Its not a control thing, but im not a fat fuck that needs to eat food past 8pm at night when I already had dinner.

This is one where you need to feel out the vibe of the woman early on. If it feels right, go for it, if not don't but whatever you don't come off as a penny pincher or cheapskate. It really comes down to if buying one will interfere or help the bang. You also need to suss out the free-ride chicks who are looking to score free food. My go to is to order a round of waters while we talk about drinks we enjoy, and go from there. Case (s)in point;

A. Met the girl at the venue and ordered two waters for us. Within 5 minutes she has dropped that she dates frequently from online and enjoys the free meals and sometimes kisses the guys afterwards but mostly does not even if they're attractive but will not sleep with any of the guys until they've taken her out numerous times and met her friends and ordered drinks for all of them. She was about 15 pounds heavier than her profile pic, mid 30's. When the waiter arrived, I stood up, thanked her for her honesty, ordered a Guinness for me and said, " The lady can have whatever she wishes but I will not be paying, I'll be at the bar". I walked away from the table and over to the bar. She dressed me down at the bar and I simply told her she wasn't worth the investment she thought she was. The other men and I at the bar had a good laugh after she left.

B. Same venue, girl shows up in a skirt and heels, late 20's. I order a round of waters and we find out Guinness is both of our favored drinks .She compliments me on my clothes and says something along the lines of its nice to meet a gentleman. After about 3 rounds, I lean in and kiss her. She smiles and says Its nice to meet a man who is take charge. She casually mentions that she likes the pita with cheese/artichoke dip. I joke that I knew something was wrong with her but I wave the server over and order it. We leave for my place shortly thereafter. Total spent, maybe $60 with tip. She ended up in my regular rotation and she was genuinely fun to be around.

For me, feeling out the vibe of the woman is most important than any do/do not rule.

I usually order apps for myself anyway. In fact, I'll pick a place to eat for the date so I can order apps for myself. 50/50 the girl orders apps too.

If I spend $10-12 on an app I don't sweat it. If I'm out with my male friends I spend that much+ on their shit anyway cause most of them are stingy bastards. And I prefer the company of a cute girl anyway so I'm not going to complain about buying her an app.

I don't do food on a first date as a rule. Make a point to stop off before and get enough cash to cover drinks rather than paying by credit card. Order the first round, make sure you smile and say "first round's on me" and toss a $20 on the bar when the drinks arrive so the bartender doesn't even have to ask about opening a tab. This typically makes more clear the expectation that she gets the second round, and not having a tab avoids that awkward moment closing out the tab where 25 years of you-go-girl independent woman conditioning runs up against her princess syndrome.

To be clear, I don't push the point and come off cheap - if her purse does a disappearing act for the second round it's simply a data point on how worthwhile she is for the long term and I'm more likely to file her as a short term prospect. Of course you have to calibrate for your respective life situations, foreign girls, whatever. As I've dated younger girls I'm more open to picking up the first several rounds without it being as much of a red flag. Needless to say a 22 year old fresh out of college offering to pick up the second round cheerfully is a big positive sign.

Obviously the way you set up dates will play into it. I schedule any first date at 8pm or later and make sure to invite the girl out to a bar "for drinks" and eat beforehand. Jesus christ.....how are some of you guys misreading this thread? It's not a fucking money issue. The issue is i'm asking them out for drinks not dinner. These are not women I am dating. They are women I am going out for the first time with so I don't care to eat food with them, I want to have a few drinks and socialize with them. I roomed with 2 girls back in the 90's who would go out every weekend with just enough cab fare to the club. They didn't have to pay to get in, for what they ate and drank, or to get home, even in a walk of shame situation. It was just assumed guys would provide, and they always did.

I wouldn't buy random girls at the bar drinks or food. That gets you nowhere. A drink date is a girl you met previously, chatted a few times over phone or text and agreed to meet for drinks.
