@thedude, not to derail but I'll confess that I love these phrases and feel that they showcase the triumphant glory of the English language.

The ability of a culture and a language to keep effortlessly spawning these stock phrases -- which strike the ear with the feeling of inevitability, whether you like them or not -- is a measure of its strength and vitality, and today's internet culture has both in spades. These great American energies may be misdirected right now, but as with a lot of things it's far better to see misdirected energy than exhaustion and lassitude. That's also one of the reasons why I don't buy the "American decline" narratives.
