Here's a new, totally different situation.

Setup: In the midst of a brutal dry spell, you find yourself doing a routine shopping trip at the local supermarket. While you're pushing your cart up one of the aisles, you see--at the other end--this girl goofing off with her girlfriend of roughly equivalent looks. In the process of joking around with her friend, this girl rides her cart down the aisle, and accidentally crashes into your cart with hers. Giggling, and a little embarrassed, she says: "I'm so sorry. I don't have insurance." For the moment, her friend is no where in sight.

With a face like that, I'd politely inform her that my policy covered uninsured motorists and continue down the boulevard.

My latest openers have all been variations on "Have you heard of..." then pick a song, or whatever. It hooks quite a lot, at least for me.

So for the last few of these, i.e. bookstores etc., "Have you heard of [book vaguely relating to the book they are reading; unless it's superlame like Twilight.]?"

Well, if I was really in Japan, and I came across these girls at the bookstore like this. I would just say...

"Konnichiwa" (which means hello in Japanese)

Then I would ask them if they spoke English, tell them I was visiting from San Francisco, and just go from there!
