I stick to it because it's cheap enough here in Gdansk, but I know forum members like bojangles have started their negotiations at 50% off with multiple hosts before picking one.

In one of my recent Airbnb negotiations, I lowered the price from $67 (already weekly discounted price) to $50. I feel like I could have done better but my trip was coming up....Always negotiate or at least try.

You can bypass airbnb and make a better deal with the landlord too. They're usually willing to do this if they're in a place with lower incomes. Just keep in mind it's against airBnB policy. Although it worked like a charm for me.

I like AirBNB. Just be prepared for a last-minute cancellation. Definitely have a back-up plan in place (e.g., a list of runner-up locations on AirBnB). On my last trip, a host cancelled my two-months old reservation just a few days before my flight. I had to really scramble and deal with the situation when I should have been packing. It was very stressful. According to this web site (previously posted by Malo), this is one of the most common criticisms of AirBNB. In the future, I will always keep a list of back-up units to minimize the need for research if a cancellation occurs. Even then, you will probably pay more for a last minute reservation.

I wonder if they have considered financially penalties to hosts that cancel like that, cancelling a reservation like that last minute is kind of ridiculous.

AirBNB does impose a penalty based on when the cancellation occurred -- but AirBNB keeps the penalty, so this really does not help the guest.
