RE: Video games
I played this yesterday for a good bit. Got out of the Vault and to the point where I could set up my shelter... Then I just ended up fooling around for a few trying to spruce up my shelter like a gay interior decorator. There is a lot to learn about the crafting system.. I still haven't figured much of it out. I kind of like i so far but theres going to be so much emphasis on gather junk and breaking it down I fear it may take away from the action and adventure.. or maybe it will just add to the feeling of being stuck in a nuclear wasteland. I feel like the crew that comes to my shelter are the cast from The Walking Dead. The dog is ok but a lot of times I will be alerted that he has found something and look around and can't find the furry bastard. (He did help me find my first Fatman though)

The perk system confused me at first, and I ended up wasting a perk and picking a less important perk right off the bat. I thought I could only pick one of the lit up perks from the first row for my first choice and that it went in tiers. So I added one to my intelligence that puts me a 7 intelligence where as in real life I'm more like a 2. So then for my next perk I thought I had to pick one from row two and I did..... Then I realized you can pick any one of the fucking board as long as you have the required SPECIAL points. I'm SPECIAL alright.. but more like the special that rode the short bus to school.

After trying to do the mission after the shelter mission I ran into a herd of ghouls who kicked my lilly ass.... so I tried going another route and ran into a pack of Super mutants who made me their bitch. (I left my power suit and mini gun at the shelter, am I supposed to stay in that thing?)

Overall assessment is that its a Fallout game... which a lot more crafting options. Goodbye social life, its a good thing I can order girls like pizzas on OKC here in the Phils.

I think in this game power armor is supposed to be something you wear for particularly difficult encounters, at least in the first many hours of the game. The way that you enter it (instead of putting it on from your inventory) and that it drains energy from a fusion core - along with the mech-like first person view - makes it feel more like tank than a set of armor. And it's even shown on the map where you leave it.
Cool that you can mod power armor as well.

By the way, I've read that it can supposedly be stolen or picked up for use by settlement NPCs if you leave it with the fusion core still inside. Don't know if that rumor is confirmed, but I took the core with me last time I left it.

RE: Video games
I'm really liking Fallout 4 after five hours of gameplay. Made it all the way to the City, so am just beginning to find my feet a little bit. Bypassed Walden Pond, which is where the IRL philosopher Thoreau wrote his book "Walden" after living in a cabin there for two years (for those who haven't read it, it's very environmentally-based leftist stuff). That's something I really like about the Fallout game settings - the historical landmarks are all still there.

And that opening sequence was what I've been wanting from a Fallout game since I started playing them! no spoilers of course, but those who have played it should know what I mean.

Deaths so far:
2 x Feral Ghoul (there were too many of them and I'd lost so much health to radiation)
2 x Raiders (same reason as above)
1 x Machine Gun Turret
1 x Frag Mine

Welcome to the Commonwealth...

RE: Video games
What difficulty level are you guys playing on?

I'm on normal and so far I've died once to a Death Claw and once to a frag mine.

I'm probably 8 hours or so in now, around two thirds of the way to the city. I keep getting sidetracked on the way, even though I don't deviate all that much from the straight line path towards the city.

I'm surprised by the number and variety of relatively advanced weapons I've found already. Powerful (for my level) sniper rifle, laser pistols, two miniguns and a ton of more level appropriate pistols. Still too short on caps to stock up on the more expensive types of ammo though and pretty much have to get by with what I can find (which is still mostly for the weaker guns).

I'm playing on whatever the default level is (I assume normal) The only two deaths I had are those I mentioned above, being far out numbered. I'm still pretty early on.... damn it... now I want to play it.

What kind of perks are you guys going with? So far other then my wasted two I did one to unlock advanced locks, and one to scrap junk for crafting part. I think I'm level 5

I'm playing on normal too. I'm around level 7, but I put a lot of SPECIAL towards luck (because more bottle caps) and charisma (discounts, better speech options etc). I also found a perception bobble head in the vault IIRC.

I have the level 2 luck perk, and the level 5 or 6 charisma perk "local leader" or something along those lines.

I'm all over the place with my perk choices so far (level 8). Toughness, medic, gunslinger, scrounger, gun nut (for higher weapon mods, will need the science perk later), attack dog, scrapper.

Presumably it's much more difficult to screw up your build in this game than the previous ones. No level cap and the ability to put more points into the base SPECIAL stats.

How is fallout 4? Is it crappy Bethesda streamlining pleb pandering and therefore not a real rpg? Or is it a good contribution to the series that has gotten away from the often archaic game design of the originals?

THE WORLD MUST KNOW!

I've heard: story and characters are meh, gameplay is much better, crafting is fun, world is well built, interface is a mess on pc, and the guns don't appear on your character when holstered.

John MacIntosh doesn't like it too. Too right wing. Definite plus: https://twitter.com/mylittlepwnies3/stat...7648386048

I broke down and picked up Halo 5
I was about to buy the Halo 5 Xbox One bundle with the cool controller, Halo 5, the cool themed Xbox and the most important feature.. the 1tb hard drive. But as soon as the girl started to ring me up some lil hobbit Asian came out the back room and said that that Xbox was reserved.... I cried on the inside

I still think the majority of my time is going to be spent on Fallout 4, but I will indulge in some multiplayer battles on Halo when the homies are on.

RE: Video games
I ended up getting Fallout 4... good experience so far, bordering on great. The bottom line is that it's a very engaging experience. It shows that Bethesda does have a concept for what Fallout should be. From the idealistic portrait of American life in Sanctuary Falls and the conversation with the Vault-Tec sales rep, they've really shown they can capture and express the spirit of Fallout.

A big part of me is upset that it's essentially identical to Fallout 3. Despite the generation gap the graphics don't look even remotely better, and it all feels exactly the same. Even the fucking lockpicking and terminal hacking minigames. Identical. Angry

Kind of frustrating that it feels so dated already. The settlement building has been done in quite a few games. I used to play this ancient Digimon game all the way back on the Playstation 1 as a kid that had the exact mechanic of recruiting new inhabitants. Mount and Blade has the enhancement features. It is an innovation... but it's a "mod-worthy innovation", not "next installment in a storied franchise-worthy innovation". But I think the openness of the environments has been upped, and I like they've left behind the drabness of the browns and greys of Fallout 3. They've beautifully rendered this ruin of America the Beautiful.

But there is no escaping the fact that it is literally Fallout 3 with 'dog companion', 'settlement', and 'storyline overhaul' mods added on. I'm not kidding - there are a few free Mount and Blade mods - literally five or six of them (Sword of Damocles, Vikings Conquest, Brytenwalda, Prophesy of Pendor, and one or two more I'm forgetting) - that are on this scale, made by amateur modding teams. That's why I'm disappointed... yet Fallout 4 is still a solid game. The original engine was alright.

But if you look at this game in terms of the overall context of Bethesda's output - they had Fallout 3, then Skyrim. They're just copying it again for Fallout 4. I mean, how long exactly are they going to keep doing this? That's three AAA titles, each a few years apart, all of them essentially clones of each other. If they didn't feel pressured by the fanbase to do anything different for Fallout 4... then nothing is stopping them from doing the same thing with Fallout 5 and Elder Scrolls 6. It's very worrying for the future of these franchises.

If it aint broke don't fix it. Like COD everyone wanted them to do something different, now its all rocket packs and shit... this is the first year every I didn't buy the new COD game.

That's an exaggeration, unless you're comparing to the PC version of Fallout 3 with assorted graphics mods installed (and that's obviously not reasonable).
Fallout 4 definitely looks dated compared to other recent open world games, but the much improved lighting and some of the graphical effects help cover up some of the blemishes like poor geometry and many ugly textures.
Nothing can cover up the shitty character and animation work though. Even if it's much improved over Fallout 3 it's still an embarrassment that Bethesda can't even do good lip syncing in 2015.

But all those visual problems aside - along with some other wonky stuff - it's still a hugely immersive game that has given me three all nighters from midnight to morning so far. And probably many more to come, since I've barely scratched the surface.
This is one of those times where I'm thankful for my freelance job with very rare deadlines.

RE: Video games
Last night I started playing some Fallout 4 around 9pm... I was just going to play a mission and then head to bed. I didn't finish the one mission until like almost 1am... its only like the third mission on the game. Walking to the objective I got side tracked by two other missions, then when I got to the mission area (Where you kill the bandits in the car plant in Lexington) It was big AF and took me forever to find that big room where the last of the bandits were. I also had so much loot I fast traveled back to my settlement to scrap and sell things... This game is going to be a time sink. But I'm starting to get a feel for it and figure some things out and starting to love it.

What companion are you guys rolling with, I have used the dog and didn't care much for it and the Robot maid. The robot maid says my real fucking name and its pretty awesome... I just dropped him to try the sheriff guy though

Dogmeat was in fo3. And for new vegas, there was a cyberdogmeat, I think the same dogmeat from fallout2?

Hopefully the same team that made new vegas will make the next fallout game, I thought new vegas was quite a bit better than fallout 3, the very first conversation you have in the game was richer than anything you got in fallout 3, or just about any other game for that matter.

Will try fallout 4 at some point, probably when they release the game of the year version next year.

RE: Video games
Yep, the game is absolutely massive. I must be up to 15+ hours now (possibly dangerously close to 20 already, probably two or three sunk into building a bit in Sanctuary) and I'm still only a handful of steps into the main quest and only done a couple of quests for one faction (I think I read there are four or five factions) plus a few side quests.
Reportedly there are 200+ locations on the map - I have maybe 30 or so shown on mine now, and many of those I've just passed by or not fully cleared yet.
I get sidetracked constantly on my way to mission destinations, frequently just with some more or less creative raider battles that are just too tempting to bypass, as I might find some good loot or at least an ammo type I'm low on.

I've been using Piper as a companion for the last couple of hours. Prior to that I just used Dogmeat. She's a bit more useful in combat and less prone to blocking doorways. Hardly stellar AI though.

Assuming Fallout 4 sells well (which is probably not in doubt) it wouldn't surprise me if Bethesda outsources the development of another Fallout game again while they work on the next Elder Scrolls.

I played through some of Obsidian's recent classic style PC exclusive RPG Pillars of Eternity (I've given up on gaming any more on my laptop though, it sporadically shuts down even though temperatures aren't showing excessively high. PS4 only for me at the moment), and dialogue and story was quite captivating.

Continued the main quest for a bit in Fallout 4 and came across the first major "boss battle". Was stuck on it for over an hour before I gave up - I think my character is too low a level (12) to combat this person, or I just need some much better weaponry, so I'm backing out to re-supply and do other quests before returning.

Sitting on the fence about whether I like the new Radio or not - the DJ is just so lacklustre compared to Three Dawg from Fallout 3. He does play some good tunes though, some relating to this forum Wink

RE: Video games
Don't say I never do anything for you guys.

Target got a very small number of the pip boy editions and is selling them off at cost on their ebay store

ps4 edition
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281855438129

xbox one edition
http://www.ebay.com/itm/272043990547

For those that don't know, the pip boy is basically a fancy arm band that holds your iphone, and runs an app on your phone with a picture of the pip boy, and you synch it to your game and as you take radiation or lose limbs, he makes sad faces accordingly. Basically, like having an actual pip boy.

These things are super rare, my gamestop took one preorder on this, and shipped it directly to the guy's house, and they ran out of their allotment of pre orders right away back when it was announced over the summer.

Target took my order this morning, left feedback and shipped it out. I would not suggest ordering more than one of these because they may just cancel your order. Target is going to sell out of these within a couple of hours for sure. I did not think I would ever own one of these things without paying scalpers' prices. But target seems to have actually come through. Go figure.

Merry Christmas!
