In this day and age where big movies regularly pull 100 mil plus on their opening weekends (Deadpool, mentioned in this thread, did 130 in its first weekend...while costing a third to make and being an R rating), 75 million in its first WEEK is approaching flop territory.

I forget if this was already pointed out here, or somewhere else, but -

They didn't just make a bad sequel, or a bad remake; they butt-fucked the franchise. They generated so much ill will with this "Screw you, fanboy!" remake, that if they even hint at touching it again in the next ten years there'll be an outcry.

Heck, I would even expect plenty of bad press if they tried to do a "three box set" release of the Ghostbusters films.

This is the worst Hollywood disaster in living memory; far worse than Waterworld. I can't wait to watch the fallout. Between this, Brexit, and Trump's speech tonight, I'm walking around with a 24/7 priapism.

Eh, they will all be fine. Kevin Costner continued to make movies after Waterworld. Billy Crudup survived the Watchmen. Faig will not need a 50M budget to make shitty rom coms that women love.

The fact that liberals think she's the height of comedy just shows how many secretly enjoy minorities making asses of themselves especially on mainstream t.v. I'm not politically correct at all but it's hard for me to believe that most black people like someone like this. She's like the black version of Ken Jeong.

It's not even satire or making a social point like Dave Chappelle or insightful stuff like Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy used to do.

She's a living breathing minstrel show.

She is nowhere close to funny. She probably let herself be a prop for 100 Satanic Rituals. I think she is too ugly for a producer to want a blow job from.

Extremely few women are actually funny. For black women the funniest ones are (in order):

Wanda Sykes
Sommore*
Monique*
Sheryl Underwood
Luenell Campbell
Aisha Tyler

*You could flip Sommore with Monique

All in that order. I may have missed a couple somewhere, but Leslie Jones is not even close to being on that short list. They all have various levels of success because it always comes down to mainstream appeal (i.e how much of a walking stereotype are you).

Monique wins that one hands down. Only after coming out of the closet or whatever, did she seem to fall off the Earth. Same goes for Wanda. She was gay when that was not okay to be publicly and it probably ruined her career. Say what you want about their political views, Wanda and Monique are very technically sound on comedy techniques. Wanda was a black version of Ellen Degeneres. Monique fit the stereotype for a loud fat black woman who could make you laugh.

Sheryl and Luenell are just notorious stand up queens and probably too Rated R for most movie and TV stuff. Sommore is not as nasty, but she is not as extroverted and much of a crazy character, just a very funny person. Aisha Tyler has always been a little bit too pretty of a black woman to be big in comedy. She also had the misfortune of being her funniest during the age of Wanda and Monique hogging the good stuff.

Had Monique been casted for that role instead of Leslie Jones, she would have made them change several jokes on that script and that movie would not have been as big a dumpster fire. People are not necessarily tired of Monique, but when you put a talentless hack in place of 5-7 known queens of their industry, you risk a major flop in the jokes/comedy dept. Alot of people don't realize but most heavyweights in comedy, male or female, improv or make script adjustments and recommendations while filming. Jones was SNL. Everyone knows that SNL is all about the SNL writers, not so much the comedians in it.

This movie shows that Jones is completely unfit comedy wise for a major film. I have watched her on stand up a few times before and I thought she sucked. She was a wanna be Sommore mixed with Monique. Nothing unique about her style wise. She came off as very boring and talked about race too much (Yawn). She probably is better reading off scripts than being actually funny. If that is the case, they fucked her on this movie and she had no chance at all.

I saw Leslie Jones live back in the day (over 10 yrs ago) with Tracy Morgan headlining. Her comedy act was pretty funny. Then saw a couple of times on TV on BET. Then she disappeared. Now all of a sudden, she's on SNL and Ghostbusters. She's not too funny now, just loud and obnoxious. I usually agree with Kai, but Wanda Sykes isn't funny. Her act sucked. She benefits from who she knows and a funny voice/delivery not her material. When I saw her live, everyone left disappointed.

Wanda had her own TV show for a while because she was very funny at the time. Wanda used to work with Chris Rock on his TV show and Larry David on his Curb Your Enthusiasm show. Jones cannot claim anything like that. Monique was on that Parkers show in a lead role for years and is one of the Original Queens of Comedy herself. Again, Jones cannot claim anything like that.

None of these women are anywhere near as funny as any male comedian in their Top 50, but if we are ranking funny black women, Old School Wanda Sykes trumps pretty much all of them. You will have to list alot more examples or something to shoot that down. Wanda differs from the other black women because she had waaay more crossover appeal. She wasn't very hood or ghetto. She was more like a female version of Paul Mooney.

Wanda Sykes was hilarious in her prime and she is like a lot of trailblazers of the past who you see today and ask yourself "What's the big deal?"

She was tight, and a good joke writer, and an original voice. All of this is from memory, by the way, because I don't want to be influenced by Youtube and stick with what stayed in my mind about her.

She was well respected by mainstream comics in a time when hardly any women were, and even though being black and being female are part of who she is, she didn't use identity as a crutch to get virtue laughs, she had a voice no one else had, I mean you could feel it, and when you saw her onstage, you could relax and feel like you were in good hands, and that is something that is rare even in male comics.

You had to pay your dues back then on the road and she was like the bands of the seventies and eighties, cutting their teeth for years before anyone ever heard of them.

With Star Trek Beyond out now. This film will most likely not or barely make back the $150 million budget cementing this film as a flop.

I finally saw this movie tonight and it's not a good movie with barely a few scenes that made me laugh mainly from Chris Hemsworth. Kate McKinnon's character was more cringeworthy than the funny, and it was a mess plotwise with terrible cheap looking CGI, and an awful green screen ending.

Box Office Mojo has estimates for Friday's numbers and according to them Ghostbusters has slipped to 5th place. The estimate total for Friday was only $6 million and puts the film at $71 million total in the US. They will be lucky to reach $150 million domestic and foreign. Remember, they said themselves they need $400 to $500 million to be break even. Congratulations Sony, you dun' goofed again.

Most foreign markets are not in yet. They may make 50-70 mio. there with luck. 100-130 mio. in US. 150-200 mio. Net loss 100-200 mio. $.

If Hollywood does more feminist masterpieces like that, then the world's trillionaires will stop funding it - even they don't want to burn money. For 200 mio. $ you could have taken a lot of dumps on Tagthesponsor-bunnies or funded another 20 BlackLivesMatter riots.

I must say I'm surprised it's earned this much in it's second week :

Domestic: $86,856,739 70.7%
+ Foreign: $36,000,000 29.3%
= Worldwide: $122,856,739

Plus, it may go on to recoup it's production budget in it's third week at this rate.
However..., look at that foreign figure compared to U.S. figure.
It's actually done damn well in the U.S., yet no where else.
The rest of the world doesn't really care nor can relate to aggressive, snarky women.

Also, the drop from the 1st weekend to the 2nd : -53.1%.
Ouch.
Oh & it lost out to 'Secret Life Of Pets' for a 2nd week. Heh.

Not really. The studio only sees about half of the box office return - that's why Feig is saying they need $4-500 million.

I'd guess they'd need 600+ to earn a sequel considering the weak toy sales. If toy sales were higher, they could earn a sequel without breaking even but that's rare.

Yes indeed, there's no way this film turns a profit any time soon, if at all.

They seemed to have curbed the marketing costs shortly after the 1st trailer failed.
Then they went full retard & doubled down on marketing & promotion to fight all the trolls.
Forgetting that trolls don't expend any revenue, & even if they did. The trolls don't have specific requirements about what dictates success or not.
Trolls enjoy it for what it is.
