Microsoft gave us the full tech specs of the machine. The central processor (CPU) has eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz. The graphics processor (GPU) has 40 customised compute units clocked at 1172MHz - a very high clock speed for a console - and it does achieve Microsoft's stated six-teraflop performance figure. There's 12GB of GDDR5 RAM, with a memory bandwidth of 326GB/s. There's a faster 1TB 2.5-inch hard drive, and a UHD Blu-ray drive. OK, so the CPU is about 30 per cent faster than the Xbox One's. The GPU is 4.6 times more powerful than Xbox One's. What matters just as much, though, is the huge amount of very fast memory available. Even with 4GB reserved for the system, games have a whole 8GB to play with, up from 5GB of much slower memory on Xbox One. That means fast streaming of very high-quality art assets, which will really help at the 4K ultra HD resolutions that Microsoft is gunning for.

So it's as powerful as they said it would be? As powerful as everyone hoped?

Pretty much, yeah. Some were hoping to see next-gen CPU technology in there, but that was never likely, given Microsoft's mandated compatibility with all existing Xbox One software. On the CPU side, what we have is a more modest evolution of the Xbox One unit. But the GPU is a beast. It's very, very fast."

How did it do?

Smashed it. At the same graphics quality settings as Xbox One, the demo ran at a full 4K resolution, at a perfect 60 frames per second. For Xbox One to do this at a standard HD resolution of 1080p uses about 90 per cent of that console's power. Scorpio was only using 60-70 per cent of its resources to run this demo. The graphics settings were then ramped up to the equivalent of the ultra settings on the PC game Forza Motorsport Apex, and Scorpio still didn't break a sweat.

So that means...

Scorpio potentially has enough power not just to run Xbox One games at 4K resolution at the same frame rate - it's got power to spare on improving their looks further, with higher quality graphics settings, smoother frame rates, and more.

What's the catch?

Microsoft didn't choose the Forza engine to demo to us by accident. It's one of the best optimised, best performing game engines out there. Results on other game engines can and will vary.

Ah, shit. I'm going off Team Yen and onto Team Triss. Okay, she still has that wrinkled brow issue, and she probably is a deceptive bitch ...

... but fuck, man, she was literally willing to have her fingernails torn out just so I could get a chance to get information on where Dandelion is. (Of course I fucked it up by being stupid enough to cast Axii in the middle of a base of witch hunters, thus necessitating a general slaughter, but it's the thought that counts).

And then they had to take me to a garden party where she proved to look fucking fine in a dress, then got drunk as well. Had to take that kiss in the maze under the fireworks, you just can't miss opportunities like that. Fuckit.

I also found it exceedingly satisfying to put a sword through Whoreson Junior.

Paracelsus, since you love Witcher 3 so much, you may be interested in my current hobby project. I am making two swords from the Witcher 3 game. While i haven't played 3rd installment in the series, I am very familiar with lore, first two games and books, so I decided to make one "silver" and one "steel" sword from the Witcher 3. They will not be 100% same as from game, but they will be really similar.

I will even put pictures in that thread about "manly thing you did today" as I progress.

"Steel" sword will be one of the Ursine school swords, that one with the S shaped crossguard. "Silver" sword will be that one that has lightning bolt shaped quillons on the crossguard. I believe you know what I mean.

Anyone got some active console PvP shooters they can recommend? I've been trying Battlefield 1 again the last couple of days after a very long break (never made it to more than rank 14 before) and it's just been so constantly punishing that the moments of fun are just too far and few between. I was never very good but could at least usually end up somewhere around the middle of the scoreboard - which I can still do if I do nothing but go for the objectives, but ending up with something like a 0.2 kd ratio along the way and getting constantly butchered from any and every angle is just not entertaining enough.

Perhaps the player based got better on average (many causual players like me gone perhaps), and it's also now very difficult to find games in the new operations mode (haven't managed it at all yet with the new DLC maps) and I think I fared better in those large more focused skirmishes than the all-over-the-map conquest mode that everyone is back to playing again now like the previous BF games.

Anyone ever picked up CoD Infinite Warfare? Any good?
I tried the very beginning of the recent Titanfall 2 demo, but only briefly and only singleplayer. Definitely a feel to the controls and movement I was not very comfortable with at all, but could be over time perhaps.

Or maybe I should just put a pin in multiplayer until Destiny 2 in September.

Witcher 3: tidying up in Novigrad before heading to Skellige. Banged Triss, Main Quests all done, Level 21, there's still a smattering of question marks left mostly off in the north to north east of the countryside, but when scouting them they're all turning up as level 30+, red skull opponents, so rather than waste my time I'm heading to the islands.

Absent those question marks, I'm pretty overpowered for Velen right now. If you're consistent on the flowerpicking and the looting -- and in particular picking up florens wherever you go and stopping by Vivaldi's bank -- it's difficult not to be completely loaded and regularly render merchants bankrupt with all the random crap you can haul around with you and sell. I'm carrying about 5k in gold right now, and that's after building expensive shit like witcher armour. I've got something like 130 bottles of Dwarven Spirit in the inventory. Wish I had as much fucking White Gull so I could actually finish off some of these fucking decoctions. Blue and Green mutagens out the ass, game doesn't seem to want to give me reds.

Enhanced Black Blood is just hilarious when you're going up against necrophages or vampires, they literally walk up to you and start bleeding. Most of the time I'm taking Griffin Decoction, Petri's Philter, Thunderbolt, but the real workhorses in this game are the oils: you literally have one for every fucking monster out there. Still using Quen, but I'm using Aard and Axii more in combat than I expected. Rocking the muscle shirt School of the Cat armour and swords and got all the enhanced Cat School gear built even if I can't use it just yet. Only exception to the bog-standard: Teigr, a Witcher gear, Cat School sword you pick up during Where The Wolf and the Cat Play mission, aka The Beast of Honorton, which is one of the more memorable Witcher contracts I've had. Serious moral questions asked in that one, it was a superb mission, don't miss that one. The Witcher contracts have been pretty consistent and atmospheric, Lord of the Wood was one of the best. Also finished up the Cabaret side quest which was funny at some points, and the Carnal Sins mission was an atmospheric "track the serial killer" mission as well. Looking forward to Skellige.

First landing in Skellige.

I found myself on a rocky shore, gazing at stark monoliths rising in the distance so huge, so unworked, that they seemed cut with God's knife.

And then the violin and the singing from the main theme just kicked in.

Installed Mass Erect Andromeda last night.

Put in an hour and a half, I knew I was going to be dissapointed but damn they really messed this up beyond belief.

Graphically it can look amazing but the story and flow of everything feels very off.

The patch does make it somewhat bearable but it can't save the game from it's terrible writing.

Side note:

Banged a plate to last night and this came on shuffle, would recommend.

I'm trying my best to rein in my OCD when it comes to hoovering up everything in the world and travelling to multiple locations just to get rid of it all, but I'm at level 14 and I already have 12k. I don't know why I'm so cheap in these games. It's like I expect the developer to hand me a cheque for my balance at the end of the game.

Anyhow, I only just realised a couple of levels back that all your alchemical creations respawn whenever you meditate and that you only have to make them once.

Derp! I could have saved myself a lot of grief if I'd been using decoctions, bombs and oils up to this point.

I just did the secondary quest where you fight Red the werewolf. I was annoyed that I couldn't confront the guy she'd been buying info from. Maybe he runs for the hills.

Presently I'm not bothering to use any signs except Quen because apart from the fact that it's by far the best, I'm not really fond of how combat gets lagged when you want to choose a different sign. It breaks the immersion for me. In any case, Quen is just plain busted. I'm wandering over the map routinely killing treasure guardians 6 or more levels above me with without much drama. Alt sign when health gets low and normal sign at all other times. It gets hard to die unless you catch a severe poison or bleeding effect.

Continue for a while if you can bear it. While I've also temporarily lost the urge to continue further (but I'm jumping a little back and forth between games in general these last two weeks) I actually enjoyed a good chunk of the maybe 12-15 hours I've spent in Andromeda so far.

While human faces and animation continues to be sub par (or worse) and some gameplay aspect either are or become too boring (I enjoyed driving around planets in the beginning between quests and other points of interests, now I'm a little fed up with it - although I now have several on foot planets or areas available I can go through before going back to a large planet with driving), the combat is quite enjoyable and a lot of the writing - while mostly lighter in tone than the original trilogy and certainly with some tremendously stupid lines here and there - is not bad at all. Not brilliant certainly, but like a pretty good sci-fi TV series season.

I also skip most small side quests because I know that's probably just going to make me fed up with the game much faster than need be. Still plenty of content just doing the story and the major character story quests etc.

Possibly one of the most emotional moments I've had in the game, and it was a nothing...

Travelled northwest of Kaer Muine, on the slopes of a snow-covered mountain. There was a question mark I wanted to look at. I slid down the mountain again and again, couldn't find a path up ...

And then I found it. A way up. Overhead, the sky had darkened to black. Rain was falling. I felt the cold, even if I knew Geralt didn't. He vaulted a gap, and then up a small rise. To a stony outcrop looking over the sea, the snow, and the grey sky all about. Thunder rolled, and lightning crashed across the mountaintops. It was evening, and the moon was nothing but a haze of silver and gold on the mountain's shoulder. The wind howled. And Geralt knelt before the Place of Power he'd found, drawing from its strength. All while "The Fields of Ard Skellige" played sadly over the scene, the middle of a storm, flares of light breaking the darkness.

I don't know what it was, but I stood from the Place of Power and I looked out and I had a tear in my eye. I haven't seen something so beautiful in a long, long time as standing up there in the middle of the storm, looking over a dark sea.

...and yes, I know there's a cave with three farting rock trolls right underneath, shut up.

I like the amount of customization they allow for weapons and armor pieces. The writing is still throwing me off and the fact that so far every main character has been a woman (I want a Turian male on my team)

Also what's up with that planet scanning / exploring. Is there an option later so you can skip the 60 seconds travel between each to see a small description and check it off?

Story mode in The Long Dark is finally coming out in three weeks, although I'm afraid it might be SJWy given the developer is a filthy Canadian and the girl survivor's inventory paper doll doesn't have a nice rack.

I haven't played after the latest update (the one I've seen in videos also made eyes marginally more lifelike), but I seem to remember from the patch notes that they added an option to turn off those long travel animations during scanning, because everyone was complaining about them.

If you're playing a "free" version on PC I have no idea if you'll be able to update. I suspect they will be releasing several patches within the first couple of months to fix some of the worst issues. If you're the patient type I'm sure you'll have at least a slightly better experience if you wait for a few more patches.

You get a pretty cool male Krogan squad mate early in the game (without spoiling too much it sounds like you might not be very far from that point).
There's also a male squad mate from one of the new species a little later. Not as much fun as the Krogan but still better than the Lenny Kravitz knock-off you get in the beginning.
So half of the companions are male. I kind of like the new Asari companion too, and Cora is not as bad as I initially thought she would be, although she still looks like a lesbian so I refused the option to flirt with her.

Earned my Faroe flag. Jutta an Dimon, retrieved a sword for her to play with, then gave her another sword to play with. Nice lass, doesn't get out much, not too experienced in the hairstyle or makeup department but has a nice set of tits for Skellige, doesn't talk to many guys, would take on rotation if option was available.

Also reunited with Yennefer over King Bran's funeral voyage, and was immediately glad I'd gone Team Triss. Bitch.
