They cover the suicide of Ian Gibbons. After his death, the first call his wife received from Theranos was not to express condolences. They called to demand she return any and all Theranos property immediately.

The chutzpah (hamster?) she's showing by continuing to give speeches and attend events for the scientific elite has not escaped notice by her former professors at Stanford, one of whom was quoted at the end of the piece:

Just finished that Vanity Fair article - wow, I once wondered - briefly - whether to give her a sliver of a benefit of the doubt. Perhaps she let the story get out of control and just didn't stop it in time, got overwhelmed, etc, when the reality is she's as calculating a cunt as can be.

The part about her traveling around with her bodyguards and flying solo in a Gulfstream were all I needed to read. She's a self-absorbed, self-serving twat.

I recently had a conversation with someone who once worked at Walgreens corporate offices. After talking to him, it's no wonder they went for Theranos as they are about as equally fucked up a company, only with an actual business and revenue. The short version of the story is that their upper management was looking for something to build revenue as they are losing out to their main competitor, CVS, in key areas. Theranos sounded like a jackpot to the uninitiated.

Walgreens suffers from nepotism at high levels and some really bad business decisions. In spite of eventually being made aware from within as to how bad Theranos was (Theranos would not disclose any information about the tests to Walgreens either), management still went with it and barely got out without losing a bundle. That explains at least part of the fiasco behind the rise of Theranos. Makes me wonder how many other companies are run by head up the ass execs in jobs they don't know how to do.

SlickyBoy, there's a great Carl Icahn commencement speech (I think at Drexel University) where he talks about this problem. In a nutshell: most CEOs are idiots - they're the fraternity president type who never rock the boat, join a corporation and rise up the ranks. Icahn made a great point about nobody liking their subordinates to be smarter than them, so CEOs pick the obedient subordinate to replace them. Repeat this process a few times and you understand why the average CEO isn't all that intelligent.

I've heard that and another variation - that those who attend top schools like Harvard must work in places with other top grads from similar schools. If they do not, they will ultimately work for some guy who went to Big State U who feels insecure about this new subordinate coming in and potentially rivaling him for promotions or preference. Someone I knew experienced this first hand but never figured out what was going on - he was being marginalized by some pencil pusher afraid for his career. So it's either become an entrepreneur of some kind or join a like minded school of fish.

This wasn't (isn't) the problem at Walgreens though - just a crowd of nincompoops who've been there a while hiring each others relatives by the sounds of it, only now being discovered for the boobs that they are.

The details are coming out, and it's as worse than originally feared. As the former employee pointed out in the video, Uber got more scrutiny over their business, which was just moving people around, versus Theranos, a wannabe medical services company. Everybody invested in the idea, not the execution.

Although Theranos began as a diagnostics firm, its mounting woes and regulatory scrutiny — including multiple lawsuits and an ugly legal battle with former partner Walgreens (WBA, +0.36%) — eventually led the company to shift its focus. In fact, the company has decided to leave the blood testing game altogether, instead focusing on a new device called the "miniLab," which it plans to sell to health care providers.

So Walgreens is suing them - about time they woke up - and Theranos still thinks they have enough credibility to sell any kind of medical device. I'd like to be there when the next lawsuit comes down from a patient alleging some kind of mishap. Any hospital or other health care provider going with this company for anything would be setting themselves up for a massive jury award against them for such moronic judgment.

At this point the Thereanos name and all anything associated with Elizabeth Holmes is so tarnished that anybody in the health care business would be a fool to hire them to take out the trash.

Do I have to ask the most obvious question in the world? Why the he isn't she being charged with fraud? Endangering the health of the public? There's so many federal statutes you could bust her on. She needs to be in jail as an example of female empowerment has limits when you have no talent. Hopefully Sessions will indict her.

Those board fellows are for connections and not much else. But it shows how incredibly well-connected this supposed "Wunderkind" was. Who was she? A Rockefeller grand-daughter like Mark Zuckerberg?

Here you have an even open article on the family connections - they hobnob with billionaires as your neighbors and best buddies. And we don't even get the extended family connections which are probably even more impressive.

I once met a true super-high-IQ STEM woman. She was older, but she was once quite pretty. She worked in the development of the first computers in Silicon Valley. She was a mathematician and semi-conductor engineer. The guys in her company loved her, because she was the only woman - one who was actually interested in the job and who was capable to do it.

That Holmes bitch was supposed to be made into another Sugarmountain or Bill Gates super-genius. Both of those buggers have elite backing up to the bazoo. Trump is 1000 times the self-made man (though he finally inherited a company worth 40 mio. $ in current dollars - at least he multiplied it tremendously.

When I first heard of her she was being referred to as the "female Steve Jobs" a mythical creature that is sighted on a regular basis in Silicon Valley and always turns out to be a bust. I knew immediately, without knowing about the fraud of the company, that she was an imposter.

There has never been a female CEO who was able to build or even successfully run a major high tech company, to my knowledge. Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, Mayer and now Holmes are some of the best known failures. That doesn't stop the Valley from spotting a new one nearly every year. Saddens the valley that, in spite being one of the epicenters of SJW, all the highly successful CEO's that have started and/or run successfully major companies have been either white or, secondarily, Asian males. The first group - white - especially is a problem. The NY Times and other places "report" about Silicon Valley's "white problem" because blacks and Hispanics are under represented. Reality is that whites are under represented too in many companies and around 3-% of the people are Asians who are over represented (mainly because of H1B, the Valley's own indentured servants). Of course, it is not proper to note that Asians are over represented or that there is no rational reason for under academically and technically achieving Hispanics and blacks to be under represented. That is racist.

NY Times, a few years ago, in a rare moment of semi-non PC, looked at why females were not as successful in start ups. They concluded that women do better in bureaucratic organizations, not freewheeling ones like start ups. Of course. That is why women flourish in schools too. Laughably, the Times suggested that start ups become more bureaucratic to help women.

Holmes is the product of a perfect convergence for what high tech wants in an entrepreneur: connected parents in the elite, Stanford university, young, good looking, and connected. She is in the club. Once in the club you are protected. If someone who was not in the club had managed to get funding then pull off the scam she did, things would not have gone so well.

That reminds me of around the time I first heard of her. Take a look to the first few posts on this thread and you'll see even people here were succumbing to adulation and undue praise. I think it was Icarus who first raised the bullshit flag, and well before the press at large even opened their eyes once the scam became obvious.

And anyone who's ever worked in a government office can tell you all about how women love bureaucratic environments.

Holmes may survive in another startup, if only so that Silicon Valley VC types like that douchebag Draper can redeem themselves by seeing her succeed in some other venture. In spite of her connections though, I think Holmes will have a tough time getting anywhere near anything health care related - that train has left the station.
