Just a heads up. More for the guys who have never been.

So, I have noticed some things, some features of Filipino daily life that I thought worth investigating.

There's always singing, for instance. Everybody seems to sing -- an affinity passed on to my daughter. Family -- and church, of course, loom large (even in my otherwise atheistic household). And food.

My daughter is no stranger to sisig and sinigang and adobo and holds me in disregard for being unable to procure her the delicious Filipino pastries and breads she finds at her other family's home.

She knows a few phrases in Tagalog and looks at me pityingly when I don't know what she's talking about.

Nothing goes to waste around here. Anything, no matter how small, that could be of use to anyone who might need it back home, gets packed in a big box and sent to the other side of the world -- if not to family members, to someone in need.

I thought this was pretty good. He covered less well publicized aspects of the Philippines to a foreign audience:

The OFWS, the christmas culture, jollibees (lol), the wonders of lechon, and cover bands. He captured the street level ghettoness of manila pretty well. Can't imagine how many upper class Filipinos were actively lobbying and blowing smoke up his ass for him NOT to do this type of depiction.

It wasn't just beach destinations, middle/upper class haute cuisine dining, and night clubs which would have been the safe and easy route.

Most Koreans in Philippines aren't there because they are less well off either.

They usually have one or more relatives involved in business there either on the individual level or big time MNC level.

They really aren't too much different from the Koreans in HCMC who all pack into district 7 and are involved in some pretty legit and mind boggling profitable ventures or as fairly decently paid salarymen for K companies.

There's way more K tourists in the Philippines though but it's mostly packs of guys to begin with.

One of the Canadian Hostages kidnapped from Samal Island in September 2015 has been confirmed killed. His head was left in a bag near a town on Jolo Island, between Mindanao and Borneo.

All the ransom demands had been ignored, as the Philippine government asks foreign governments not to pay, since it would make kidnappings more common. If they were getting paid, they would do it more, so I think the policy is a good one, but it does cost lives, as in this very sad case.

18 Filipino soldiers were recently killed fighting the Abu Sayyaf, but it was mostly ignored in the western press. They might have been trying to find the kidnappers and victims. It is terrible what happened to the Canadian, or any other kidnapping victims that were killed, but many more Filipino soldiers were killed fighting the kidnappers and their leaders.

The victim was very wealthy, and famous, so he was obviously targeted. The lesson from this tragic story is to be smart in poorer countries and DON'T FLAUNT YOUR WEALTH!

How many tourists have been kidnapped or killed in Mindanao in the last 10 years? I am pretty sure it is much more likely to die in a car accident in Manila than to get killed or kidnapped by islamic extremists in Davao or other parts of Eastern Mindanao.

says that there are around 7000 foreigners in Mindanao (rough figure from the table).

So every month, the average foreigner has a 1:7000 chance of being kidnapped. Which is about 0.2% chance per year. OK so it is not especially dangerous, but it is not exactly safe either.

Davao reminds me of Chiang Mai. Very laid back. Night life is actually quite good because you have a university crowd. I was drinking w some local cats I've met on a previous trip a few hours past 1am but at some seedy joint.

The streets are way cleaner than Manila. Don't really see shanty towns or garbage litter everywhere. Cigarette buts aren't everywhere. It actually makes talking to girls easier if u spark because the smoking area is usually away from the bar (away from friends) and somewhat hidden

Paul Smith in Greenbelt 5 would be your best bet. You can get them tailored downstairs at the Peninsula Hotel.

Failing that, try Shangri La Mall in Ortigas. They have a number of high end designer places all at sky high rip off prices

Lastly, in the basement at the Podium Shopping Mall, again in Ortigas is the Kingsmen Tailor, these will also most definitely have what you are looking for, albeit at a hugely inflated price

Yeah I heard about that smoking ban in Davao City. So there are still designated smoking areas in Davao? I thought all outdoors was banned. I saw a news report where Duterte made a foreigner eat cigarette butts when he was caught smoking.

@ poker- about a week.

Davao I smoked almost nonstop outside w some local moneyed Filipinos. No smoking indoors. And you don't want to smoke out on the major streets but next to the bars it's okay if you aren't directly visible from the street.

Just be discreet

Edit- bar was streets not sheets. Just opened up about 2 months ago. Younger college crowd.

Some more spots we went- alacatraz, brewery, business class.

I actually like the smoking ban because it's easier to talk to girls at the outdoor smoking area.

I would say that almost all the youth and ppl drinking smoke socially.

What worked well was to scope the girls you like and wait until they get away from their group (social pressure) to smoke/bathroom and talk to them.

It's damm near impossible to talk to them around their friends but v easy if they are split off.
