Anthem is a new game by Bioware (the studio that made Mass Effect 1-3, not the one that made Andromeda) that looks badass:

I've stopped playing video games for the most part, but I may have to pick this one up when it comes out.
Repo 路 2017-06-12 17:41:00 路 #2402
Shit I was hoping Anthem would be story driven like Mass Effect, and not a soulless MMO like Destiny. Looks like the kind of game I would have fun with for a few hours but then quit because of the grind and xp chase. I prefer games where you play to drive the story forward, rather than collect xp and hope for good random weapon drops.

Yeah, we'll have to see how it ends up. Going to Fallout 4 from New Vegas was a significant downgrade in my opinion. I hope BioWare doesn't do the same corner cutting with the story in order to expand the gameplay like Bethesda did.

Still, I think the whole concept of flying robot super-suits in some sort of lush forest post apocalyptic open world sounds cool to me.

I was disappointed with Anthem's MMO approach as well. I get the feeling it's going to be Biowares solution to Titanfall and The Division.
Repo 路 2017-06-13 22:03:00 路 #2406
Jokes on them then, The Division doesn't need a solution, it fell off by itself.
Leonard D Neubache 路 2017-06-13 23:04:00 路 #2407
I was super psyched about that game.

Then I watched a common looking thug with a baseball bat run up to a guy with an assault rifle while taking 50 bullets in the chest "because of the level difference" before killing the rifle guy with one swing and I thought...

...nope.

A series about Witcher will cost a lot with the CGI it demands.

Netflix will not spend the required cash for high quality magic and monsters in every episode. The other big way they will fuck up is casting. GOT has god-tier casting. The Witcher Series is massively dependent on the same quality but will not get it.
Repo 路 2017-06-14 14:50:00 路 #2409
The thing is the Witcher doesn't need to have big battles like GOT, which is where most of the CGI budget goes. Some monsters could be done with costumes, and also a Witcher show won't require as large a cast as GOT. I'm still not going to hold my breath though.
sterling_archer 路 2017-06-14 15:04:00 路 #2410
Exactly Repo and these are the thing that could make the project a lot cheaper than the GOT.

I'm trying to keep my head in the sand on this situation. I know netflix will fuck it up.

It depends how pretty they want it to look.

Doctor Who has a relatively low budget but lots of monsters.

Besides, they did a Polish low budget Witcher series before, (called the Hexer) and it seemed to work well.

Here's some more gameplay footage from RS2: Vietnam, looks pretty fun, don't know if I'll get it since I got RS1 but never had time to play it much.

They called it the Hexer because that's the more theoretically accurate translation of Wiedzmin, the original name of the Witcher in Polish. And that low budget Witcher series has taken a lot of flak over time, partly because of shit acting, partly because of, well, low budget.

Doctor Who does have a pretty fucking low budget, but that's arguably part of its charm. (The Doctor Who movie with McGann as the Eighth Doctor had a massive and absolutely gorgeous TARDIS set, but it was just too corporate and US-ified.) It's basically a planet-of-the-week costume drama with mostly practical effects like the original run of Star Trek was, and it shows ... but you buy it because typically they pick a Doctor who wet girls' panties (See: Nine, Ten, and Eleven) or one who rules over the show by sheer force of personality (see: the current iteration and the Fourth Doctor).

Witcher is going to be a different beast again. I agree with Latinopan, GOT has incredibly good casting (the first season had fucking Sean Bean for Christ's sake; Charles Dance and Diana Rigg wouldn't have come cheap either) and it doesn't have the persistent, common magic that the Witcher setting has, which means GOT's special effects bill is going to be less than that of a Witcher series. If you think back, there hasn't been any blasty magic thrown around throughout GOT, not one obvious Gandalf/Merlin type shitting fireballs out his arse. Compare that to the Witcher where Geralt himself can perform low level magic and where there's at least four or five women (of whom roughly 50% or more he has personally fucked) who are demigods of magical power. To say nothing of the Wild Hunt.

My main hope for Netflix!Witcher is that they don't just try to clone GOT's approach, that they instead understand what I think is the Witcher's real genre: horror. Some of the most effective storylines in Witcher 3 are where you deal with Lovecraftian horrors like the Ladies of the Wood, which in turn are drawn from Slavic/Polish Baba Yaga myths. There's no real ultimate win against such forces, only pyrrhic ones: consider how the Family Matters quest ultimately turns out - someone winds up dying no matter what you do, and in one of these cases, an entire village gets consumed. The Witcher is more horror than fantasy: hell, insofar as there's a Chosen One in the series, it's Ciri, not you - Geralt at best is a supporting character in Ciri's story if you interpret the Witcher as high fantasy. The game, at least, works best when you're on Witcher contracts, especially the individual nightwraiths like Jenny o' the Woods and similar - where you get a good dose of tragedy and sadness in the mix.

Is the game like the books? Supposedly they are doing it after the books, not the game.

Games are supposed to be sequel and/or parallel to the events in the books.

There will be Wolfenstein 2? Nice!

TravelerKai 路 2017-06-16 12:09:00 路 #2422
All the newer Wolfenstein's suck badly (story wise) compared to Return to Castle Wolfenstein or the original versions of Wolfenstein 3D. Return to Castle Wolfenstein had incredible music. The intro was amazing. I still listen to it sometimes.

They don't make video game music like this anymore at all. Last game I remember with soundtracks like this was probably Crysis 2 when Hans Zimmer wrote the intro and some other tracks I think. That intro has to be up there in the top 10 of all time, easily.

I was scared shitless when I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein as a 12 year old. That music and battling ubersoldats gave me nightmares. No game had ever impact on me like that.

Deus ex mankind divided, just like the previous deus ex games has great music as well.

Bethesda made the shooting better in Fallout 4 but completely screwed up the dialogue, skill tree, and made it so companions weren't as effective. Their conference was terrible too.
