Hey players, I have a question for all the real sirs on the Roosh V Forums who know their shit when it comes to smokes and alcoholic beverages, more particularly cigars and whiskies.

I'm personally a huge whisky fan and I love to drink them in the evenings while doing homework or simply enjoying myself with some friends while listening to classical music.

My favorite type of whisky is a smokey Scotch Single Malt from Islay, the smokier the better in my opinion. Lagavulin 16 is by far my favorite younger single malt for its strong and rich smokey flavor. I drink this whisky the most.

Now my question is: What type and brand of cigar would go well with this whisky? I obviously know my shit when it comes to whiskies, but I'm inexperienced when it comes to cigars. I'd like to find a fine quality cigar that goes well with this whisky and isn't too expensive (as I'm an university student and far from rich).

I'm not really a heavy smoker and I don't smoke regular cigarettes very often (and when I do they have weed in them). I'm not looking for something to smoke on a regular basis, just something I could enjoy on a Sunday evening with my Scotch whisky. So that might be a factor for the type or brand of cigar best suited for my tastes.

Any ideas?

The only reason I paired them was because I liked them separately. It would take one refined fucking palate to accurately pair a cigar and whisky.

Also funny that when I drink Whiskey and smoke a cigar in club, girls automatically size me up differently.

As far as combinations go - the best you can afford. Personally I am not that much of an expert to sense much of a difference - I am far more picky with the Whiskey I choose than with the cigar.

Great question. I am a fan of the Islay single malts as well with a strong preference for Laphroaig. My preference for pairings is to go with a mild cigar, preferably from DR, like an Arturo Fuente or Macanudo with a smoky/peaty whiskey.

They say strong whiskey-strong cigar and mild whiskey-mild cigar but I tend to prefer the contrast and enjoy a nice mild smoke when drinking. When both are strong it tends to overpower my palate and just in general taste too strong. When I smoke, I prefer to be able to taste the whiskey over the cigar aftertaste and mild cigar does this perfectly for me.

When I started my pairings I'd go to the local smoke shop and ask for what the gentleman recommended as a mild cigar. I found a good smoke shop knows best. I'd sit with the old timers and try a few milds getting advice on cigars and life.

As to my recommendations?, find a good local smoke shop and get yourself known there then track down you're Lagavulin 16 and pair it with Chateau Fuente.

I have a humidor at home, smoke frequently during the warmer months, and enjoy whiskey/bourbon/scotch anytime after 10am.

I've never had a decent cigar and decent whiskey together and not liked it.

Maybe I'm just not a connoisseur.

I smoked my first cigar at 16, in Cuba, a Romeo Julietta Churchill and have stuck with the brand pretty much ever since.

I'm sure there are better cigars out there but every time I take the screw off the top of a case I get transported back to Cuba in my mind!

My current favourite tipple is a brand called Monkey Shoulder. It's a blended whisky. Very, very drinkable.

There's something magical about being dressed to the nines, standing outside a high end club, hotel or restaurant with a cigar and a whisky; taking in the world and your surroundings.

I would imagine that the Gurka Grand Reserve would go well with whiskey due to it's cognac infusion. I'm not a cigar smoker, but I had this one once and it was very good.

To cool down in the evenings, I personally prefer a Casa Torano and a glass of Glenmorangie Original on the rocks. Seems to blend well in and of themselves, though I certainly don't have it down to a science

Question on the side; would some men look downright "silly" smoking a cigar? I have friends who look like naturals with them but I feel like when I am in public and have a cigar in between my 20-something lips it looks slightly dorky and almost reminiscent of the 8 year old trying to look cool with a cigarette. Is this a self-induced image, or do some men truly look less splendid with a cigar?

Thanks for the tips guys! Decided to go with a Balmoro Collection set to try out some different cigars from Balmoro and pair them with different whiskys. I'm really enjoy it.

I think unless you look like a teenage kid a cigar will only make you look better and more masculine. If you can grow a decent beard and you haven't already, do so. A beard will make you look more mature and more masculine and for some reason I think men with beards smoking cigars look way cooler than men without beards smoking cigars.

Despite my age (26) I still look quite young and people usually guessed I was between 19-21 years old, until I grew a beard! Now I have a nice beard, same length as Roosh's beard. It makes me look older, more experienced and more mature. Now people no longer estimate my age around 19-21 years old, but actually around 25-28 years old! A beard can really make a huge difference.

So long story short: If you're afraid you'll look like that 8 years old kid with the cigarette, grow a beard!

Myshkin, i've been offered exactly the same bottle for my birthday. If you havent tried it I also recommend the nikka 'from the barrel'. It's not too expensive, you can easily feel the taste of the barrel, and it has a really explosive flavour. A manly drink.

I'm afraid I don't know much about cigars though.

One of the best young single malts I've had is the Alexander Murray & Co. "Bon Accord". It's currently available at Costco (at least here in California) for only $20 a bottle. It's not MacAllen 18 but it blows away JWB.

As for cigars it's hard to go wrong with anything from Carlos Torano.

A bit of an amateur hour on my part, but my choice cigar and whiskey pairing is the Perdomo Lot 23 and some Fireball. Nothing like that fire in your throat coupled with a nice oaky cigar.

No disrespect hwuzhere, but Calicoat, a man drinking Lagavulin 16, is living in a different world than the Fireball crowd.

I don't smoke cigars, but I want to make sure that I don't downplay your recommendation. It way very well be an excellent smoke.

Calicoat: Have you tried this with a nice cigar? If you go to the shady, unorganized liquor store, they may have a bottle of it. I'm not talking about the edition that was released earlier in 2015. You are looking for the one from 2011 or so. I found one today and cut a deal on the 1L. It contains Talisker, Caol Ila, Cragganmore, and Linkwood with each being at least 15 years old.



The reason that I recommend this one in particular is summed up by this comment:

For the money the Padron 3000 thru 7000 series is a great value.




I smoke 1-5 cigars a week either sitting on my patio or at a local upscale bar/ restaurant that has an outside patio. I'm Cuban so I think I'm genetically predisposed to enjoying cigars and at any given time I keep about a dozen different brands of cigars in my humidor. The Padron line is sort of my "everyday/ can't go wrong" cigar and I order them by the box. I prefer the maduro wrapper with scotch or bourbon and natural wrapper with wines, brandy, or cognac. They are not cheap but they are definitely not expensive relative to other cigars. I won't buy cheap cigars...they're a waste

I'd also suggest trying as many cigars as you can to discover what you like. I actually keep a journal of the cigars I try where after smoking a cigar I affix the label to the page and make notes and rate them afterwards. This helps me track what I want to purchase again and avoid those I don't (I also do this with wines)

One way to try several cigars is to buy some of the "sampler" packs available from sites like Thompson Cigars (among others) They have a lot of different cigars including all the major brands as well as others you've never heard of. If you join their online cigar club they'll send you a free sampler.

My go to cigar as of late has been the Don Tomas Maduro Robusto. For the price ($5 a stick), in Canada any ways, it's not an overly flavourful cigar, but it's a good smoke and pairs well with most liquors. It's more of a mid-body cigar, so if you want something more mild you may want to stay away from this cigar. I compare this cigar to something like Budweiser, it's not the best beer, but for the price and flavour, you won't be disappointed, but you won't be blown away either.

The Don Tomas Maduro Robusto is actually another pretty good value for the $. For around the same price I prefer the Padron 4000 which has a fuller flavor and better draw. The better draw to me is important when pairing with a liquor as more smoke volume increases the flavor interactions....just my preference.

Hi Times is great for wines, liquor, craft beers, etc. Hands down one of the best wine cellars in the OC.

Also not a bad place to take a date. They have a wine bar and do featured tastings all the time. If it's a pre-first bang date I like to have them meet me at my house then Uber over for a wine tasting, Uber back home and go for the close.
