Food stamp recipients were selling their benefits online in exchange for money, housing or even art, according to a report federal investigators released Thursday that showed states manage to catch just a fraction of potential fraud in the sprawling program. Use of the food stamps, now officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has skyrocketed under President Obama, reaching 47 million recipients at a cost of $76 billion last year. But states recovered just $74 million in fraudulent payments the previous year, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Obviously you are not dumb, in fact you are well above the average person. I had a similar path as you, minus the military. Unfortunately the average person is not entrepreneur and most people cannot or will not handle money responsibly or correctly. I do agree that a college degree shouldn't be the litmus test on intelligence or success. A normal person needs a boss, a structured job, and (almost) everything figured out for them.

Meanwhile, for all the naysayers who say that this program is unfairly targeting those in rural or extremely poor areas, let’s remind ourselves who this program is really affecting.

These individuals who were benefiting from the food-stamp law and who now can’t are able-bodied, capable adults. These aren’t people with physical or mental disabilities or raising growing children. These are regular Joes who don’t seem to want to get a job.

And while I will say that getting a job can be harder than it sounds, Maine’s program solves that difficulty beautifully. If individuals can’t get and hold a part-time job of twenty hours per week, they can qualify by enrolling in training program. If that doesn’t get them a job, they can still qualify by volunteering.

Do you see what Maine did there? They’re making people exhaust their possibilities for employment before giving them a handout. Finally a state government has hit upon a great way to reward people for trying to get jobs and to punish those who sit around feeding off the taxes of the rest of the country.

Now the struggle remains for the rest of the country to work to adopt similarly effective laws.

I agree with the measure in principle. If you are able bodied and not working and receiving government benefits, volunteering for a few hours a week should be a minor inconvenience.

On the other hand, did you notice how the measure targets those who do not have children living with them in their home (divorced and single fathers).

Out of the thousands removed from the program for failing to meet the new requirements, how many of them do you think were women?

Thats very naive to think the student loans will be paid back, thats why its basically high end welfare for academia. It's also why colleges can raise tuition in perpetuity.

If you combined the number of people who are on food stamps, student loans, or work for the government, you can see why large groups of people want to keep expanding government 'benefits'. It will end badly.

It's not dumb, they're just not driven.

Most people don't care or have the desire to do what we want to do. America used to have jobs that catered to these types of people. Work 9-5 at the same place for twenty to thirty years and then drop out. Raise a family. My home town in the rust belt is filled with these people. They're what used to be peasant stock back before we had 1st world life styles. Dare I say it, most of them still have that peasant mentality even today.

These people just want some meager existence that's comfortable. Make them feel like they contributed to something bigger than themselves and they'll be happy.

Yeah. I think this is where we need some real talk about the bell curve. If our economy is only producing knowledge jobs, a lot of people with IQs under 115 are simply going to be left out of prosperity. Blue collar and trades used to be a path to the middle class for people of average or below intelligence. But then we became addicted to cheap labor and allowing open borders so that the wages of blue collar jobs have been driven down. I mean you basically can't even get a construction or meat-packing job anymore unless you are an illegal immigrant. These jobs used to pay decent wages for working class people. The oil patch jobs are about the last place left for blue collar people to make decent money. Our society is so short-sighted on the immigration issue.
