Determination not to become a casualty sadly often depends on your willingness to do things that make you look stupid. Like crossing the road five times along a 200 yard stretch to avoid certain types or in other cases using a walking stick despite being a young, fit man (assumption).

Some cops might give you trouble. At $100 bucks it should be something you wouldn't chafe at parting with if they wanted to confiscate it. Just tell them you use it as an opener to pick up chicks and play innocent about your Segal-ish intentions. It's better than finding yourself in a bad situation with nothing but your dick in your hand, and in any case a lot of common thugs will have a primitive aversion to approaching a man with a whacking-stick. It's a losing proposition for them if there are easier targets about.

Plan B, part two. Find a gun range that allows you to become a member and use a range-gun without having a license. I don't know if such a thing exists in France but it would be worth a look. If you can't own a gun then you should at least be familiar with them and skilled enough to use one if things get ugly. A slow slide into anarchy can take a lot of forms, and if you finally decide that buying a gun on the black market is literally more important than obeying the law then you'll still be in a bad position if you don't know how to use it effectively.

Plan B part three. Find a traditional masculine club of some sort that will act as a surrogate tribe if society goes full-retard. This will be hard if you don't look like everyone else, but not impossible. Just tell them you want to learn about "the real France". This is code for telling them you reject progressivism and declare allegiance to the old-school. You might be surprised at how welcoming they are. In ugly times having another loyal pair of hands on a gun is priceless, but they're likely to be a shrewd bunch so if you feed them a line of bullshit they'll detect it and shut you out. That I can guarantee 100%.

Plan B part four. Having followed steps two and three you will have access to a sort of insider's black market for guns. Keep enough gold or silver handy to pay for one if the rule of law in your area starts to get dicey. These folks might seem super polite and totally legit, but trust me, every "gun guy" in a gun-control nation knows someone who knows someone who has some pieces squirreled away for a worthy customer or cause.

All of this might sound hard, but the first step is the hardest and from there it gets easier as you go. I know these might seem like rather long term investments in what also seems like a short term collapse, but five years ago I thought we'd be killing each other over scraps of food by 2012. Start today. If you put this kind of thing off and in a year not much has changed then you're going to feel like a real dunce.

In my experience the hardest part about increasing your survivability is stepping well outside your comfort zone. After all, if it was easy then everyone would do it.

Leaving is easy, I would personally just get the fuck out of there.

Staying and at the same time giving yourself a fighting chance should things unravel, is complicated. Stocking up on food and water is great, but pretending your going to defend yourself in a worst case scenario with martial arts, baseball bats and clubs is stupid. If you really want to stay, do whatever is necessary to acquire guns. Just over the border in Switzerland, where 29% of citizens own guns, you can apply for a Waffenerwerbsschein which allows you to buy guns like the kalashnikov and AR15. Its easier to get a Waffenerwerbsschein in certain parts of the country then others.

@Leonard: good tips, thanks for writing this all out.

I have an extendable baton that I could keep on me when going out. That should help.

I'm not bad with a gun, though I only went to shooting range once in my life. This was the target from my first time shooting with a glock at 50 meters. I shot 4 clips and miss 3 shots.

Damn shame because if only I have a gun I would be much much better off.

Maybe the alternative market though. Theres gotta be a guy I know who know a guy.

This is the problem. What does "if things go south" mean for you, exactly?

Open jihad? Martial law? Economic collapse? Limited nuclear war? Pandemic? A domino effect of one leading to the other? In which case, which follows which and how long after?

Example. Open jihad begins, leads to martial law. Now, if you're not living near a muslim ghetto then trying to get a gun on the black market is a bad risk, considering that your personal risk level will be low as long as you keep travel to a minimum. In this case a pantry full of food and water along with basic entry fortifications will probably be adequate.

Let's look at another example.

Economic collapse, leads to open jihad, leads to NO martial law because there's no money to pay soldiers and cops.

In that case you would have to change to another pre-planned strategy. This would depend on whether you intend to stay and fight or find refuge elsewhere. If so, where will you go? How will you get there? Staying put might not be an option. If captain Achmed of the Paris ISIS branch and his merry band are closing in on your district it isn't going to matter whether you have a single shot hunting rifle or a Squad Automatic Weapon. This would be where having those friends and contacts becomes relevant, either in getting you safely out of the country or finding you a place in the resistance.

The enemy of survival is complacency and normalcy bias. People often die when they want to believe that things aren't as bad as they seem. Instead of getting out an hour early they try to escape a minute to late. But too late is too late, whether it's by a minute or a decade.

You need not only supplies but skills and contacts, but even all of that will be for nothing if you're not willing to get out before the door slams shut in your face. In the near future there will be guys sitting on a huge cache of food and weapons that get swamped by Mohammed on day one. Other resourceful guys will have nothing but the shirt on their backs when the shit hits the fan and still come out smelling like roses.

As for silver and gold, it's the option of the refugee. Ask anyone in Argentina right now. You can't eat gold or protect your family with silver. Its only benefit is that it's easily transportable and presently legal to own. Many refugees have survived where others have not by having precious metals they were able to barter with for passage to safer areas.

I've been working on my own preparation too. I can't see going way over the top like those on that show Preppers, but it's not doubt a good idea to have at the least 3-4 worth of survival stuff.

I like the crossbow idea in conjunction with having a gun -- silent, effective and reuse of arrows.

Perhaps it's been said, but Sports Authority is going out of business so they might still have some items of use at discount if you live around them.

Not for "survival" per say, but while walking around the city, traveling or whatever other activity there's an app called GoLog worth checking out. I think it's for iPhone only. You record details in regards to whatever you're doing, and set a timer. During it your location points are saved. If you don't end whatever it is you're doing by that time, an automatic text/sms showing your starting/current location and voice recordings will be sent to your contacts who you've set up in the app.

At least if some shit goes down, others can receive some information quickly to do something with it. Pretty cool, that is assuming if a meltdown occurs there will be functioning cellular towers/service.

I don't see any options but either linking up with a large community or hiding.

Hiding would probably entail going to as low a population density area as possible. Think a deep woods cabin. The flip side of that is that your isolation also makes you an attractive target if/when found.

Holing up in a relatively fireproof building is ideal. Your home is no good if you can be taken care of with a single act of arson in the middle of the night.

Common combat calibers penetrate most home walls excepting for masonry (which would usually take a few shots, depending). An option is doubling up on sandbags within the wall, or behind it.

I'd go with screwed down plywood on the inside of the windows, excepting for second story windows from which you might defend the building. Be aware that you can be shot through all windows and walls at any time, except when behind sandbags or masonry.

Reinforce your door jams so that your doors can't be broken down. They sell kits for this. Higher security locks are also not a bad idea. Medeco and Shlage are good brands.

Having capable neighbors would be a large help.

Stock up on things to barter. Soap or antibiotics would be good, non-perishable items to trade. You can buy fish antibiotics over-the-counter that are basically the same as prescription antibiotics for humans, and can be used in their stead. You can also stock neosporin or something similar.

For arms, concentrate your money on a carbine caliber weapon (300 blk, 5.56, or 7.62x39), then a .22lr rifle, then a longer range rifle (like in 6.5 Creedmore) then pistols that will be of more limited use.

Remember that you will permanently damage your hearing with the first shot of any of these, especially indoors. That's why I don't merely say go with a .308 and be done with it. That, and the fact that I'm not a fan of the jack-of-all trades approach. It's a good way to be unhappy. If you go 300 blk, and stock ammo, you can go with a 9 inch barrel and attach a suppressor. Subsonic rounds in 300BLK should roughly equal in energy to a supersonic 9mm. Then, you can switch to supersonic rounds when outdoors, still using the same weapon. 5.56 requires a much longer barrel and doesn't suppress well. A .22lr rifle with a toggle action would also make an excellent suppressed weapon for hunting.

If you don't believe me about your hearing, go to an indoor shooting range that allows rifles, rent an AK-47 or AR-15, and try to use it without hearing protection. You won't get beyond one shot, and that shot you'll deeply regret. A semi-auto shotgun would also be useful and even arguably the best for close quarters, but again the hearing issue. In the end, it comes down to money and that your survival will largely depend on community.

That's your best bet. There are a surprisingly large number of organizations that fit the ball ranging from male only fraternal clubs(e.g. Knights of Columbus) all the way down the line to shady organizations like outlaw motorcycle clubs(harder to recommend due them being embroiled in their own conflicts and membership being extremely selective).

Over here in the US groups like the VFW can be a good start. A lot of the members are older but they stick together.
