The problem is based on economics. If these communities had opportunities in the form of jobs and education, we wouldn't have this mess.

The source of the problems is NOT the police.

For a low-income area of the city, the area has had a low homicide rate, for years, in fact, until this murderer rolled into the neighborhood this past weekend, there hadn't been any homicides in the area for the year.

As far as the media goes, Antonio French, a local politician, was arrested for posting pictures and footage on his social media pages.

Again, if things are on the up and up, the authorities don't need to do this.

Where are all your anti-police state, constitutional rights, freedom of the press, etc. advocacy groups?

They don't give a damn unless the issue directly affects them.

That is good they have had a low homicide rate. I never said they did or they didn't. I have no idea if this area is extremely violent or not.

I do know they are reporting it is economically poor. And under Obama and the Democrats in general, the middle class and lower classes have suffered greatly.

These riots, IMO, are not in reaction so much to this incident, as much as just using it as a reason to lash out due to economic strife. The problem is, many of these people so upset are the same ones voting for the Democrats that pay young women to have kids out of wedlock and crush small business opportunities with regulations and a growing govt.

I feel really bad for the people in this situation. It is hard enough making it in the middle class. I know it is tough, but the more we have liberals paying women to have kids out of wedlock and the more we have liberals crushing business, the more this will spread.

As for the incident itself, I refuse to comment on it, because none of us know the facts yet.

The hypocrisy is too much for me... in Ukraine, the US government was supporting the Maidan "protesters," who were throwing molotov cocktails and killing government police in the name of "democracy," but now the police in Ferguson doesn't seem to like the idea of any kind of protest to their questionable killing of an unarmed man, and is even targeting journalists. They are responding with an army battalion's worth of force.

Article in the Washington Post about one of its journalists getting arrested:

Quote:“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” one officer told me. And I responded: “This story’s going to get out there. It’s going to be on the front page of The Washington Post tomorrow.”

And he said, “Yeah, well, you’re going to be in my jail cell tonight.”

The police are getting great practice, because with the Bush and Obama wasteful spending years we are not far from default. When that happens, what is going on in Ferguson will look like Child's play when it comes to police presence.

How many years now have people been predicting this immanent collapse of America and the ensuing Lord of the Flies dystopia? It's getting old. The debt-to-GDP ratio of America isn't even close to the worst in the world. Japan is much worse and the major European countries are worse than us as well. When I see Japan fold, then I'll start to worry.

Japan also doesn't have near the concerns that we have at this point, nor near the levels of disagreement among their citizens.

The debt to GPD is out of control. And there are no solutions coming, because the only real solutions means that 50%+ of our citizens, who have been coddled will have to face reality that they have to work harder and have less to get this country back on the right track. It would mean telling women they can't go around having kids out of wedlock. And anyone who runs on a campaign like that can never win.

We can't borrow money forever, and our European friends can certainly attest to this fact. Add in the border situation, it is only a matter of time before the free handouts are slashed and then we will see a REAL uproar. One I hope to stay far away from.

(08-14-2014 01:08 AM)Zelcorpion Wrote:  All those riots have to be put into perspective

1. Poor people will riot. The reasons are mostly economic coupled with a feeling of being victims, which is often created by the media which often attempts to separate the races (Trayvon Martin case, while being silent about most of the shit happening). Also London riots where mostly white poor looted (again most of them raised by single moms there).

2. It has little to do with race. I know that some of the black community may have a hard time getting out the economic sinkhole there, but it is more created by a vicious cycle of single mothers (partly created by the state as support was dished out only without a man around), drug abuse, bad schools in the regions etc. If you look for example at black immigrants in countries like Germany you see basically second generation blacks who are at least middle class and educated. They are just like white Germans with a darker tan. But they had access to financial help even when both parents were in the house and they had the opportunity to go to good schools and study for free.

3. The police is getting militarized and more of this will be happening. No surprise there - if you've got guys in the force who were killing people left and right in Afghanistan and then you expect them to behave as officers of peace like in the 1950s (sometimes even doing service without a gun!), then you are deluded. Those guys will be getting trigger happy and yes, racial profiling will be done by them - even if the cops are black, they will likely treat a "brotha" differently than a white guy. Again in my opinion it has not much to do with a racial "aggressive" gene, but rather with the fact of social and economic heritage and the mindsets stemming from it.

All of this would not be happening if we had economic prosperity, more stable households (for example giving only married couples financial support instead of single moms), better schools, jobs available for the young, etc. But since the system is deteriorating fast I expect more of that shit to come. We should just not be separated so easily by the spinning of the media.

Don't want to be pedantic but in London it was mostly blacks who rioted, Croydon, Tottenham, Hackney, Lambeth are poor black areas. Same as Birmingham . In Liverpool and Salford though you had more whites rioting, those areas are more poorer than the black areas in London; due to location and political reasons.

On a separate note regarding the whole general situation. I think the biggest outside problem or threat to black communities isn't from conservative whites. but more from the intellectuals who pushed the welfare state and created this victim ideology out of it.

It took economists who were black to come on a public platform and denounce the post civil rights era compensations that caused far more problems for blacks than ever before, even during the Jim Crow era. Economists I am talking about here are Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams *

The whole white privilege argument can be debunked, when you see Koreans and Indians doing so well, often at times in black areas, where they run successful stores. The black people in Europe who do well tend to come from strict African christian families.

Japan is in all sorts of financial woes, but that's really not the point.

Look at what happened in the aftermath of two major natural disasters in Japan and the U.S. Compare the 2011 tsunami in Japan and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. Completely different outcomes. The Japanese universally see ALL Japanese as part of their society. They're all in it together, and they believe in social order. The police and civilians do not regard one another with suspicion. That's the benefit of having a monoculture.

Now look at the post directly above yours by jariel. That woman feels perfectly justified in how she describes blacks. There are plenty like her. Likewise, there are plenty of blacks who see people like her as the enemy. Of course, there are other ethnic groups too thrown into the mix. Then, there's the government that is completely militarised. At one end, there are white guys stacking silver and ammo, preparing for a big showdown. At the other end, there are black urban youths who also feel like they're at breaking point. Everyone, including the government, feels completely justified in everything they do. None of these social tensions exist even remotely in a place like Japan.

Europe is another matter. I see real problems there in the future. Judging who is in the better state between the U.S. and Europe is a bit like picking the winner in a beauty contest held at a feminist conference though.

I personally think that the U.S. is in for more of a long decline, but when there are so many potential flash points, who knows. There's a lot of potential for disorder there.

I think what we're seeing with this situation now is the federal government "not letting a crisis go to waste". They're using these riots as a chance to test out their ability to come in and organize local law enforcement units into paramilitary forces to enforce martial law. They've probably had plans like this in the works for awhile, and especially since the Cliven Bundy situation a few months back, which got out of control and made the Feds look bad. It's much safer for them to do a test run of these type of operations against a bunch of poor, black rioters than to stand up against the heavily armed militias that came out to the Bundy ranch. That being said, this would all likely end if the rioters just went home and stopped fueling this monstrosity. It's not like they're gaining anything, or really even making any type of political statement. They're just playing right into the government's hands. As long as they keep it up, the government will continue having an excuse to escalate its crackdown.

We can expect the lessons the government is currently learning in Ferguson to be applied across the United States down the line, especially if (when) any type of widespread civil unrest emerges as a consequence of some type of economic collapse or black swan event.

I'm sure throwing in a bit of silliness is probably not the thing to do on this thread. But does hearing the name "Ferguson" over and over also remind anyone else of the younger brother on that old Nick show "Clarissa Explains it All?"

Every time I come across reports of cops, riots, racial tension, etc. this is the image that pops up in my mind:

Compared to the riots in the late 1960s, this thing is a joke. The 1960s riots were in almost every major city.

very true.

The only aspect that has changed is that local police departments are now armored, weaponized, and trained to deal with these types of riots in a militarized fashion.

But yeah, the years of 1967 and 1968 were no joke.

I'd be real concerned if they rolled out some of that new technology, like the microwave transmitters that make your skin feel unbearably hot within a certain range, or those low-frequency "brown sound" speakers that make you shit your pants.

But some of the stuff I've seen on TV looks new, like rolling flash-bang grenades with tear gas.

No one can understand St. Louis unless you are from here.

Ferguson is not such a bad place. I grew up playing lots of basketball there, I never lived there, but I've been there a lot, I've been to people's houses there, birthday parties, and driven through there many times.

The problem isn't race relations. The problem is the declining economic situation. Ferguson used to be middle class. It's right next to Jennings, which, is a historically upper middle class black neighborhood. It was turning into a dump, and after the riots, it now officially is.

Someone asked why the protestors don't loot the rich white areas. The reason is because in St. Louis almost every individual, conservative or liberal, has a gun, and the Castle Law is in effect.
