Nah, if you're a miserable person, a location change won't stop you from being a miserable person. The excitement of a new place can bring in a false sense of happiness but after some time you will see all the bad and be that miserable person you were before you left.

Just my opinion:

The longer you think about doing it, the less likely you will be doing it. You do not need a lot of money to live comfortably in Thailand, though the visa rules are getting worse and life is getting more expensive.

I know you guys frown upon teachers, but I am one, and here in Western Europe its not bad. I have a decent salary and 13 weeks off a year. Also took the opportunity to take unpaid leave for a year and travelled asia two years back. Best time of my life. I always had the idea to go abroad and teach at a international school. Not being a native teacher and considering my level of English, that probably won't happen. Having said that, I too will always have the feeling to move abroad, especially to Asia. Having been to Thailand ten times so far its a great country, especially if you have some money and can spend it over there. Personally, I'll probably stick to doing 2-3 big trips a year to Asia, but living there should be fun as well.

If I were you I would enquire about the option to take a sabbatical. Another option is to go abroad and do some ESL. All you need to be for that is a native speaker. In Thailand you will not make a lot of money but countries like Korea or Taiwan have great potential. Don't know if it is interesting for you, just putting it out there.

I agree about the mental stuff. Weather seems to bother people more if they own property and have the shovel snow or long traffic conditions due to weather.

But the excitement of new places does wear off. Life is often more pleasant as a tourist/short timer. When we got blue...we drove into Poland and stock up on shit.

Tijuana border runs back in the old days always cheered me up.... when I made it back to San Diego.

Saying that you should not consider changing your location because you can be happy everywhere in the world is like saying you don't need to go for 9s because you can still be happy banging 4s or watching porn all day long.

And just because you can move up from banging 4s to banging 9s this does not mean that you cannot walk this process in a better location while enjoying a higher quality of life.

^^^To be honest I procrastinate about moving all the time. I am not even talking about out of my city. Just moving a mile!

I really like my location. My doctors, dentists, supermarkets,main dining,subway stop 50 feet away all within walking distance. Hot girls walking by ( not allowed to touch), beach 2 miles away, JFK airport less than 10 miles away. It is pure lazy man lifestyle.

If I ever live overseas again...it would have to be as a half here and half over there commuter.

I was in your exact situation.

Twenty-six and fresh out of grad school. Great job, great girl, great life. Made good money and lived like a broke student for a year, saved a nice stack. Clear path forward to the middle class dream.

Quit the job. Left the girl. Bought a one-way ticket to Chiang Mai. Lived there three months, traveled around with some friends. Spent the next three months in India, and the six after that in Europe backpacking around and surfing in San Sebastien/Hossegor.

I would do it again in a second. Not only was it an incredible year, it also made me a much more open and adventurous person. If I hadn't taken the plunge, I would probably be in the same career, same mindset, same routine. Hell, I'd probably be pretty happy. But the question is, are you ready to say that your life is over? That you've grown into all the man you're ever going to be, you're done having adventures, and all that remains is to flip on the cruise control for the rest of your life?

Don't treat it like a vacation. Use the time to build, and grow, and figure out what sort of man you want to be. Build a healthy, balanced life, and figure out what skills you want to master to secure your ability to stay free from having to live in the US and work nine-to-five.

How much money do you have? Thailand isn't that cheap anymore.

What's your career? Can you set yourself up so you have the option of coming back to it? Is a sabbatical a possibility? More options is always better than less.

You are smart to not want to wake up 30 years old with no money, no skills, and a huge resume gap. So: don't let this happen. Don't go lay on a beach for five years. Figure out what you want to do, and then go do it.

Yeah, I have a feeling I will be doing something like that as well. Travel for 4 months out of the year but come back home for the rest.

Weather is absolutely related to happiness. I also lived in a country that has very shytty weather and high rate of suicide and depression for it. Where I am now, I am blessed with sun almost every day and it makes my mood much more laissez faire.

Regarding OP's need to move, if you honestly feel like life sucks, make contact with those who live where you want to be and do some research then move. You only live one life and I know some people who never made the move and are old miserable bastards complaining and dumping their negative energy on others due to their own fears to seize the reins while they could have.

I left shytty Toronto and I have never felt better. I have friends from there asking me when I am returning but can not provide a valid reason why I should return.

I am not a very impulsive guy but in my experience, I can feel when a place sucks and when a place rocks.

Was miserable for a sustained period of time. Left country. Then relatively happy for a sustained period of time.

It's not excitement or lack thereof that does it. It's 'constant stressors'. Things that cause you constant pain and suffering, either active or passive, and don't let up. For me this was in every area of life except 'finances' and perhaps 'weather' (minor).

By changing location to places which I culturally favoured, and which culturally favoured me, I experienced a profound and sustained sense of "relief".

I am actually sighing now as I write this. The relief is still palpable even though I left so long ago.

I think this mantra is somewhat cliched and only half true. There are indeed miserable people who would be miserable wherever they were. For these guys there is probably little hope because they are broken inside and do not possess the drive or desire to fix themselves. By their very nature I wouldn't expect many of these people to be on this forum.

Then there are those who are miserable because they are suffering from a shitty environment, which may include their shitty office job, unattractive women, cold weather, family problems and so on.

While I believe that positive thinking and meditation can help this second category, that is just dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause. All the positive thinking in the world won't make a shitty job into a good one or an obese girl into a hot bimbo.

Thus for some the answer may indeed be to move location and change their entire way of life. Moving country is high risk high return, but you only have to look examples of men on this for the success stories. My decision to go to Japan as a teenager led me to dating more attractive girls than I'd ever even met in my hometown which I should add, GREATLY increased my innate happiness. The career stuff also worked itself out with time. I am now looking to make the next step.

You only get one life and you may as well take the big risks while you are still relatively young. I say to the OP to go for it but don't look at it as a vacation. If you truly want to escape then you need to work out a new way to live and to make money. Good luck!

Hey guys, I appreciate the replies.

You may be right and I may be wrong and maybe I am speaking more in absolutes than I should.

I am just going based on my experiences and the experience of meeting expats and foreigners in my travels.

I am glad it worked out for some of you guys, though. I found it was the way I was thinking that did it for me. Concentrating on the bad stuff instead of focusing on the good. Maybe a change of location helps reset that thinking.

Good point. If for example one loves Asian girls and they live in an area that has few of them obviously a move is needed.
