I'll play devil's advocate on this one. But let's take all the negatives of modern marriage out of it with the understanding that no man should ever marry a modern (feminist) woman.

On the strictly philosophical/spiritual level which marriage exists, and on which any other level it cannot exist, marriage is simply an acceptance by a man that his desire for sexual conquest will never be fulfilled. So your option is to put your energy into something that will never be sated or to learn to settle that portion of your spirituality so it can be freed to pursue other elements of living.

Marriage is essentially a spiritual agreement with yourself that there are more important things in life than fresh pussy, based on nothing other than the practice, advice and tradition of the ancients. Are there elements of fear, inadequacy and self-hatred involved in conceding to marriage? Sure. But what truly spiritual quests aren't based on such insecurities?

I suspect fear is a part of it. Fear of growing old alone and winding up adrift in the system with no one who has your back. Doctors, lawyers, bankers, nurses anyone who might have to make serious decisions about your life at a point when you are, to them, just another old fuck who is hard of hearing and smells bad. Having children or a wife to advocate for you can help a great deal. Is it worth the sacrifice in your prime? Hard to say, obviously.

There's also tradition. They were raised in a family, they still want a family but their parents are going to die and the only way to keep having more family is to have children or get married. Now of course you can have children without being married but there's a lot of social pressure not to do that. Granted, there's also a lot of social pressure not to marry hookers.

I suspect for a lot of men, their sexual utopia is a faithful wife or two to give him a family; while still having unlimited access to fun young mistresses on the side until his equipment stops working.
