Dad was a photographer. The picture is overexposed due to too bright a flash on the dress, or wrong shooting settings, and is the source of the colour confusion.

That being said, I had a dark olive green peacoat when I was younger that girls used to tell me was a dark grey, and spent a year or two living through this argument.

Digital photography can't process the complexities of white light the way Film Photography can. When the light is too bright, it washes out everything into a uniform white, and leeches into the picture around it.

Note the detail to the right of the dress in Tuthmosis' animated version, and how detail is added when the dress is blue (correct exposure) and how it is washed out until it almost vanishes when the dress looks white (overexposure). That's leeching from the white light above and below it.

It just completely changed for me. it was clearly white-and-gold. Then changed to blue and black.

What I will say is that is looked better when I saw it as an white and gold dress.

EDIT:

When I saw it as white and gold, the "white" part of the dress feels unsettling. Like it wasn't really white but seemed white. Now as I see the dress as black and blue, the black part feels unsettling. I have concluded the dress (as it is shown in this picture) must be gold and blue, but my mind can't see that combination at once. it being blue and gold is backed up by the color analysis

I cant vote.
When I initially looked, it was white/gold.
After I reached the end of the page, I scrolled back up, and it slowly turned blue/black as I looked at it.

I'm gonna rest my eyes and see if I can't see it as white/gold again.

When I initially saw it I voted white/gold and thought you guys were taking the piss.

Now it looks blue/black.

Since voting I have been working on an assignment staring at a screen for a long time and also am heaps more tired. I wonder if that has something to do with it.
