I have contemplated bringing my living costs down but part of me would rather spend more to have my solitude at home and just be out working more. My last roomate expericne I found that I had to LEAVE home to get my solitude. I would go for walks and stuff just to take a break from the full house of people. The house was mostly extroverted people and it was okay some days but I always enjoyed the place most when it was empty and o could just hear myself breathe.

To me socialising is very much me heading OUT of home. Home is very much a place to wind down and relax for me.

I'd probably be committing murder within a week or two if I had to live with a roommate. Even when I'm "hanging out" with friends (in itself a pointless and horrible waste of time when it stretches past a couple of hours once or twice a week) at my place, I'm eager to kick them out sooner rather than later.

I moved out on my own 20 years ago when I was 18, and aside from a few times living with girlfriends for a maximum of five months (surely preferable to a roommate from my perspective, but still very difficult), I've had my dorm rooms and apartments blissfully free of long term personal space invaders.

The extroavert still has energy for 10 more.

The introvert will be more methodical and selective in their approach, enable a deeper connection through their thread choices, make less mistakes, and potentially be more likely to only need 10 approaches to achieve success. Icon_biggrin

If you mean a lay in 10 approaches, I seriously doubt this, even if you're veteran. The odds and the social environment are just way too stacked against that.

On the other hand I second methodical and selective which means your approaches are on the whole likely to go well through precise target selection. That's what I do, even though I am an ENTJ.

Seems to be an NTJ thing, although sometimes this analysis will come back to bite you in the ass.

Do the NTJ's here find the 3 second rule tough to follow?

But once I got some momentum going with approaches, I noticed that I'm always more energized after socializing. I feel like I want to talk with more and more people any chance I get. I considered changing careers and going into sales. I realized how important connecting with others is.

I often wonder if introversion is simply an excuse for people too lazy to put in the work. Kind of how people who are overweight will often say "Oh I have a slow metabolism," when in reality only 200 calories/day separate the best from the worst.

This even extends to how the obese will blame their condition on genetics, when in reality, they've just been eating at a caloric surplus everyday of their lives.

Three answers:

1). Introversion is a personality trait, and there is a large genetic component to personality. Doesn't mean you can't change it. But when most of you get a little older and watch nephews and nieces grow up, you'll notice some are outgoing and some are shy and it's inborn. Here is one source.

2). Obesity also has a genetic component. That doesn't excuse overeaters. But studies have been done that show three people can eat the same thing and the thin one loses weight, the medium one stays the same, and the obese one gains weight. I can't find a source link for this, but Dr. Dean Edell used to speak of this on his radio show and he was not a "fat apologist" but a realist. If you're overweight, there are ways to reset your metabolism -- building muscle mass and staying on a diet for more than three years. The good news is this is much easier for men, who can add on muscle easier than women.

3). I think before new members are allowed to start threads they should be required to contribute at least 50 posts, if not more. We should know a bit about who you are. I made it a point to be a regular before I started my own thread. I smell a trollish attitude in this post with its attempt to provoke both introverted and overweight members. The word "excuse" set off my troll alarm.

Every aspect of human nature (personality, body size, intelligence) is highly heritable. I believe the highly conscientious can make changes on the margins but they will always be very small. That's why I never bash people for being fat, shy, socially awkward, or whatever else.

The last time I was at a work function one of the guys was bragging about how I'd hit on no less than 5 girls during a 20 minute span. I'm a solid negotiator and I'm good with talking to people. When the company needs someone who can talk to a difficult customer, they always come to me, and 30 year business veterans have come to me to talk about their negotiating tactics.

But I just don't like to do it. I find it exhausting. I prefer to stay at home with my books and games, and on long breaks I've often gone for 5 days or more without saying anything but the simplest pleasantries to the guy at the gas station or restaurant. I would be perfectly happy on an isolated island with nothing but a good internet connection and a supply of food.

Good post, people conflate introversion with shyness/social-ineptness.
I have no trouble connecting with people, but I'd prefer to spend most of my time alone. Like I've said in other threads, the desire to get laid/paid is the only thing that keeps me from becoming a hermit.

RE: Is introversion a myth?
Do any of you other introverts prefer taking long drives alone? While I've certainly enjoyed taking road trips with other people(close friends), I most enjoy my long drives when I'm alone.

^ I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE driving. But I could see myself enjoying a long drive. I simply hate being behind the wheel of a car. Something about it just annoys me to no end. I enjoy moving around and doing things. It helps me get out of my head and into the world.
