Have you watched the movie Watchmen? Nobody seriously understands it. In 1985 I was army reserve and we as a planet were staring down the barrel of nuclear war.

On the upside, I still love the music. Haircuts and clothes. . . .not so much.

On the launch of MTV, my buddy's phone number was one digit off from the customer service number. Hilarity ensued.

I’ve been rediscovering Big County. 1983, and it still sounds fresh.

Very melodic and very Scottish. They used guitar effects to make them sound like bagpipes. And they have a driving rhythm in a lot of their songs that remind me of a Scottish bagpipe brigade marching.






I just made an 80s playlist this week and included this song as well as The End of the Innocence that Uncle Cr33pin posted above.

I also included this song on my playlist, and to this day I remember the first time I heard it the summer of 86.

When Jefferis, now 54, and his lucky friend touched down in Detroit to meet the band, the very first thing he was given was a joint and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

'I took a sip and asked for more,' Jefferis told the New York Post. 'I took a couple hits and a couple more swigs of Jack Daniels.'

The band showered Jefferis in champagne and smashed a cake in his face during their show that night.

Then he got to go backstage, where the real party was just getting started.

Laid out was a buffet of lobster, filet mignon, and cocaine.

'I did a couple lines. Then David [Lee Roth] said, "I think Kurt needs Tammy,"' Jefferis recalled.

That's when a groupie took her clothes off right in front of him and started dancing naked.

'The two of us wound up together in the shower,' he added. 'I blacked out, and the next thing I remember is waking up in a hotel room bed.'

Jefferis had suffered brain trauma years earlier due to a bad fall, and the old injury was quickly catching up to him during the ultimate party weekend.

But the band had no sympathy for his hangover.

Alex Van Halen told Jefferis he needed to shotgun a 16-ounce beer.

'Alex said, "Kurt you are not leaving this spot until you drink it,"' Jefferis recalled

'No way could that happen today,' he added. 'You'd be signing releases out the wazoo - and that would take all the fun out of it.'

Jefferis' unforgettable trip has since been immortalized in Lost Weekend, a new documentary filled with stories of MTV's incredible contests.

'This was the Wild West of the cable era and [MTV executives] were doing anything they could to connect with viewers,' said co-director Bradford Thomason.

'They were flying by the seats of their pants, trying 100 different things to see what stuck.'

Contests included winning an entire town in Texas, shooting a Madonna music video, or winning Jon Bon Jovi's childhood home.

Judy Frappier won the latter, and moved her husband and three children to the Sayreville, New Jersey home.

But she quickly discovered that the residence was a magnet for Bon Jovi fans.

'I would be washing dishes in the kitchen and through the window see a camera flash going off,' she recalled.

The family eventually sold the place and moved to Houston.

MTV's famous VJs also got in on the fun, and one even had sex with the contest winner.
'We kept bonking our heads on mirrors and getting leg cramps. The mile-high club is great in theory but not in practice.'

'I was married, so it was f****d up. But we were out there on the road and having fun.'

I love this movie. It could so easily have been just another 80's "Boner Academy" kind of flick but I think it transcended that, for a couple of reasons:
-the dream-type montages and sequences were nicely executed and fit into the flow of the movie well.
-awesome OST by Tangerine Dream (I'm biased, I love TD)
-there is a slight air of menace at times throughout the movie; apparently the director wanted to end on a much darker note which was canned by the studio in favour of a more audience-friendly ending
-although a comedy, I feel the director was really serious about the quality of what he was doing and took care to make every shot count

Btw the girl in shower isn't RdM; it's some anonymous chick at the beginning. The clip you posted is when he's with her in the train ride at the end (hence the name of the track).

Watching NCAA basketball in the early 1980's was exciting and phenomenal, thanks to UNC and Michael Jordan. The game was pure and fundamental to watch.








I thought "Big Trouble in Little China" was a stupid and funny movie to watch.

During my college years in the 1980's, I started listening to alternative rock/country and folk music to expand my horizon. Cowboy Junkies' The Trinity Session album was the one I enjoyed the most. Their song, "Sweet Jane" came to mind. Edit. "Sweet Jane" song was actually created by Lou Reed. Funny thing is, he admitted that the Cowboy Junkies' version was his favorite.




After that, I started listening to Steve Miller Band...
