We all love aspects of the 80's, no question.

So here is one of the negative aspects of this decade.

It had a way of taking artists and entertainers of the 70's with some individuality and make them all look alike.

Like glammed up, overdressed, indistinguishable corporate entertainment drones. They turned into products of focus groups and go go 80's investors.

The 80's had a way of convincing musicians to trade their individuality for the big bucks.

The earlier versions of the bands looked more human somehow, less airbrushed and smoothed over by the unseen corporate hand. Money is great and all, but the 80's sucked a lot of the life out of the 70's which, in their way, had done the same thing to the 60's.

I was a teen in the 90s, what should I say ?
It felt like the hangover decade to the 80s party.

Then came 1999 and it's end of the world feel, and after that .. well, pretty much nothing.
What happened since 2000 really ?
Anything revolutionary that I missed ?
Because everything feels like a rehash of something I already seen or heard before, just more brickwall compressed and chopped up.

Or maybe I'm just becoming an old fart, could be that too of course ..

Funny thing is, he admitted that the Cowboy Junkies' version was his favorite.

Cowboy Junkies were a cool band. Sort of a prequel to the 1990s in the way they were more subtle and less extroverted.

Back in my music writer days circa 2008, I got to interview them. Margo Timmons was super nice and had a lot to say (none of which I remember, but I have a recording of it somewhere).

Anyway, one of the reasons I liked them is that when they covered the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane," they didn't do the commercial version of it that's on the "Loaded" album. They did the more obscure version from the "1969" live album (below).

Legend has it this mellow version of the song was captured on tape the day the song was written. Lou Reed had presented the band with the song earlier in the day before their gig.

In the pre-Internet era, only hardcore fans knew this. Also, their albums weren't out on CD yet, so you had to search for this stuff in used record stores. I think this shared experience is why the band and I connected.

By the way, Margo, who was once voted one of People mag's Most Beautiful People (or whatever it's called), still looked good a decade ago even though she was well over 40 years old. Classic beauty, IMO.

Nothing happened except 9/11 which changed everything. As a landmark event. Then we are seeing the culture and everything else morph into something crazier and worse over time. Even as technology advanced.

The sheen of the 50's 60's and 80's are wearing off. Perhaps we are getting more insight since the internet into the real nature of the world.

Because you lived through the disco demolition. It erased all knowledge of KC and the Sunshine Band going into the 80's.

Cr33pin, for some reason, was immune to the programming.

I've recently rediscovered John Mellencamp. When I was growing up and I'd hear this on the radio I never gave it any thought because I just wanted to listen to heavy metal or rap. Now that I'm in my 30s it sounds amazing, full of soul.
