Gay groups still unhappy with NYC St. Patrick's parade

For the second consecutive year, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council are boycotting the nation's largest and, at 250 years, oldest St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The reason: After a backlash last year against a ban on gay groups led to de Blasio being the first mayor in 20 years to stay away from the popular event, parade organizers said they would allow only one gay group to march with a banner in this year's parade.
That unit will be [email protected], a corporate group for gay employees of NBCUniversal, a parade sponsor whose local affiliate will broadcast the event Tuesday.
Cities such as Boston and Washington had gay groups in their St. Patrick's Day parades this year.
Organizers of the New York parade had long refused entry to gay groups, based on Roman Catholic opposition to homosexuality. The parade is steeped in Catholic tradition. Cardinal Timothy Dolan is this year's grand marshal.
The church, while not revising its doctrine, has become more welcoming to gay men and lesbians under Pope Francis.
New York parade organizers have said other gay groups may apply for the 2016 parade.
Organizers did not respond to a phone call and Facebook message seeking comment.
"We are proud to become the 1st LGBT group to march in New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade," the group said on its Facebook page.
In a statement issued by NBCUniversal, Craig Robinson, executive vice president and chief diversity officer, said, "We approach the opportunity with respect for the event's heritage, culture and tradition, as well as hope and excitement for this first step towards an increasingly inclusive era for the parade."
Emmaia Gelman of the New York group Irish Queers has been pushing for a gay group to openly march in the parade for 20 years.
"The parade is still controversial," she said. Allowing an employee group of a corporate sponsor was an effort to divert attention from the issue and is not inclusiveness, she said.
Other corporate sponsors who boycotted last year have returned to the parade this year, including brewers Guinness and Heineken.
"We are delighted to announce that Guinness has made the decision to resume its sponsorship of the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade," its parent company, Diageo, said in a written statement. "While there is still work to be done, we are pleased that the parade organizers have taken steps to allow the LGBT community to be represented. The parade is an important way for Guinness to support the Irish community, and we look forward to celebrating with millions of New Yorkers on March 17th."
In Washington, the D.C. Center for the LGBT Community led a contingent Sunday of more than 40 people carrying banners and waving gay pride rainbow flags in the capital's annual parade.
"There was no pushback," Fowler said. "The D.C. St. Patrick's parade has always been inclusive."
For example, he said, practitioners of the Chinese spiritual discipline Falun Gong marched behind them in the parade.
And for the first time in Boston, gay groups marched openly in the Irish parade Sunday.
In the past, Boston parade organizers said admitting gays would violate their Roman Catholic beliefs. In 1995, the Supreme Court ruled in their favor based on the First Amendment right of free speech.
The gay military veterans service group OutVets and gay rights group Boston Pride joined the celebration Sunday at the invitation of the sponsor, the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council.
"We march today for the memories of those thousands and thousands of people who went before us, some who went to their graves in the closet," OutVets founder Bryan Bishop, an Air Force veteran, told his group before the parade.
Boston's mayors had boycotted the event since the Supreme Court ruling. This year, Mayor Marty Walsh, Gov. Charlie Baker and other Massachusetts political leaders took part.
De Blasio's office issued a statement: "St. Patrick's Day parades from Boston to Dublin have opened their arms to the LGBT community. The decision by the 5th Avenue parade organizers to include one group from NBC, while a step in the right direction, is still not inclusive enough. The mayor hopes more progress can be made soon, and the parade will be more inclusive in the future, and if that happens he will be happy to participate. But until then, he will continue to decline to march."

As someone who isn't religious in any way, it still pains me to see the Catholic church bent over to accommodate men who enjoy being bent over. I hope they are respectful, and that the naked men covered in green body paint riding on a float made of dildos are AT LEAST wearing rosaries.

Saint Patrick's day is supposed to honor those of Irish heritage and tradition. But of course they need to turn it into a narcissistic way for them to show off somehow - "looook at meeeeeeee!"

He wanted to ban horses from pulling carriage tours in the city.

If there's one thing I learned about living and working in West Hollywood, it's that fags love their parades. Seriously, it seemed like every month San Vicente gets shut down for some stupid pride parade which diverts traffic to La Cienega, which makes an already shitty commute nearly impossible.

I went to the St. Patty's day, completely by mistake. I was on a trip in NYC and had no clue what day it was, I was drunk in the middle of the day, wandering around looking for Carnegie Deli, and as I got closer to 5th ave I could hear a terrible ruckus, and after seeing everyone in green and a bunch of drunk Irish youths in the streets, I realized, "Holy shit! I'm at the St. Paddy's day parade in NYC!" I hung out for a while and it's a pretty badass sight, the bagpipe players and drummers n shit. I'd highly recommend going.

Can't say I find gay pride parades appealing but I do think that gays should be allowed to have their own parade if they wish. Don't understand why they feel the need to included in every single space, including ones that aren't designed for them.

If some Protestant Christian church group or another religious group or a non-Irish ethnic group was whining about not being included in parade that is meant to be a celebration of Celtic Catholic culture I would think there were being idiotic too.

The types of homo's who want to get in your face about being gay are the ones who truly believe it is their right to do so. They're like feminists and have the same delusions of grandeur about how they portray themselves.

In short they need a reality check. There is diversity and acceptance but screaming about how proud you are about taking or receiving dick as a man is something I don't want to see, hear or know about. They're deviants.

And whats more it will never be enough. You accept them into parades they will keep on pushing for more and before you know it a quarter of the parade is made of shemales, queers, drag queens and beach boys.

Though it's readily apparent and accepted that Saint Patrick's Day is a drinking holiday masquerading under the guise of a religious celebration, it is still grounded within Catholicism. I doubt De Blasio and the rest of his sycophants would outwardly harangue an Islamic celebration that excluded homosexuals. Respect, or disregard, the beliefs all OF religions and at least you will have some integrity.

I generally find Richard Dawkins to be a smug, pompous, know-it-all faggot, but at least he doesn't save his punches for the religions sane enough to ignore his twitter postings.

The gay rights movement is just like feminism - the more you give them, the more they'll take, regardless of whether it's actually "equal" or not. Both groups will eventually try to control everything they can (media, churches, government,entertainment, etc.) and make life miserable for anyone who doesn't see it their way. I get sick of hearing things like this.

I used to do security for a NY politician(I won't mention his name), but he marched in one of those Gay Pride Parades. Because I was assigned to him, I had no choice but to march also. I have nothing against the gay lifestyle(my brother is gay) and I respect their right to choose how they want to live their life, but some of the things I saw in this parade would not have been accepted in any other parade. There would definitely be an outcry from the public if there was a "straight parade" with the participants walking around in thongs with their ass cheeks hanging out, dry humping each other, tongue kissing and simulating sex during the middle of the day in full view of little children.
