Sony cancels the release of "The Interview"
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/so...iew-758924

Quote:"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers," said a statement from the studio.

It's publicity for a probably badly made movie.

Was it really threats or did they have some incriminating information on the executives?

A movie with Seth Rogen and James Franco being pulled is a blessing in disguise.

Hahahaha.

The United States is now such a weak, enfeebled country that it's having basic First Amendment rights taken away from threats abroad. Maybe it's time to let go of that "superpower" tag. If you can't screen a movie, you're not a superpower.

What next -- will they call for publishers recalling books?

But Sony is Japanese. So fuck em. I try hard not to give that company any of my money, I appreciate it when they publicly attach their brand to their products, it makes it easy.

RE: Sony cancels the release of "The Interview"
Maybe Kim Jong-un is more rational than we think. Hollywood makes a comedy movie where he is the target of an assassination. Could you imagine a comedy being made of the assassination of the Queen of England? Given what has happened to Saddam, Kaddafi, and other leaders, this concern isn't imaginary. Maybe he sees this as a form of predictive programming or a real threat from the United States, and he is being proactive and showing he has means to retaliate. When someone starts laughing about your death, it may be time to do something. By way of contrast, North Korea also protested the movie "Team America: World Police" which made fun of their leader. But in that case they made no threats perhaps because the movie made no threats against them.

Yale University Press are still the champs in my book, for refusing to print the Muhammad cartoons in an academic book about the response to the cartoons.

These billion dollar companies only have balls when they know a judge and a lawyer on the payroll. A bunch of Korean kids do a hack and threaten to blow up things - all they're left with is begging on their knees for mercy.

It's either a publicity stunt or the hackers have dirt on the execs. No way they're going to lose millions on idle threats.

I agree with the above poster about the movie being in bad taste. It's a funny idea but if someone made a film about killing any other non-fictional head of state there would be hell to pay.

RE: Sony cancels the release of "The Interview"
Sony is not $tupid. I'm assuming they did a lot of polling to cancel the premiere but the media doesn't cover the financial aspect of this.

It could have gone two ways: the opening would break new attendance records or people would be too scared to show up out of fear of a terrorist attack.

I suspect they polled a bunch of people and found that people were hesitant to go with the terrorist-hysteria that's everywhere now.

They'll release it at a later date when the hysteria has died down and blow it out of the park with everyone wanting to see what made N Korea so mad.

Now that they've publicly announced their decision, they should keep their word and not release this. The chances that an Aurora shooting or theater bombing will skyrocket now that they've injected drama into this.

Like most people, I can't stand the fact that the US spends $trillions getting involved in conflict after conflict in the Middle East.

That said, I would gladly see my hard earned tax dollars go toward annihilating everyone running the show over in North Korea, and liberating their ridiculously appalling concentration camps.

RE: Sony cancels the release of "The Interview"
Just to clear a few things...

Sony was pretty much forced to "cancel" the release of the film because all the main exhibitors(the theaters) "postponed" the Christmas release until further notice. Sony's only option was a digital release of the film at that point.

I am sure that they have an insurance policy with the exhibitor which they would recoup marketing expenses. P&A(the advertising of a film) for a wide domestic release is at least 45 million$-for summer blockbusters it can go up to 100 mill. So...no this is not a publicity stunt, all the major players are losers here.

Also..."Sony Pictures" is an american Distributor based in LA. So this is an attack on an American Studio(one of the largest distributors)- not an attack on a Japanese company.

So freedom of speech should only apply to the things you like?

North Korea should be free to threaten Americans, as long as they're a "douchebag"?

I think Roger and Franco are hilarious. I laughed my ass off watching This Is The End. Even if you think they are not funny and not talented, it's still a shame that free speech is bending over backwards for terrorist threats. Such a shame...
