RE: Rolling Stone: Brutal Rape at UVA
Seems like somebody else has been doing some actual journalism. [WaPo]
Quote:A group of Jackie’s close friends, who are sex assault awareness advocates at U-Va., said they believe something traumatic happened to Jackie but have come to doubt her account. They said details have changed over time, and they have not been able to verify key points of the story in recent days. A name of an alleged attacker that Jackie provided to them for the first time this week, for example, turned out to be similar to the name of a student who belongs to a different fraternity, and no one by that name has been a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
Reached by phone, that man, a U-Va. graduate, said Friday that he did work at the Aquatic Fitness Center and was familiar with Jackie’s name. He said, however, that he had never met Jackie in person and had never taken her on a date. He also confirmed that he was not a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

RE: Rolling Stone: Brutal Rape at UVA
This is the beginning of the end of this -- but not yet the end. Now is the time to dig deeper and not let anyone off the hook.
RS is -- of course -- trying to shift all the blame to Jackie. But Rolling Stone and Sabrina Rubin Erdely were willing and indeed eager collaborators in spreading Jackie's lies and turning them into a piece of propaganda that has damaged many lives and reputations.
This initial retraction from Rolling Stone is not close to being enough. Rolling Stone and Sabrina Rubin Erdely must be held fully accountable; and it's more important than ever for all the facts to come to light. This needs to be pursued until all the lies, evasions, and monstrous bad faith of everyone involved are unraveled and made fully public.

RE: Rolling Stone: Brutal Rape at UVA
I feel vindicated, and I respect Rolling Stone for owning up to what they said and apologizing for their lapses in judgment. I hope this story has not make it harder for legitimate victims of rape to seek justice. I also wish to say a prayer for Jackie; whatever happened or did not happen to her, she seems to be suffering legitimate pain and I sincerely wish that she can find peace and happiness.
Yes, this was a false rape accusation. And the fact it became so viral makes it harder for legitimate rapists, such as serial rapist Jeffrey Marsalis, to be brought to justice. For rapists to be brought to justice, and for the sake of finding the truth, legitimate questions should never be dodged. Women should be taught to handle rape responsibly. Instead of dating the rapist again (such as what many of Marsalis' victims did), or waiting months or years before coming forward, women need to be taught to immediately contact the police. Police departments need to take rape accusations seriously, and not dismiss them like they did with Sara Reedy.
We have, as a society, made a lot of progress reducing rape. Stories like Erdley's threaten to destroy that progress and cause fewer legitimate rape victims to be taken seriously.
I'm proud to be a part of a forum that called out A Rape on Campus for being a lie long before anyone else questioned the story.

More from the WaPo piece:
Quote:A lawyer for the University of Virginia fraternity whose members were accused of a brutal gang rape said Friday that the organization will release a statement rebutting the claims printed in a Rolling Stone article about the incident. Several of the woman’s close friends and campus sex assault awareness advocates expressed doubt about the published account, and the magazine’s editors also apologized to readers for discrepancies in the story.
Officials close to the fraternity said that the statement will indicate that Phi Kappa Psi did not host a party on Sept. 28, 2012, the night that a university student named Jackie alleges she was invited to a date party, lured into an upstairs room and was then ambushed and gang-raped by seven men who were rushing the fraternity.
The officials also said that no members of the fraternity were employed at the university’s Aquatic Fitness Center during that time frame — a detail Jackie provided in her account to Rolling Stone and in interviews with The Washington Post — and that no member of the house matches the description detailed in the Rolling Stone account.
The attorney, Ben Warthen, who has represented Phi Kappa Psi, said the statement would come out Friday afternoon. He declined to comment further.
Capt. Gary Pleasants of the Charlottesville police department said that detectives are looking into the allegations at the request of the university but declined to comment on the status of that investigation.
Phi Psi has done their due diligence -- they would not have released such a statement unless they were absolutely certain it was correct in every detail.
As many of us believed from the beginning, Jackie's story appears to be a fabrication from beginning to end.
EDIT:
More:
Quote:Earlier this week, Jackie revealed to friends for the first time the full name of her alleged attacker, a name she had never disclosed to anyone. But after looking into that person’s background, the group that had been among her closest supporters quickly began to raise suspicions about her account. The friends determined that the student that Jackie had named was not a member of Phi Kappa Psi and that other details about his background did not match up with information Jackie had disclosed earlier about her perpetrator.
The Post determined that the student Jackie named is not a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

ANNA MERLAN TEARS SO DELICIOUS
She goes on to say:
Quote:Saddest of all, this is bad in ways that have far-reaching social consequences: we've just begun, as a society, to not immediately and harshly question a woman who says she was raped. We've just begun to talk about campus sexual assault — which is, to be clear, still a very real problem at UVA and across the country.
Yeah it's just SO SAD that we were starting to convict men based on ZERO EVIDENCE and now it's going to be even tougher to do that.

RE: Rolling Stone: Brutal Rape at UVA
Some of the worst people in the world -- no exaggeration -- are now stunned and enraged; and this makes it a great day.
They need to be buried and humiliated and exposed for the liars and ruthless ideological henchmen that they are. But not through any overreach or gloating on our part; our best weapon, as always, is the truth. Facts, facts and more facts -- let them all come out. Every detail should be pursued to the bitter end; both details about Jackie's fantastical lies, and about Rolling Stone's and Rubin Erdely's reportorial malpractice in lustily spreading these lies as gospel truth and then prevaricating and running for cover as the lies unraveled.
Let every last detail about this shameless hoax come out and be known.

They wouldn't have brought the scrutiny hammer down so hard if they hadn't wanted this harrowing and brutal tale shoved in everyone's faces so much at the beginning. Reap what you sow motherfuckers. God this is a good day.
Yes: they overreached because they became drunk with their own success; they had become convinced that no lie was far-fetched enough to be treated as anything but gospel truth; as long as "rape" was involved, innocence, as Alan Dershowitz put it, was no defense.
They keep canting about how women are "dehumanized" or "objectified" but here is the truth: no lives could possibly be more meaningless to these people than the lives of the Phi Psi fraternity members that were so gravely affected by this hoax. They are just "frat bros" ( the way they were referred to in headlines of major media articles!) -- a class of people apparently so vile that their fates and indeed their very humanity are of no import whatsoever. To these people, "frat bros" are the new Kulaks, a subhuman enemy class that must be fought by any means necessary, and facts be damned.
Well, they were wrong. The truth still matters, thank God -- and this can and should be a watershed event it making it matter more going forward.

RE: Rolling Stone: Brutal Rape at UVA
What needs to be said:
It's a lucky thing no one decided to play vigilante and torch the Phi Kappa Psi house or beat the hell out of some of the members.
In Baltimore last month, a crowd beat a man to death when a woman started screaming "he raped me!" because she claimed he assaulted her friend. This didn't get much mainstream media play, but it was posted on the forum.
By the way, the SJW point of view will be "This case might be made up, but we still have rape culture, patriarchy, male spaces (etc.), so we need to carry on and fight blah blah blah."
At least the Jezebel writer issued an apology, which is more than anyone did with the Duke case. So that's progress.
