I stayed at Parklane which is right next to there. It's a solid location because the mall is huge and has plenty of stuff there. I did the "hotwire mystery deal" thing and got parklane for $50 per night. It had great room service for only about $6 per meal. Check out one of those sites like betterbidding and you can usually narrow down which hotel you'll get on hotwire.

Really, I'm all for anything that gives you a better experience. I've corresponded with members over PM and given whatever knowledge I have to share in order for them to get a better picture of what their options are in the Phils. I make an effort not to interject my own values and preferences, and I try to qualify my statements where my experience is limited.

I'm trying to keep an open mind, but your posts rub me the wrong way. The vast majority of the content is related to talking about how much you spend on alcohol, not about what you're actually achieving. You're speaking as if you're a world expert on the inner circle of Filipino society a few hours after landing. It's naive to take the word of people you meet in bars as gospel. From what I've read, the only thing you've ascribed value to is money and alcohol.

It's not a message I agree with. I think it gives a disingenuous impression of what the Philippines has to offer for the majority of guys that will go there. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars a day or kill a top shelf bottle to have fun. I can understand if you're trying to shoot for the upper tiers and business contacts, but I don't think that's the way to go about it.

If you're trying to build business contacts at the highest levels, I'm surprised you haven't ended up in places like New Manila, White Plains, and other areas where the Chinese Filipinos tend to live. They run the show in the business world, and they don't always advertise it. If they're not comfortable with you in their home, you're not yet a companero.

Not trying to tear you down, but it sounds like you're calling touchdown at the 10 yard line. A little humility might give you some perspective.

Has anyone managed to get PayPal working with a Filipino bank account?

When I was there before, it was an almost impossible task to even get a bank to open an account for me on a tourist visa but eventually I managed to get a Metrobank account. It was not compatible with PayPal though so fairly useless for me and I withdrew all my cash so they have probably deactivated it now anyway for going under the maintaining balance. There are a few articles on it online but they seem to be largely false and not based off first hand experience.

DVY, you may have a few haters but I actually like your posts. They ate not so dry as most other posts. They may not be the most informative but it shows what YOU are getting in the phillipines. Which is a bit different from what others are getting. So I value your perspective, even though we have different tastes.

Yea exactly. For the most part, person to person corruption is actually minimal at the high-end. You will meet a lot of BS-ers and gold diggers.

Less likely to be scammed at a reputable joint than a tourist joint. Normal ppl for the most part are honest (sans taxi drivers and proffesional scumbags). Thats true anywhere.

Sure there is a ton of readily available gash but seriously i will never spend more than one day in Manila due to the air quality.
I can easily equate it with being trapped inside an ashtray within the holland tunnel.

As someone who has made friends with numerous upper middle class i can tell yoh the wealthy here like to be discreet and not act like their rich. The wannabes will come in, with their monthly salary saved up and try and pretend they have money. For the record the senior managers in mid level corporations make under six figs usd. All the money is with small business owners. If you meet someone working a corporate job chances is they are a 15k millionaire.

No one brags how much they make for the obvious reason they don't want scammers and potential kidnapping scenarios. So I have no clue where you're getting the 5M pesos figure. It's all very discreet. The notable exception being those with criminal elements intact.

The high end scene here is in my option a closed shop to foreigner in the majority of instances and I struggle to see the sense in guys coming over thinking they will infiltrate the scene!

My advice is stay under the radar, be respectable and enjoy yourself and always be familiar with your surroundings. Plenty of good advice has been posted on this forum regarding Manila.

I have met DVY a couple of times. He is a solid, fun and ambitious guy with a good vibe. He is pretty smart and knows how to operate among people. Not that he needs any support from me. But I'd hate for people to get the wrong impression. Very likable person.

I don't have those kind of issues. When I go out in the Phil I bring my trusted associate with me who handles any payments, and I use Spanish doubloon's of course.

That's cool we all make some mistakes at some point. I think the big red flag for a lot of us reading this stuff is also the cultural aspect too.

With that being said unabashed flaunting of money and outright arrogance is something Filipinos don't like very much. They tolerate it to some extent from their own elite classes mainly because there's nothing they can do about it but most really don't like it at all and view it with contempt or envy. This sort of thing is frowned upon much more than in the west because of huge class differences. There are literally people eating out of garbage dumps in Manila and dirty looking toddlers running around in the street in some places.

When a foreigner does it it's just much worse because you're not really part of their society. You have no chance of replicating what the elite classes do because you're simply not even close to that level. To them it appears as if you're an outsider trying to openly say you're better than them and taking a big shit on their social etiquette. It brings back all sorts of ugly social implications and historical complexes people can have in asia. That is the exact message they will read into your actions when you do things like that.

In fact it's not just Filipinos who think this way most southeast asians and some northeast asians will feel this way too.

If you're really looking to network and have actual business connections to offer then you should also start at home. L.A. is home to a lot of filipinos and there are several affluent well connected families there too who do business in the Philippines or have an extensive network of relatives. Just look around the San Gabriel Valley, Torrance, etc.. If you're in SF then hit up Daly City. Find fil-ams with a Chinese surname and go from there. There are a ton I grew up around and met later in life too. I know a lot of fil-ams who live "bi coastal" type lives transitting to and from L.A. and Hawaii to Manila all the time.

In Manila if you're really wanting to get in on business contacts then look for alumni who graduated from places like Chiang Kai Shek college.

The vast majority of actual moneyed filipinos you meet in clubs and such may be from fairly well off families but the reality is a lot live off family money. Many don't do shit. If you want to find actual do'ers in Filipino society then you won't be finding them in some nightclub.

Like I said before a lot of foreigners think they are hot shit when they rub elbows with law enforcement, politicians, the moneyed class, or "media" figures in southeast asia.

None of it means shit.

Talk is ultra cheap in SE Asia. It's really all based on what you can do and most importantly what they will do for you when you need it. In most cases these local "friends" will disappear like you wouldn't believe when it comes time to make good on actual favors or deals if they don't have a significant stake or incentive in doing this for you.

Talking with DVY over PM, he's revealed some details that give a completely different context to his experience. I think at least some of the confusion is applying what's valued in the LA scene and thinking the same values are reflected in Filipino society. I suspect some normalcy bias is at play and it's causing him to attribute his success to the wrong thing. At least, that's what I got from the posts. I won't go into further detail in case he wants them to remain private.

The reason I've been skeptical is because without those details, anyone reading his posts will think that he's claiming his connections are due to throwing money around and drinking expensive alcohol. Because that doesn't jive with our experience, naturally a lot of people are going to have their doubts.

No reasonably priced hotels available in fort (last minute booking).
Don't make this mistake.

Traffic seriously took 2-3 hrs from fort BGC to ortigas (about 5 miles). It would have been faster to jog or bicycle. The worst part isn't even that everywhere you go is a parking lot. The worst is that its a parking lot w/running fumes. Everybody is just sitting in their cars tired as crap, irritable, and the fumes are just running out of the cars.

No wonder Phils has such bad pollution in Manila. Cars are basically on the road 24-7. Think about how much productivity is lost in Phils because of traffic. You are working a 8 hr day and driving an extra 2 hrs each way. Nuts.

No girl was willing to come out where I was. FML.

I am going to go full donkey kong mode on all of them when I get back to Fort. Probably line up a few in a row.

Traffic is 1-2 hours anywhere in the city- Probably closer 3 hrs to slightly beyond Makati from Ortigas BGC is the exception because there is almost no traffic going to BGC. That might have a reason to do w/why girls will meet you there so easily. Free meal, nice sheets, western D.

Manila guys are also mad bullshitters (like you guys said). I did meet 2 really rich dudes from rich families. This is out of thousands of people. Maybe I can do something w/them BUT once again its no guarantee. The culture here is just totally unproductive. If you live here, I highly recommend associating only w/Chinese Filipinos or westerners. Its just a total shitshow otherwise. Even the Chinese Fils are too engrained in dealing w/all this petty shit that occurs here on a daily basis.

Traffic, scams, ignorant peasant workers, smiles because of fear (workers don't want to lose their jobs) but wont help you. Its a truly mindblowing society.

I took a trip out to Tagaytay and it made me realize just how poor Phillipines is. Most people are living at near poverty level. My driver was saying if you are poor and get sick, you die in the Phillipines. It really is a fight to survive. He said that a lot of the older wealthy Phils guy hunt for students around the end of the semester when next semester's tuition is due. They pick up girls in exchange for paying tuition (anywhere from P1000 to P5k). Girls selling themselves for 20-100 dollars. Many keep these girls on for a while. Some girls finish school. Others lured by easy money go straight for the go-gos, karaoke or become P4P.

Just an intractable cycle of corruption and poverty. The roads outside of metro Manila are just a mess. Some of the hard labor workers there (spoke w/them w driver translating) working for 200 P/day. Barely 4 dollars/day.

Most of the girls I have are from Makati. EDSA would have been nuts during rush hour. Everybody said oh, its too far.
