If you think eating cheap food from food stalls everyday and drinking alcohol in a club every night of the week is the ideal lifestyle..then sure go for it. But if you actually like the western lifestyle of comfort , then be aware USA is the cheapest for that.

But plenty of guys are also happy making 100k, having a clean renovated flat with 24/7 electricity and eating out once a week having a nice New York Steak and real Brooklyn Pizza( not that shitty tasting pizza served in the rest of the world) and consider that the ideal life atm. Plus they can still get a GF a point or 2 above them because of their personality and success.

As a former expat I learned that for many there is a limit to the expat dream. That explains why most come back at some point.

Personally I wouldn't go OP without a way to come back since it seems your desire isn't actually based on experience, just fantasy. When I left I was actually sent on a mission from my job(State dept-UN) so I had a way back guaranteed . I then stayed longer knowing I had a 85% chance to return to my job with the same seniority , etc(as long as I didn't become a criminal).

If you are in a conservative type job like engineering, Finance , accounting maybe you can get a transfer overseas? Those jobs actually are the ones that get sent over more often than anyone else.

But to pick a country you have little interest in simply because it is cheap is meh! Go to Detroit a few years if you want cheap living! You can eat out often and go work out cheaply. Library is free!

Thailand's an entirely different animal. There's a reason hordes of westerners come here, the quality of life is pretty damn good.

Here are the risk factors I see:
(1) fucking up my career- basically, I worry that i will wake up after a year or two in thailand and I realize I want to go back to the West, but now I've fallen off the career ladder. My industry is really conservative so it'd be tough to get back in after going expat.

The fundamental question is do you need a career in the first place? Read the book The Millionaire Fastlane. It'll open up your eyes to some next level shit.

(2) related to point (1), by fucking up the career, I feel like I'd jeopardize my chances at having a normal, conventional family life if I ever ended up wanting that (suburbs, house, wife, kids, etc)

Let's say you continue on your career track.

That can go up in smoke in the blink of an eye. You'll always be at the mercy of others to hire you, employ you, pay you, empower you to create value, etc.

Just bypass all that crap and make your own moves.

(3) related to (1), maybe it is dumb to spend down my (humble) net worth when I've been fortunate enough to start building wealth. Again, I'm worried ill wake up as a 35-year or 45-year old man and say "what the hell was I thinking?"

Don't spend it all. Spend some of it and invest the rest of it in a business of some kind.

On the other hand, I feel like I should not wait, because:
(1) the cost of living spread between the U.S. and Thailand might narrow (thailand and such is getting more expensive, so I feel like low-cost SEA won't be there if I wait too long).

There's some truth to that. Especially if you want to live like a Westerner, eat organic shmorganic foods, etc.

All the more reason to start getting rich now, so you don't have to worry about all that minutiae in 5 years.

(3) I worry that I might get stuck (fall in love like an idiot) with a western girl the longer I stay in the west (whether my current gf or some other girl sooner or later)

Come to Thailand and I promise you'll be rid of this fear forever more.

(4) I look at the 50-year old guys that did the "normal life" track and I think they're crazy for going through all the s when if they didn't buy the his, marry the girl, have the kids and buy the boat, they could have been free. Instead, they make $200k a year, but they NEED to go to work tomorrow, they NEED to smile when the client yells at them, etc.

That's very insightful and totally true.

$200k is worthless if you're mortgaging your life for a bunch of bullshit you don't need.

And it's even more worthless if you're buying shit you don't need, going to you 'high paying' job to buy said shit, and having virtually no time to enjoy your supposedly high quality of life.

And then at the whim of some company's upper management, you're out on your ass with a bunch of debt that you now have to liquidate.

Life is short, so it's too short to leave it in other people's hands.

You've got to grab that motherfucker by the ballsack, look him in the eye and say "look bitch, this is what we're going to do. We're going to get money, fuck bitches, travel the world and do a bunch of cool shit. Got it?"

What angle am I missing in this analysis?

The one where you haven't yet resolved to take your financial and work future into your own hands.

I agree with Ali and even wrote something about that in terms of living in the US and being happy here.

But, I also believe it isn't a bad thing to shock the system so to speak. The experiences of doing something that many consider drastic can be a good learning experience. I know I learned a lot about myself doing those types of things. The older you get, the harder it will be to do such things.

The only thing I strongly urge is to not take a year or two off from working. Don't do any type of "eat, pray and shit" journey. Get a plan for income before you leave and work consistently on that plan right from the start. You have 2 years to pull it off and that should be enough.

Take a year off, but have the money to live comfortably and be doing something constructive, like taking classes. So when you return to the workforce, you can show you were being constructive and not completely fucking off.

Fucking off in San Antonio
Working 60 hrs a week
Weekends off
Pulling six figures

I'm in a new science and is challenging me, and work with a great group of professionals. It's nice to be surrounded by alpha males and attractive females. I'll take this over living in a 3rd world country. The only thing missing in my life is travel, but I have the time to make this happen. I've been living here since 2 years and I can try to give you some advice.

If you are afraid of loving a western girl, etc. I can promise you that this fear will be long gone after a few weeks here. After dating Thai girls for a while, you will probably not be interested anymore in dating Western girls after seeing all the cultural differences.

The cost of living varies by region, and how frugal you are, but in general, pretty much everything is cheaper and you can expect to pay 50% less.

As for money, get a location-independant source of income. You can do stock trading, Bitcoin trading (although the market is bearish so proceed with caution), and once you're there, you can also work teaching English if you are a native speaker or if you can trick them in believing so.

Yes, it is considerably easier to get laid without paying. There are 3 categories of girls you will meet:
1) Freelancers, pros, sponsored girls. You will meet them in a bar, and 90% of tourists will only meet those girls. Stay away, they just want your money.
2) Normal girls: Those girls had 1 boyfriend or 2, sometimes study or work, and are not in the bar scene. Good lay / harem material.
3) Hi-so virgins: Those girls are marriage material, don't date them if your goal is to get laid. Proof of social circle and ties in Thailand required to date them.

I haven't read all the replies, but in case it hasn't been said: ALWAYS WEAR A CONDOM! The HIV prevalence among adults is 1.4%, so basically 1 person out of 70 has HIV. Protect yourself, always. Don't rawdog, unless you're in a stable relationship and both went to see a doctor.

Girls are better at making life choices on every plan. Even if Asian girls mature slower than their Western counterparts, girls won't get children outside of wedlock and become single moms at 20, won't usually start drugs (percentage is lower), etc.

Once you have a location-independant income and you will be staying there for a while, you won't want to leave the place.

Some good tips from both sides on here. Here is an additional thought.

Since you have some savings already. Why not keep working the job for another six months or so focusing on saving even more(Cutting back on more expenses).

During this time plan your trip to Thailand for a 3 or 4 month trial trip. When you are ready then quit your job and take the 3 or 4 month trip.

This trip will probably give you the answers you are looking for. You will discover if it is for you and if not you will still get a lifetime of good experiences and memories.

When you return you will not be too far removed from your field and can still have some funds to support yourself while you search for a new job if that's what you want. Or you can make your plans for an expat life and plan how to get income etc.

I know several people who have done this. They save up then quit their job for a 3 - 6 month overseas trip. They come back with perspective and they either change careers or search for another job when they return.

Yes, consumer items/real estate are somewhat more expensive. But factor in universal health care, cheap efficient public transport and free uni for a couple kids. That changes the equation entirely.

But yes, if you want a big truck, and eat cheap junk food while watching Seinfield all day----America is your best bet.

Almost everything the founders intended has been systematically shit on. The spirit of non interventionism is now construed as unpatriotic, the Feds have ridiculous clout, the income tax which is unconstitutional.

And culturally the country is beyond repair.

Highest incarceration rate in the world, men are second class citizens, taxes out the ass, only country to tax it's citizens abroad besides Eritrea, police state, live to work ethos, need I go on?

Two countries besides my home country. One I spent over a year and a half while the other 4 years. I have traveled to many more spending anywhere from a month to 4 months at a time.

Happiness isn't about location.

Once you get past the honeymoon stage of a new place, you start to see the reality.
