nightclub/bar/lounge" shoes? Usually I'd just wear some designer sneakers but sometimes they don't fly. My longwing oxfords seem a little too formal. Trying to find the right balance of something that looks pretty nice but not too formal, but I can still get venues with a dress code.

If you can afford it, grab a pair of Allen Edmonds wingtips in a bourbon or walnut color. These brown colors match much better with a majority of clothes, than black shoes.

They are pricey at $300-400 but if you give them good maintenance(shoe shines, leather conditioner, and resole when necessary, the cost of ownership may actually cheaper in the long run(>10 years) than buying Aldo's or other shoes in the $75-200 range each year, plus you will have something that is high quality and looks classic.

Another forum mentioned these boots below, and I actually wound up getting them. These are versatile boots. You can wear them with jeans all the way up to a suit.

I bought them from styleforum's marketplace a few years ago, I believe they are a Brooks Brothers (made by Alden I believe) Shell Cordovan or chromexcel? Not bad for $75. I was having some issues with the cushioning so I put some "superfeet" soles with better arch support and they're a lot better now. Still concerned about taking them and using them on a night out in Vegas or something along those lines due to walking, dancing, and just general getting shit fucked up.

I'm looking more at lines like Ted Baker, Paul Smith, Trickers, Mark McNairy etc. Basically some dressy but pushing the envelope British designers where the style isn't so old man.

These brown Ecco New City Lights get me the most compliments. I shine them up good and they go with just about anything, even jeans if you wear a nice shirt also. I bought these in 2005 and they are still going strong. I wear them about twice a month. I believe the closest thing Ecco has to these things now are their Windsor Plain Toes.

I agree with other posters that it's better to buy a $250-400 pair of shoes from Ecco, Alan Edmonds, or Alden than a $100 pair from Timberland or similar brand because you will get much more value from the better shoes. The latter two are higher quality shoes than Ecco, but IMO aren't quite as comfortable.
