They will put a label under a brand of wine on the shelf that says, "Wine Advocate/Spectator 90 points!" If you look closely at the tag, however, you will see that the year of the wine rated is different than the vintage of the wine on the shelf. What apparently happens is that when the store sells out of the vintage that was reviewed by the trade publication, they will restock the bottles on the shelf with the newer vintage but leave the tag in place. Several times I've notified store personnel about the discrepancy and their response is always the same- they chuckle and say they will take care of it immediately, but the next time I go back to the store the label is still there. I've heard that this marketing practice is actually illegal.

As always with anything you buy, the general rule should be "Caveat Emptor". Heard about the rich american douches that got fleeced by an indonesian? at least you didnt lose 2 Mill in fake wine .. .

Yea someone started a thread here about that: /thread-31314-...#pid608367

I shared my thoughts on my blog: Thinking Sober – The Case of Rudy Kurniawan

Recently he was pleading for sympathy - http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2014/05...entencing/

My takeaway from this whole fiasco is to know what you want and know what to look for. Don't become all impressed and glassy eyed because of a crowd of ignorant spendthrifts [insert red/blue pill analogy here].

Hello Tengen, what is a good wine under 10$ that tastes pretty decent to girls? I want to stock up on something when I pull back to my place.

lol. It depends on the girl. You should stock a few wines, such as a basic Chardonnay and Merlot, and then ask what they like to drink. Personally, I do not like either one, but they are quite mainstream and women will be familiar with them. You could then expand your wine list and also stock a sweet white (such as a Riesling or Gewurztraminer) and a sweet red, such as a dessert wine.

If you want to get them drunk, stock both a tawny port and a ruby port. Port has about fifty percent more alcohol than wine. Most women will not even realize that it is not wine, unless you tell them. Port is generally more expensive than wine, but you can get entry level bottles of decent quality for about $10.

I've actually submitted an article on wine selection with women in mind to ROK, just waiting on Roosh to approve and schedule it. Keep an eye out.

Your thinking reflects mine, TailGunner. Girls new to wine will be scared off by dry and tannic wines, so definitely keep that in mind. I'll elaborate on that in the article on ROK later.

Can't say I've tried any Mexican wine at all, but would be interesting. I'd imagine it would be juicy and high in alcohol due to a warm-hot climate. The most famous examples of Nebbiolo are Barolo and Barbaresco, which would have a relatively cooler climate.

If you wanna appear more sophisticated pickup Chilean Pinot noir, Cono Sur makes a very drinkable cheap and Cheerful one. I can buy one out there for around 10.
You could try also lesser known Italian wines. There is a killer winery making a wine called ERA making bottlings of organic merlot and montepulciano (Sangiovese) for less than 10. Decant it (pour it out in another container) let it sit for half an hour and tell her it's a fancy wine. I couldn't tell them apart, it's extremely well made and less hangover.

For whites my go to is Dr Loosen Riesling from Germany. Delicious and sexy. Easy to drink, very food friendly.
Again, take a chance with Italian wines. Even the cheap ones from unknown regions have something to prove, so chances are you will find something decent for not a lot.
Worse come to worse, and you must have a chard, Kendall Jackson makes decent enough Chardonnay. I'd drink it.

Or, if budget is a concern, Charles schwab 'red'. Drinkable but regretful.

Tawny is awesome. Even on the rocks it stays tasty. White ports are great in the Summer in a spritzer, very likeable.

Madeira is the lesser known cousin, you can get a 10 year old for less than 20. That sounds weird, doesn't it? Hello NSA!

Actually it's quite dry, not all that boozy at all, even if it clocks at 14%... Mid body at most. Nose is shy, dirty and a little cooked, but it's what it is. Think dried raspberries and dusty leather.

Most of it is made and imported by la cetto, from Guadalupe valley, south of TJ. It's faintly like what you would expect , but the price is right and goes well with Mexican food, esp mole.

Yes, LA Cetto is one of the biggest wineries from Baja, they make a good and cheap Nebbiolo:
http://www.cettowines.com/

There's also Valle de Parras, where the oldest winery in the Americas is located, Casa Madero established in 1597, they make a really good Syrah:

Mexican wine is growing like crazy, with a lot of boutique wineries, unfortunately we do not export that much wine but I think that the results are getting better each year.
Please try a bottle whenever you can with some tacos.

Only problem with Mexican wine is the same as Canadian in some ways: the cheap stuff is pretty mediocre and forgettable and the higher end is anyone's guess what's the quality like.
Though in Canada I know I'm getting something very drinkable, if not at par with Bordeaux or burg (some case even better QPR). For Mexican wine so far I've been burned more than a few times with mediocre wine for mucho dinero. So I'll wait a few more years and see.

I got my Austrian buddy to correct me, but even then he said that there are regional dialect variations, so don't sweat it too much...

Can anyone here post up links to some wine bars in the USA that have their beverage lists online? I'm planning another article from ROK, and while I'm based in AUS I think most of the readers will be in the states. Preferably they would offer everything from cocktails, spirits, beers and of course wines by the glass and bottle.

Thanks in advance.

RE: The RVF Wine Thread
I have a girl I'm swooping that I need wine advice on.

I really like darker bitter flavors. Dark chocolate....whiskey...red wine...etc.

This girl is a typical 20-year-old who knows NOTHING about wine/food/culture but says "oh yea I love white wine but HATE red" (you guys know shes gotta love some red). I asked her what kinds and she had no idea what to answer with.

What kind of whites should I have stocked at my house for when she flies in again?

My initial thought is....it doesn't matter...her palate is so immature...but I really don't like white wine that much. It's too sweet for my palate. Any hints?

RE: The RVF Wine Thread
Hey redbeard, I wrote an article on ROK specifically about choosing wines for girls - http://www.returnofkings.com/34766/a-bas...-for-women

The gist of it is to find something with residual sugar to make it more palatable. Look for terms like "off-dry" and "late-harvest" which should suggest the fruit was riper before vinification.

Also, lots of cheap sparkling wine on the market. Grab a few bottles of cava or prosecco and lie them down, put them in the fridge the night before you expect a girl in your crib.

I've submitted another ROK article about having wine on dates, just waiting for it to be approved and scheduled. Keep an eye out, there'll be some usefull tips in there too.

Yes, I think this should be a good topic to continue.

I don't drink whites either and usually serve red to girls anyway. I've gotten good feedback on West Coast and Australian Shiraz which to me have a rich taste but are still sweet and not bitter. It's usually after a couple of drinks or several though so don't know if they really like it or just placating.

RE: The RVF Wine Thread
I love red wine; it's almost the only alcohol I drink these days.

While I normally stay away from sweet reds (I like a nice merlot or malbec with my steak, for example) my absolute favorite red of all time happens to be a sweet one from north Georgia called Tail Gate Red:

I discovered it while vacationing in the mountains there a few years ago. It's quite sweet at first, but satisfyingly complex in how it gives way to this deep, rich, earthy aftertaste. I like to stick it in the fridge and bring it out for tailgates (obviously), BBQs, pool parties, etc. A perfect drink for a hot summer day (and it also doesn't hurt that it's only $14.95/bottle).

RE: The RVF Wine Thread
Here are my all-time favorites. They're not very well-known gems. That's the kind of wine I normally only have close friends discover.

- Burgundy/Cote de Beaune: Volnay ; any Premier Cru, but in particular the "Les Caillerets" domain. This is my absolute all-time go-to red for any occasion. Ironically it's called a feminine wine, as it hammers you less than most. No aftertaste, great presentation and smell, very fruity. Anybody who tried it and didn't know it was blown away. It's not even expensive (the very very best years are like $50 a bottle if you source it locall,y if you import it in the US then probably double that, sadly). It comes from a region that has been cultivated without interruption for 2,000 years. It was a personal favorite of king Louis the XV. Either get a recent year and drink it right away, or get a wine that's 7-8 years old, or get one and wait that many years. Otherwise the wine will close down and will not be great to drink for a few years until it reopens again. I've had that wine as a starter drink as well and it goes down really well with everything. They were a little decimated by hail the last couple of years so there will be less bottles, but it's still very easy to source.

- Burgundy/Givry: Le Petit Marolle - Francois Lumpp Domain. This is from a sub-region of Burgundy that's typically viewed as not as prestigious as the big areas (cotes des nuits, cotes de beaune). In spite of that, it will absolutely blow your mind. It is heavier than the Volnay so probably something you want to serve with meat. This is a guy that makes something like 200 bottles a year, so it may be hard to find or require a preorder.

- South France: Chateau La Liquiere. In particular the Cistus wine. This is also from an area that's not known for producing prestige wines, and it's even in an area of that area that's even less prestigious. And yet, this is another affordable, amazing wine that goes with everything. Very inexpensive. Note that the domain has other wines than Cistus but I didn't find them to my taste.

- South France: Mas de Daumas Gassac. These guys make wine without modern equipment or chemistry - the place used to have monks producing wine in the middle ages. They have limited yield as a result, but their production is fantastic. They blend several types of grapes together so I was dubious about the outcome. Very fruity as well, a bit raspy to the taste, a little strong, still goes with pretty much everything.

- Beaujolais: Cote de Brouilly. A wine that comes on strong, best served with meat and cheese. Interestingly, this type of grape used to be cultivated in my all-time favorite place (Volnay) since the days of Roman occupation, and produced terrible wine, until Louis XV had it transplanted to the Beaujolais area where it thrived.

If you can source those wines I hope you have a really great time drinking them with your friends and lays.
