Erica Lynn Mesa, 28, has been in jail since her arrest Sept. 29, according to WTVR. Mesa admitted to having sex with several students at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford County last year, police said.

In a confession obtained by Stafford Sheriff's deputies, Mesa said she had sex with the boys, one of whom was underage at the time, because it made her feel "attractive and wanted." She told how she had sex with one victim in a car in a commuter lot on his eighteenth birthday.

She also described how she had multiple students over at her house while her husband was away. She said she made one of the boys wait his turn in the basement while she had sex with another upstairs.

"She is not a pedophile," her attorney, Mark Gardner, said in court Friday. "She was not preying on people who had no interest in participating."

Sheriff's deputies began investigating Mesa in 2014 after they received a tip from administration at Colonial Forge. Investigators found a electronic trail linking Mesa to her victims, which included nude photos of herself that she'd sent to a 16-year-old student, according to WTOP.

Mesa was charged with the sex abuse of two boys, but told police that she had sex with a total of four victims, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. In exchange for her pleas, prosecutors reduced two charges against her, and dropped two others. She faces a maximum of 22 years in prison when she is sentenced May 21.

In court Friday, her lawyer said that his client's poor choices cost her her marriage and her career. As part of her plea deal, Mesa will register as a sex offender.

I'm well aware of the AoC in NJ. That's the reason I picked 14 as the hypothetical age. With regards to that law, her AoC would go up to 18 because she is in position of authority.

Investigators also found out that the 27-year-old math teacher, who is married, sent nude photos of herself to her underage lover using her cell phone.

Erica Mesa has worked at Colonia Forge High School since 2009. She has been placed on administrative leave.

Her husband of two years, Keith Mesa, works as a social studies teacher and head volleyball coach at the same school.

Although she wrote online that at first she could not stand her future husband because he was 'set in his ways' and 'intense,' not before long the two started dating and got engaged two years later.

Erica Mesa is currently being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Re-read what her lawyer said. Paraphrasing: "She's not a monster. Those boys wanted it as much as she did".

Does the case have to hit the appellate courts to set a precedent? Going back to my hypothetical. I'm found guilty of the same crime in the state this is going on. Wouldn't my attorney point to this case as evidence of my innocence? Again, this is all going on the assumption that she's getting a pussy pass.

Makes no difference if an underage kid wants to do it, they *cannot* consent. Even for the 18 year olds, if she is in a position of authority (like a teacher), in many places that's also illegal.

I can't think of a situation where a trial court would set a formal legal precedent since at trial no new change to the law is introduced. Precedents are set when a case is appealed. Appeals courts do not re-try the case, but look for errors or omissions that should not have happened, something the judge allowed or ruled on which he should not have, etc. No new facts are introduced, but if there was something about the law itself that the judges decided should be different, their actions may set a precedent (or they may remand back to the lower court for a new trial). If they overturn the trial court decision the government may appeal all the way to the highest court in the state. Decisions in one state supreme court that result in a state wide precedent are not binding in other states; same is true for federal circuits - decisions from one circuit are not binding but they may be persuasive.

If it is appealed all the way to the Supreme Court and assuming the SC does not refuse to hear the case, then a national precedent may result. I wouldn't expect this yet with respect to age of consent decisions, but who knows - if you asked me ten years ago about how far gay marriage and legalized pot would go I'd probably be wrong about that prediction.
